    To run or not to run: Intentions of politicians to participate in politics

    The overall purpose of the study was to investigate the intentions of Filipino politicians to participate in politics, guided by Leek Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior. The study employed qualitative methodology involving a total of 10 interviews with political candidates from the province of Aklan. Participants were recruited using criterion sampling. Results showed that attitude towards political participation, perceived pressure from the public, political parties, and family members, belief in one’s capacity to pursue political activities, and past experience largely influence the intentions of politicians to engage in politics; and their intentions, in turn, were translated into actual political participation. Past experience and belief in one’s capacity to pursue political activities were found to directly influence political engagement, and all identified factors were also found to be associated with one another. The relationships of all the constructs were consistent with our modified model of the Theory of Planned Behavior. Overall, the study offered support to the use of qualitative methodology in utilizing the Theory of Planned Behavior as a theoretical framework. The study also provided evidence that past experience could be included in the model of the Theory of Planned Behavior.

    Beep beep beep, ano ang sabi ng jeep? Stories of PUJ drivers in Iloilo City during the COVID-19 pandemic

    This qualitative study focused on the narratives of Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) drivers who operated within Iloilo City' before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven (7) PUJ drivers who have at least five (5) years of experience as a PUJ driver and consider driving PUJs as their main source of income during the COVID-19 pandemic were recruited from different Jeepney Owners and Drivers’ Associations (JODRAs) in Iloilo City. An in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted with the PUJ drivers and two key informants. Open-ended questions were used which were then recorded and transcribed verbatim. The narratives of the PUJ drivers were analyzed using Narrative Thematic Analysis. The results of this study provided insights into the experiences of PUJ drivers, including the challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, their coping strategies, and the lessons learned from these experiences. The drivers encountered various challenges, such as financial hardship, physical and mental health concerns, and uncertainty about the future. To cope with the stress, they employed diverse strategies, such as seeking support from their networks, relying on religion and spirituality, distracting themselves, embracing their reality, and in some cases, denying the existence of the pandemic. The significance of social support, financial preparedness, awareness, and readiness for future crises was also emphasized. With these findings, the recommendations include access to healthcare and well-being, economic support and financial resilience, social support networks, comparative studies, and further research on the long-term impacts of COVID-19.

    When parents are absent: A study on the role of grandmothers in child rearing

    This study examined the role of the grandmothers in a caregiving role. Role theory was used as a framework to guide this qualitative study. Four grandmothers who provided care for their grandchildren were interviewed. The result showed that grandmothers’ role had shifted from a traditional role to a grandmother caregiver role. As a consequence, grandmothers experienced stress, challenges, on-time or off-time role, life changes, and at the same time positive experiences. They experienced stress, challenges, and difficulties due to the role timing and role strain which hindered them to perform their role successfully. This research also showed that grandmothers, despite their old age, play a major role in child rearing especially when the parents of the children were absent.
