This study sought to know the sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, social- psychological, and cultural adjustment of Korean visitors in Iloilo City, who were currently enrolled in Moohan Tutorial Services, Inc. The results showed that Koreans in Iloilo City are generally single with ages ranging from 20 to 30 years old and are dependent on the allowances they receive from their parents or guardians monthly. The study also showed that Koreans in Iloilo City are relatively well adjusted in their life in the Philippines, which is manifested in their improved social interaction with the locals of Iloilo City. At the same time, they are generally well off as reflected on their spending patterns as compared to the Filipinos’ standard of living. They relatively spend more than an average Filipino would spend for food, transportation, clothing and many others for a certain period of time.

Growing up in culture of gambling: Explaining adolescent students' academic performance using the Theory of Planned Behavior
Burgos, Jaclyn Gay S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)
Integrating lcek Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, this study seeks to explain the factors that influence the academic performance of adolescent students. In assessing the academic performance: questionnaires for attitudes towards behavior, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention were administered to adolescent students (n=88) in rural areas of Iloilo. A Pearson-product moment correlation was used to examine the correlation between the factors and academic performance. There were five participants who joined the focused group discussion and their answers provided an indepth connection of the variables. Results of the quantitative analysis stated that attitude towards behavior, subjective norm, and perceived behavioral control are individually correlated with intention but only attitude towards behavior is significantly correlated with academic performance. The results from this study can be used in schools and related government agencies in shaping students to have a more positive outlook with regards to academic performance.

Pattern of internet usage among social science students of University of the Philippines in the Visayas, Miagao, Iloilo
Botengan, Henry James P.; Singo, Lynnie V. (2006-10)
The study was undertaken to know the pattern of Internet usage among Social Science students of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV). It generally aims to identify (1) the socio-demographic profile of Internet Users among Social Science students of UPV; (2) determine the reasons why the students use the internet, (3) find out the pattern of internet usage of the social science students; (4) know if there is a relationship between patterns of internet use and socio-economic characteristics of students such as sex and social class. The researchers used simple random sampling without replacement and employed the fishbowl sampling technique in selecting the names of the respondents. The data was gathered using the interview schedule and analyzed using simple frequency counts and percentages. The researchers also employed the chi square test for independence as a statistical tool in testing the hypotheses. This study shows that the main reason for students in accessing the Internet is for research purposes with e-mail at a close second. The least used Internet service availed is for purchasing goods and services. On the relationship of sex and Internet use, frequency of Internet use is dependent on the sex of respondent. Male respondents tend to access the Internet more often than female respondents while there is no significant difference in the average number of hours spent by male and female respondents in accessing the internet. Also, there is no relationship between sex and amount spent in accessing the net. Male and female respondents’ expenses for weekly Internet use do not differ significantly. On the relationship of social class and Internet usage, there is no relationship in social class and in the number of times of accessing the net per week. Even though respondents belong to different social classes, their frequency of internet use do not differ significantly. On the other hand, average hours spent in accessing the net is dependent on social class. On the average, respondents from the lower and middle class access the internet for 2 hours or less only, while those who belong to the upper class tend to access the net for 3 hours or more. Weekly amount spent for accessing the internet is dependent on social class. Upper class respondents tend to spend more than Php 60 per week for Internet usage, while lower and middle class respondents spent Php60 and below weekly for Internet usage. Another study could be done on a different group (Young Professionals) with a larger sample size. Other factors affecting Internet Usage should also be considered in doing another study, such as a roommate having an Internet connection where the person does not necessarily pay for Internet usage.

Love teams vs. love teens: How the scripted relationships affect the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on REALationships
Bolaño, April F.; Calubiran, Petty Dane C.; Dolor, Joanne Amor D. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-04)
Aside from being the second most avid television consumers, Filipinos especially teenagers, have become increasingly immersed to watching romantic-themed teleseryes by the different emerging love teams such as JaDine and KathNiel. The evident fandom to these love teams lead to the conduct of the study to identify the effects of the scripted portrayal of a romantic love and relationship to the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on romantic love. Research design using qualitative and quantitative approach was utilized. George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory was used to answer how exposure affects the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers on romantic love. The survey was conducted among 90 qualified respondents across (3) three public high schools in Miag-ao, Iloilo. The 5—point Likert scale was used to measure the influence of the two love teams' teleseyes in the perceptions and the attitudes of teenagers. Results show that high exposure on teleseryes affect teenagers' perceptions and attitudes on romantic love as portrayed by the love teams. However, it was also noted as per results, that not all that were shown in the teleseryes are being mirrored by teenagers as real since they also critic if those depictions of romantic love really happen in reality.

Benitez, Ninotchka Vyent B.; Fuentes, Elyssa Marie C.; Jurilla, Raphaela Joy C.; Manderico, Rommel Vincent D.; Mateo, Mary Diadem O.; Raymundo, Nicollete Joy D.; Siojo, Chloe Naty Marie Eugenie A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)
Refractive error is the number one cause of childhood blindness in the Philippines with a prevalence rate of 53% (3rd National Blindness Survey, 2004). Color blindness is an abnormal condition characterized by the inability to clearly distinguish different colors of the spectrum. This is a descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to assess the visual acuity using the Snellen Chart and prevalence of color blindness using the Ishihara pseudochromatic plates, among private and public elementary school pupils in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. A total of 324 elementary pupils were included, 113 of them belonged to private school and 214 belonging to public school. The prevalence for both error of refraction (83/63) and color blindness (52/60) is significantly higher in private school than in public school. Age is a factor in developing both disorders. There is a direct correlation between higher income, and error of refraction and color blindness. Several factors could attribute to the results, including diagnostic procedures and lifestyle of the pupils. This study should help raise awareness regarding error of refraction and color blindness to the public, most especially to the parents who tend to neglect the visual performance of their children.

A descriptive study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminism
Belen, Marian Davie (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)
This is a gender study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminism. This study aims to describe the perceptions of UPV CAS female students on family, marriage, employment, rights and duties, feminism, feminist movement and feminists, contemporary Filipina and economics and politics, and to determine if their perceptions are feminist in leaning. The researcher conducted a survey by giving out questionnaires to UPV CAS female students. Moreover, gender-related materials in the library were also utilized such as books, magazines, journals, etc. The respondents were chosen through the stratified random sampling technique. The study reveals that the responses, considering all year levels, do not seem to vary considerably. There has not been so much difference in their responses although younger students seemed quite conservative in their outlook in some matters. The study also reveals that the respondents had a positive perception towards feminism since most of their responses on the items were feminist in leaning. Most of their responses indicate that women these days are more or less enjoying a favorable status in society, although they still believe that gender inequality still exists. Moreover, they think that feminism is still necessary for Filipinas.

Group study vs. individual study: A comparison of effective study technique
Bang-as, Erlie P.; Toles, Elohai N. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03-31)
This study was an attempt to find out which of the two study techniques is effective: group study or individual study. It also sought to know which of the two academic groups performed better in a group study or in an individual study. The respondents were 60 students from the Biological and Social Sciences Divisions. Subjects were selected using the simple random sampling. The design was a 2 (Group study and Individual study) x 2 (Biological Sciences and Social Sciences) factorial design and this tested three hypotheses; (1) To find out if students perform better when they study in groups than when they study alone; (2) To find out if Biology students perform better than Social Science students; (3) To know if Biology students perform better than Social Science students when they study in groups than when they study alone The researchers used the 2x2 Analysis of Variance in the analysis of the data. The results were obtained by using the ANOVA and F test was used to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that (1) students who studied in groups performed better than those who studied individually, (2) Biology students performed better than Social Science students and (3) there was an interaction between study techniques and the academic groups.

Arzaga, Marie Christine E.; Taladtad, Mary Jane E. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)
The study seeks to determine the different reasons for dropping out of school among high school dropouts in Barangay Indag-an and Barangay Tan-agan, Miag-ao, Iloilo. Specifically, it wants to find out: (1) the financial status of the family, (2) the student-teacher relationship, and (3) the social activities of the students at the time of dropping out. Twenty one (21) respondents composed of eighteen (18) males and three (3) females participated in the study. All of them were high school dropouts found in Barangay Indag-an and Barangay Tan-agan, Miag-ao Iloilo who have dropped out of school from the recent 2002 to the last ten years. This study used interview schedule to measure the differences of reasons for dropping out. The instrument was made up of three parts: financial status of the family, the student-teacher relationship, and social activities of the students at the time of dropping out. The frequency and percentage distribution were utilized in interpreting the data. The results of this study revealed that financial status of the respondent’s family and the social activities they engaged in were the greatest factor in motivating them to quit schooling. Student-teacher relationship on the other hand, had the least motivation for students to quit schooling.

The relationship between Mathematics anxiety and test performance in Mathematics of secondary school students
Atienza, Quintin G., II; Elisterio, Diogel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03-13)
The math anxiety and math test performance of 192 secondary school students from Palaca-Damilisan National High School were assessed using a math anxiety questionnaire and a math test. This was done to find out the effects of math anxiety on high school students’ math test performance. Sex and year level differences on math anxiety and math test performance were also investigated using the analysis of variance. Findings reveal that math anxiety affects math test performance negatively. No statistically significant sex differences were found in both math anxiety and math test performance. No statistically significant year level differences were found in math anxiety. Year-level differences were found to be statistically significant in math test performance. Year level math test performance means showed a decreasing pattern from first year to third year but the means went up in the third year. Tukeys HSD showed that significant differences were coming from the differences in the means of the first and second year levels and the first and third year levels.
