Item Buang, abno, kulang-kulang: Social representations of mental illnessCabrias, Xenia Monica B. (Department of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2019-06)Using the structural approach to the study of Social Representations, my research unraveled professional and lay understandings of mental illness. I also explored how social representations function as knowledge, orientation justification, and identity. I collected questionnaire data from 107 mental health service providers and 111 lay residents from four out of five districts of Iloilo province. Abric’s (2008) Hierarchical Evocation Method was used as methodological framework. My findings show that both groups align in their central understanding that mental illness is a neuropsychological disorder. My findings further suggest that both groups’ internal organization fuse into a global organization of meanings. Furthermore, both groups have a broader understanding that mental illness is both a societal and an individual affliction.Item Resist the urge: Exploring the sources of abstinence self-efficacy of drug rehabilitation residents in Iloilo CityBoston, Marycon Anne C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)Integrating Albert Bandura’s Self-Efficacy Theory in substance abuse, this study seeks to identify the factors which contribute to abstinence self-efficacy of illicit drug users. In evaluating the sources of efficacy: mastery experience, vicarious experience, social persuasion, and emotional arousal, drug rehabilitation residents (n =139) in Iloilo were administered scales and questionnaires. A Pearson product-moment correlation was utilized to examine the relationship of the sources and abstinence efficacy. Eight residents with the highest and lowest efficacy ratings were interviewed, and two focused group discussions were conducted to provide an in-depth understanding of the relationship of the variables. Results of the quantitative analysis indicated that the four hypothesized sources do not significantly correlate with drug abstinence efficacy. Cognitive appraisal through assessing the difficulty of abstinence, personal control, and the varying interpretation of experiences served as mediators in affecting efficacy. The physical cravings elicited by drug use prevents the residents to develop self-efficacy and be positively influenced by the external factors. Given that self-efficacy can predict future performance or outcome, the findings aid in enhancing rehabilitation interventions crucial for building efficacy and lifetime abstinence.Item Types and severity of sexual harassment among female college students in a non-traditional degree programBacanto, Jay Ann B.; Quilantang, Ma. Ellaine N. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)This descriptive study aimed to find out the perception of female college students in a non- traditional degree towards the types and severity of sexual harassment. Fifty-four (54) female students, who were officially enrolled in the College of Criminology at the University of Iloilo for school year 2002-2003 during the second semester, participated in the research. Perception on sexual harassment was measured using a revised scale on the Perception of the types and severity of sexual harassment developed by Baker, Terpstra, and Larntz (1990). The scale has six scenarios reflecting the types and severity of sexual harassment, whereas females working in a male- dominated workplaces were being sexually harassed by male co-workers. The mean scores and standard deviations were utilized to interpret the data. The results of the study revealed that incidents having sexual coercion were perceived higher compared to other types of sexual harassment (x=1.17; s=3.66). Types of sexual harassment with an element of physical contact were perceived to be more sexually harassing (x=5.41; s=4.61).It further revealed that sexual harassment with physical contact were perceived most sexually harassing (x=2.43; s= 1.09).Item Sexual self-scheme and sexual aggrression of male readers of Lad magazineAspero, Maris Pylene P.; Faramiran, Zyreen Lou B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-10)This study was conducted to find out the impact of reading lad magazines on the sexual self-schema and sexual aggression in men. One hundred men of fifty readers and fifty non-readers of lad magazines, from a male dominated institution, 18 to 30 years old served as participants of this study. A survey was conducted and four (4) instruments were used to measure the readership, sexual self-schema, and sexual aggression of men. The design of this study was correlational. To show the relationship between the variables, data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational statistic. The results of this research show that readership of lad magazines is associated with high sexual self-schema in the study sample and the likelihood of being sexually aggressive in comparison to non-readers. Men learned information regarding sex through lad magazines. These magazines also present women in a sexually arousing manner through their pictures and articles. Men's lifestyle was also affected by their readership of lad magazines.Item Work-family conflict, stress, and satisfaction among married female public elementary teachersArsenio, John Clint C.; Supnet, J P.
