    Abundance, distribution, and composition of macrobenthos in Banate Bay, Iloilo, Philippines

    In order to characterize the macrobenthic community in Banate Bay, quarterly sampling was done from December 2012 to December 2013 in nine (9) stations of the study area. Samples were collected using a hand-held mud corer measuring 0.15m in diameter. Samples were sieved in the field using a 0.5mm mesh, preserving all retained organisms in a plastic container containing 10% buffered formalin with Rose Bengal dye. Two (2) replicate samples per station in June and September 2013 were processed in the laboratory. A total of 38 taxa were sorted and identified with overall mean density of 821 ind/m2. Cluster Analysis using the program COMM grouped species according to their abundances and stations based on their relative location from the shore. T-test for 2 sample means showed that densities in June and September did not differ significantly (p=0.42). ANOVA showed that densities per station did differ significantly (p=0.05). Correlations identified salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and organic matter content to have negative effects on macrobenthos density in the Bay. In spite of low density, diversity particularly of polychaetes appeared to be relatively high. This can be attributed to the intensity and fluctuations of the harsh environment in the Bay still being within limits.

    Interest groups in local politics: A case study of the establishment of marine protected areas in San Joaquin, Iloilo

    Interest groups play an important role in local policy-making. Policy space has been created for interest groups by the decentralization mandated by the Local Government Code of 1991. This study aimed to describe the role of interest groups in local policy-making, especially with regards to the environment. This study explores the stages interest groups participate in more and the resources, strategies and tactics that they used in their participation. The study was conducted in the 22 coastal barangays of San Joaquin, Iloilo, with the different interest groups involved in the MPA formation as the unit of analysis. The actors involved included the municipal government, the coastal barangays, and the business sector. It was found out that the agenda-setting and policy formulation stages of the policy-making process are the stages interest groups participate in more because of their access to resources such as university researchers, scientific experts. The use of expert knowledge to convince other stakeholders was effective, such that there was very little opposition of the establishment of project. Although the Code provided interest groups a space in the local policy-making process, factors such as available resources, strategies, and tactics affect this participation.

    Implementation of marine-protected area in San Jose, Antique: A social analysis

    This study was designed to evaluate the marine protected area (MPA) implementation in San Jose, Antique using socio-economic and governance indicators. Data were gathered through personal interview of fishers using an interview schedule and focus group discussion (FGD) with selected participants from the municipal government and barangays. A total of 125 fishers were chosen from the four barangays affected by the MPA, namely: Brgy. 3, Brgy. 4, Brgy. Madrangca and Brgy. Funda Dalipe through systematic random sampling. The results showed that the presence of the MPA have not made a significant change in the income of the fishers. Fishers believed that fish abundance and fish catch is relatively higher in 2003 compared to the present. Marine resources are highly valuable to the fishers since it is their source of income (64%) and food (33%). They also believed that the resources are already depleted (51%) due to uncontrolled fishing (28%). In addition, the management plan was not followed. There was no specific budget intended for MPA. There was a low degree of participation and stakeholder empowerment. Also, it was observed that though most (91%) of the fishers were aware of the MPA, there was less involvement in MPA activities, particularly of the fishers from Brgy Madrangca, Brgy 3, and Brgy. 4. To improve the MPA management in the area, there should be provision of income diversification program in the coastal barangays, proper information dissemination, a specific budget intended for the MPA and involvement of all the affected barangays.

    Spatial variations of Benthic meiofauna communities from Palompon Bay, Northern Leyte

    Meiofauna play a significant role in maintaining ecological balance in marine ecosystems especially in the dynamics of the seagrass meadows. The meiofauna links the upper trophic level with detritus-feeding organisms. Only few studies have been conducted in the Philippines, while no studies have been. This study was conducted in Palompon, northern Leyte in November 2011, to determine the spatial distribution of meiobenthic fauna in the area and to compare community structure in terms of species composition, species density, and species diversity among five stations included in the survey. Twenty taxa were identified with nematodes being numerically dominant, followed by harpacticoid copepods. It also showed the highest mean abundance for the entire habitat type. The overall mean density was 194585.1528 ind. m2, with the highest population at station 4. And the lowest population was recorded at station 2. Soft bottom habitat showed the highest recorded mean density among the 5 stations, Harpacticoids mostly dominated sandy substrate while nematodes were widely distributed.

    Species composition, abundance, and distribution of sea anemone in the intertidal zones of Taklong Island and vicinity, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras

    Sea anemones are large solitary polyps that inhabit marine environments. They are the ocean dwelling members of Class Anthozoa under Phylum Cnidaria. These carnivorous animals are common along sea shores, in bays and estuaries but are never found in fresh waters. Sea anemones form a symbiotic relationship with many other marine animals which include anemonefishes and anemoneshrimps. Due to the very little information known about sea anemones in the Philippines, this study was conducted, which specifically focuses on the species composition, abundance, and distribution of sea anemones along the intertidal zones of Taklong Island and vicinity, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. A total census was done along the intertidal areas around Taklong Island which includes five specific areas namely, Salangan (UP channel), Likuan (area from Salangan going to Takpan-lapad), Takpan-lapad, Kalaparan, and Talisay Cove; and Piagao Cove of Tandog Island. Five out of the 10 host species of sea anemone are found along the intertidal zones of Taklong Island and vicinity: Entacmea quadricolor and Macrodactyla doreensis which belong to the family Actiniidae; Heteractis crispa and Stichodactyla gigantea which belong to the family Stichodactylidae and Cryptodendrum adhaesivum which belongs to the family Thalassianthidae. Heteractis crispa was the most dominant species, comprising 77% of the total sea anemone population, followed by Stichodactyla gigantea with 11%, then by Entacmea quadricolor and Cryptodendrum adhaesivum with 5%. Macrodactyla doreensis was the rarest species comprising only 1.3% of the total population. All 5 species of sea anemones were host anemones that harbored a variety of marine organisms namely anemoneshrimps, clownfishes (Amphiprion clarkii, A. frenatus, A. perideraion, A. ocellaris, and Premnas biaculeatus) and an anemonefish Dascyllus trimaculatus. Some of these anemone-fish relationships are specific, such as the relationship of Amphiprion frenatus to Entacmea quadricolor. The different species of sea anemones varied in their locations, some species are located only in sandy substrates, some only in coralline substrates and some in both. Distribution of each species along the 6 areas included in the intertidal zones of Taklong Island and vicinity also varied. Species such as Cryptodendrum adhaesivum and Macrodactyla doreensis were found only in Talisay Cove while the other species were distributed along the 6 areas. Piagao Cove contained only Heteractis crispa and Talisay Cove contained all 5 species.
