Negrosanon, indi tikalon: The severed ties between Ilonggo and Negrense identity and the creation of Negrense "Tikalon" stereotype
Caberte, Kizhi G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)
The Negrense "tikalon" stereotype has acquired popularity in recent years as a result of its virality on numerous social media platforms. The amusing banter between Ilonggos and Negrenses culminated in the return of the long-established "tikalon" stereotype. This piqued the researchers' curiosity in investigating the phenomenon and studying its emergence. This study investigates the "tikalon" stereotype of Negrense identity and how it can be explained using economic scarcity theory. The researchers argues that the Ilonggo people's creation of negative stereotypes about their Negrense neighbors, such as "tikalon" and "hambog" (proud), was a result of their insecurity over their own economic shortcomings in comparison to Negros Occidental’s economic affluence during the 1930s. When the sugar industry prospered in Negros due to a new generation of entrepreneurs who established big plantations at the time, it created a significant gap between Negros Occidental and Iloilo. This study utilizes narrative by Ilonggos in addition to a literary analysis of the works of Ramon Muzones through Ma. Cecilia Locsin-Nava. This paper asserts that Ilonggos who experienced economic deprivation channeled their anxiety and frustrations by creating the stereotypes about Bacolodnon in order to maintain and uphold the preexisting status quo.

The relationship of children's concern and the couple's empty-nest stress experiences with their relationship purpose
Cabarles, Irene Grace S.; Tan, Cesa, Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)
This correlational study aimed to find out whether the degree of children’s concern for their parents and the empty-nest stress experiences of these parents have an effect on their relationship purpose. A total of 40 couples participated in the study. The Children’s Concern Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Relationship Purpose Scale were utilized for the data gathering. Generally, the results revealed that the higher the concern showed by the children to their empty-nest parents, the more likely that the empty-nest couple will focus on their marital relationship. However, the average amount of stress experienced by the empty-nest couples does not have a significant relationship with their relationship purpose.

Conviviality and rebranding the T'nalak Festival's celebration of cultural diversity towards unity in South Cotabato
Caaya, Hinz Benedict S., III (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-07)
The T’nalak Festival in South Cotabato has gained attention in recent years due to its entertaining activities and unique cultural experience. During the festival, the multi- ethnoreligious cultures of the province are being highlighted especially in its street dancing event despite the history of conflicts in Mindanao. With an increasing interest in the festival, this study explores the T’nalak festival in the field of Festival Research particularly on the Cultural Studies perspective. Guided by Gerard Delanty’s Theory on Cultural Encounters specifically the encounter of cultural acceptance and Orly Levy et al’s definition of Cosmopolitanism, this study argues that in South Cotabato’s T’nalak Festival cultural acceptance is actively being reinforced for promoting unity in diversity and cosmopolitanism. Furthermore, this allows the province to utilize the festival in rebranding its image away from a province pictured with conflict and violence to a province of peaceful coexistence. Through an oral interview of festival organizers, initiators, tourism employees, community workers, volunteer, and festival participants along with analyzing government reports, pictures, videos, and existing literatures. This study finds that the T’nalak festival is a conscious effort - an invented tradition for the promotion of harmonious relationship among the multi-ethnoreligious population and a strategy that counters the negative perception about South Cotabato. The festival serves as an avenue for promotion, celebration, education and information, preservation, and unity along with the assertion of the individual local and collective community identities.

Exposure of Ilonggo viewers to "My husband's lover" and "Dading" and their attitude towards homosexual parenthood
Briones, Marie Jeanje; Nagallo, Larry John (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)
This study explores the relationship between the level of exposure of Ilonggo viewers to gay themed dramas “My Husband’s Lover” and “Dading” and their attitude towards homosexual parenthood in terms of condemnation and tolerance, contact, morality, and stereotypes. The socio-demographic profile (gender, age, marital status, occupation, socio-economic, religion, and educational attainment) and social contact with homosexual parents of the viewers were also measured and correlated to their attitude towards homosexual parenthood. Joseph Klapper’s Reinforcement Theory and Robert Zajonc’s Mere Exposure Theory were employed to construct the theoretical framework of this study. A one shot survey was then administered among 400 respondents for this study as identified employing the Slovin’s Formula at 5% margin of error with 95% confidence level interval based on 2010 Census of Population and Housing Data. The sampling methodology used was Probability to Proportional to Size Sampling design, and to determine the barangays Cumulative Sum was utilized. Results showed that attitude scores towards homosexual parenthood significantly differs across level of exposure to gay themed dramas based on ANOVA result (p-value<0.001). Pairwise comparison further indicates that viewers with low exposure to gay themed dramas also have significantly lower attitude scores as compared to viewers with medium exposure and high exposure. However, no significant difference was found in attitude score between viewers with medium exposure and high exposure. In terms of the socio-demographics, age, gender, educational attainment and social contact to homosexual parents of the viewers also have significant relationship to their attitude towards homosexual parenthood. However, religious affiliations, marital status, and occupation were found statistically insignificant. Results are discussed in the context of Philippine culture.

"When we were young" comparisons and correlates of negative childhood experiences
Bravo, Vivian F.; Madero, Patrick Gabriel G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-06)
Negative childhood experiences in the forms of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction are potentially traumatic events that have long-lasting impacts on individuals. Previous studies have shown that these experiences are linked to negative health outcomes such as health-risk behaviors, chronic diseases, and negative psychological outcomes. There was a rapid increase in studies that investigate negative childhood experiences worldwide but these were mostly saturated in high socioeconomic status (SES) populations. Several studies were conducted to investigate these experiences in poor countries but these were mostly situated abroad. To date, studies on negative childhood experiences that investigate their link to parental SES, current SES, and health outcomes are scarce in the Philippines. Apart from that, local studies that compare the occurrences of these experiences between different SES are also scant. Addressing these gaps, this study utilized respondents from low and middle SES to understand the link between negative childhood experiences, parental SES, current SES, and health outcomes in adulthood. Using descriptive and correlational methods, this study revealed that there are higher incidences of negative childhood experiences in low-SES compared to middle-SES, suggesting that abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction are more common in low SES and poor communities. Associations between these experiences, parental SES, current SES. and health outcomes are also found. More so, it reveals differing health outcomes in low- and middle-SES. The greater implications of these findings are discussed. The findings of this study support the need for prevention and intervention for negative childhood experiences.

Factors affecting the political mobilization of the Lambunao Sulod-Bukidnons in relation to their ancestral land claim
Betita, Ma. Antonette Rose S.; Gaudiel, Kristine T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)
The respondents of the study are the Sulod-Bukidnons (Bukidnons) of Jayobo, Lambunao, Iloilo. Their land had been included under the reservation area of the West Visayas State University - College of Agriculture and Forestry (WVSU-CAF) by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 429. Thus, their aim is to regain the land that belonged to them. The study sought to determine the following objectives: (1) the basis of land claims by the Bukidnons, (2) the forms of political mobilization conducted over their land claims (3) the factors that affect it, and (4) the role of the outside sectors in asserting their land claims. The study was descriptive and exploratory in nature which employed structured interview to gather data from 91 Bukidnon respondents aged 18 years old and above. Key Informant Interviews with the President and Vice-President of Bukidnon United Tribe Association (BUTA) and direct observation were also used. Chi-square (with 0.05 level of significance) was used as a statistical tool to determine the relationship of the variables. The results of the study showed that ancestral domain/inheritance was the basis of the Bukidnons in claiming their lands. The Bukidnons have utilized three forms of conventional and non-violent political mobilization: negotiations, petitions and assemblies. Age is one factor that affected Bukidnons to participate in negotiations. The study showed that Bukidnons above 60 did not participate in the negotiation. Higher educational attainment is also a factor that engaged them in negotiation. The lack of awareness of the size of the land involved in the conflict made the Bukidnons not participative. Also, the minimal importance given by the Bukidnons to their land in terms of housing and self-determination made them not participate in the negotiation. In the filing of petitions as another form of mobilization, only the awareness on the negotiation of Certificate of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) was seen as a factor for the Bukidnons to engage in such mobilization. The reason for this was that they saw the fling of petitions as a way to hasten up the granting of Ancestral Domain Title (ADT). Assembly was another mobilization where most members had participated. Membership in BUTA was seen as a factor in joining the assembly. Attendance in assemblies showed sense of membership and support to the cause of their association. The presence of help from outside sectors and the help from both members and leaders of BUTA likewise encouraged Bukidnons to be participative in assemblies. PANLIPI Legal Assistance Center, National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and Philippine Association for Intercultural Development played a major role in helping the cause of the Bukidnons. They had provided legal and technical assistance to the IPs. Lastly, the awareness on the petition filed and their assertion over their land claims made the Bukidnons to mobilize. The findings showed that the Bukidnons have long been working for the granting of their ancestral domain title. They perceived that once their ADT has been granted to them, the issue with WVSU will also be resolved. They do not oppose the presence of the university in the barangay; most of them simply ask to redefine the land and regain the area that belonged to them. At the end of the study, the researchers recommend further academic studies on the political mobilization of the Bukidnons. A policy recommendation is advised that BUTA members should take active role on the issue. Information dissemination and inculcation of IPs’ rights can be decisive factors to increase participation in mobilization. NCIP should give uttermost importance to the granting of the land of IPs and be more responsive to the needs and grievances of the IPs.

A content analysis of 12 episodes of the radio comedy-drama Toyang Ermitanya
Bantiquete, Theola H.; Galanza, Siena Therese M.; Gersabalino, Jeniffer G. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)
This study “A Content Analysis of the Radio-Comedy Drama Toyang Ermitanya” aims:(1) to identify the various issues presented in the 12 episodes of the drama (Episodes 256-267, aired in July 2003); (2) to classify the issues into different categories such as political, social, economic, religious, educational and others (gender issues); (3) to determine which of the six categories are frequently raised, and; (4) to determine whether or not the drama reflects social reality. The researchers used a sell-devised descriptive code sheet in analyzing and categorizing the issues that are presented in the drama. They set six categories where each issue would fall. Percentage distribution was used to determine which among the six categories is frequently raised. They also provided actual samples of the issues under each category, quoted in the Hiligaynon language with its corresponding translation in English. Researched on the events that happened in July 2003--the time when the 12 episodes were aired over Bombo Rady Iloilo— were then related to the issues that were presented in the 12 episodes of the drama in order to determine whether or not Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. This study is significant for it provides an in-depth treatment of the societal issues, thus, making people aware of the prevalent issues confronting the society at the same time. Second, it serves as an important tool in analyzing the role of media in presenting various issues of the society in a manner that almost everyone can relate to. In the process, it will guide media practitioners in producing a satirical program that will catch the interest, and at the same time, meet the need of the society in terms of information and entertainment. The researchers identified 163 issues that were raised in the 12 episodes of the drama Toyang Ermitanya. Results of the study show that social issues are frequently raised in the drama. It is followed by political, economic, religious, others (gender issues), and finally, educational which got a zero percentage. Using the Cone-effect theory, the study shows that Radio Comedy-Drama Toyang Ermitanya reflects social reality. The study would have been better if the researchers interviewed the producer/ scriptwriter of Toyang Ermitanya. For future researchers, the researchers recommend that research on another radio drama be done to further validate this study’s claim that radio dramas are not only for entertainment, but, are also a good source of information and reflect social realities.

Self-concept, social support, and subjective well-being of stay-at-home fathers from San Joaquin and Miagao, Iloilo
Barreto, Ann Margarette; Sina-on, Arianne Krystelle (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)
This study on stay-at-home fathers was undertaken due to role reversal brought about by female labor migration. Given that males have taken on relatively new roles as full time parent to their children due to the migration of their wives, changes on their self-concept, the social support that they received, and their levels of subjective well-being were investigated. Ten stay-at-home fathers from the towns of San Joaquin and Miag-ao in southern Iloilo served as participants of this qualitative study. The respondents’ ages range from 27-56 years old. All of the respondents have children, and their wives have been working abroad for not less than a year. The results of this study show that stay-at-home fathers have high levels of subjective well-being as a result of them having positive self-concept and available social support from friends, immediate family members, and relatives. The results of this study can serve as basis in establishing effective programs that will provide support for stay-at-home fathers.

Continuity and change: A generational comparison of the social representations of Martial Law in the Philippines (1972-1986)
Bandoy, Laarni Lee V.; Mecenas, Eunice Marinelle Pamela C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-07)
A nation’s understanding of past events has implications on its national identity since it provides a point of commonality and continuation especially for nationally significant events. For the Philippines, this would be the Martial Law Period (1972-1986). Social psychological inquiries into the representation of military7 dictatorship were explored through the construct of collective memories, and previous studies on the representations of history have found that they arc aligned with Mannheim’s theory of generational effects. The current study intended to explore the generational differences in the social representations of Martial Law in the Philippines using a structural approach to Moscovici’s Social Representation Theory. Employing a mixed-method approach, this study made use of the Hierarchical Evocation Model to analyze the data collected. The findings of this study show that there is both continuity and change in the social representations of the two generational cohorts who experienced and did not experience living through the Martial Law Period. The social representations of both cohorts were grounded on concepts like politics, power, and social values such as human rights and freedom. One difference was how their social representations of the Martial Law Period were structured since the younger cohort lacked a central core, indicating a gradual change of social representations of the period over time. The way the period was objectified also differed, as the older cohort mentioned a larger selection of socio-economic changes during the period, and the younger cohort mentioned concepts of democracy and the EDSA Revolution. This study supports the generational effects conceptualized by Mannheim (1952), reflects the convergence of social representations of two generations through time as observed by Montiel (2010), and may be useful in identifying the changes in the social representations of the Martial Law Period because of historical distortion.

Balsamo, Ethel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-04)
This study deals with gender analysis on the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. Its aims to (1) identify the role of women portrayed in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, (2) to describe the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, and (3) to explain the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. The twelve films of Carlos Siguion Reyna were briefly presented to aid for further understanding of the study. Different roles of women portrayed in the films were enumerated and were explained briefly into their portrayal. Violence against women was categorized into physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Finally, a gender analysis was used to assess the portrayal of violence against women in the films of Carlos Siguion Reyna. In this study, data were gathered through self-analysis of the ten films of Carlos Siguion Reyna with the help of some film reviews of his films. Violence against women is evident in the films of director and it comes in many forms, be it physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Patriarchy, women seen as sex object are some of the factors that contributed to the violence toward women and it happens in most social groups and all income levels. The ideas and images of women in reality are reinforced in the mass media on which people model their behavior and attitudes. Thus, indeed there is a relationship between the social condition of women in reality and the portrayal of violence against women in films.
