Growing up in culture of gambling: Explaining adolescent students' academic performance using the Theory of Planned Behavior
Burgos, Jaclyn Gay S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)
Integrating lcek Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, this study seeks to explain the factors that influence the academic performance of adolescent students. In assessing the academic performance: questionnaires for attitudes towards behavior, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention were administered to adolescent students (n=88) in rural areas of Iloilo. A Pearson-product moment correlation was used to examine the correlation between the factors and academic performance. There were five participants who joined the focused group discussion and their answers provided an indepth connection of the variables. Results of the quantitative analysis stated that attitude towards behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control are individually correlated with intention but only attitude towards behavior is significantly correlated with academic performance. The results from this study can be used in schools and related government agencies in shaping students to have a more positive outlook with regards to academic performance.

Brasileño, Hazel Alice P. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1987-03)
This study was conducted to find out the level of television exposure of high school students, to know their study habits, and to find out the relationship between TV exposure and the study habits of UPV high school students. A study was conducted among VP Visayas High School students, where a total of 137 respondents from first, second, third, and fourth year levels provided the major data of the study. A three-page questionnaire was the instrument used in gathering data. It included: respondent’s level of exposure to TV and the student’s study habits. The least part related TV exposure with study habits. Findings revealed that there is 99% television viewer- ship which means that there is a high level of TV exposure among respondents. Number of hours of viewing ranges from 30 minutes to a maximum of six hours. Most of the programs watched were foreign canned shows and were entertainment in nature. Preferred viewing schedule of most students is 7-9 p.m. Findings also showed that most (54%) of the parents imposed restrictions on their children’s viewing, particularly on the number of hours students watched TV. On the other hand, ninety-six percent (96%) of the students studied their lessons. For those who studied majority do 30 everyday for a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of three hours. Students preferred to study between 8-10 p.m. Students study mainly to attain high grades. In relating TV exposure and study habits results showed that TV viewing consumes most of the free time of students and that time slotted for study is utilized for viewing the medium. However, TV viewing is also helpful to the students in that it gives them information and ideas which they applied to their lessons. The chi-square test for independence was used to find out if there is a relationship between the two variables TV exposure and study habits. Results showed that there is a relationship between TV exposure and study habits, that is, the more exposed the students are to TV, the greater is the probability that the number of time spent for studying will be lessened.

Love teams vs. love teens: How the scripted relationships affect the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on REALationships
Bolaño, April F.; Calubiran, Petty Dane C.; Dolor, Joanne Amor D. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-04)
Aside from being the second most avid television consumers, Filipinos especially teenagers, have become increasingly immersed to watching romantic-themed teleseryes by the different emerging love teams such as JaDine and KathNiel. The evident fandom to these love teams lead to the conduct of the study to identify the effects of the scripted portrayal of a romantic love and relationship to the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on romantic love. Research design using qualitative and quantitative approach was utilized. George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory was used to answer how exposure affects the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on romantic love. The survey was conducted among 90 qualified respondents across (3) three public high schools in Miag-ao, Iloilo. The 5—point Likert scale was used to measure the influence of the two love teams' teleseyes in the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers. Results show that high exposure on teleseryes affect teenagers' perceptions and attitudes on romantic love as portrayed by the love teams. However, it was also noted as per results, that not all that were shown in the teleseryes are being mirrored by teenagers as real since they also critic if those depictions of romantic love really happen in reality.

Benitez, Ninotchka Vyent B.; Fuentes, Elyssa Marie C.; Jurilla, Raphaela Joy C.; Manderico, Rommel Vincent D.; Mateo, Mary Diadem O.; Raymundo, Nicollete Joy D.; Siojo, Chloe Naty Marie Eugenie A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)
Refractive error is the number one cause of childhood blindness in the Philippines with a prevalence rate of 53% (3rd National Blindness Survey, 2004). Color blindness is an abnormal condition characterized by the inability to clearly distinguish different colors of the spectrum. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to assess the visual acuity using the Snellen Chart and prevalence of color blindness using the Ishihara pseudochromatic plates, among private and public elementary school pupils in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. A total of 324 elementary pupils were included, 113 of them belonged to private school and 214 belonging to public school. The prevalence for both error of refraction (83/63) and color blindness (52/60) is significantly higher in private school than in public school. Age is a factor in developing both disorders. There is a direct correlation between higher income, and error of refraction and color blindness. Several factors could attribute to the results, including diagnostic procedures and lifestyle of the pupils. This study should help raise awareness regarding error of refraction and color blindness to the public, most especially to the parents who tend to neglect the visual performance of their children.

Atienza, Quintin G., II; Elisterio, Diogel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03-13)
The math anxiety and math test performance of 192 secondary school students from Palaca-Damilisan National High School were assessed using a math anxiety questionnaire and a math test. This was done to find out the effects of math anxiety on high school students’ math test performance. Sex and year level differences on math anxiety and math test performance were also investigated using the analysis of variance. Findings reveal that math anxiety affects math test performance negatively. No statistically significant sex differences were found in both math anxiety and math test performance. No statistically significant year level differences were found in math anxiety. Year-level differences were found to be statistically significant in math test performance. Year level math test performance means showed a decreasing pattern from first year to third year but the means went up in the third year. Tukeys HSD showed that significant differences were coming from the differences in the means of the first and second year levels and the first and third year levels.

Abello, Merwin M.; Jison, Anne Therese G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)
Depression affects all kinds of people: young to old, rich to poor, famous to unknown. On students depression has been linked to poor school performance, absenteeism, alcohol and drug abuse, running away, and feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. The study aims to find out the students’ personal experiences on depression and the coping strategies they employ for their depressed mood. It seeks to accomplish the following objectives: (1) To know the causes of depression as reported by male and female students; (2) To find out the effects of depression on male and female students; (3) To determine whether male and female students experience depression in different ways; and (4) To ascertain whether male and female college students who experienced depression differ in their coping strategies. The respondents of the study are students of the Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. The survey method was used in gathering data. The respondents were selected using simple random sampling method. From the total population of the Division of Social Sciences, a sample size of sixty-two (62) was drawn using the fish bowl method. Then a self-administered questionnaire was distributed among them. The study shows that the common causes of depression among students axe greater academic demands, problems in the family and intimate relationship. Among male and female students, depression usually interferes with their academic and social functioning. The study also shows that male and female respondents have similar depression experiences. In coping with their depression, the respondents consider the problem-focused coping strategy. Majority of the respondents come up with strategies and activities that can help them in their depression. Both sexes in the study rely on the social support; but it was found out that females seek more social support than males do. The researchers recommend conducting the study using bigger sample as well as using a certain scale that would determine or measure the level of depression and the coping strategies of the respondents.
