Item Locus of control of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers: Its relation to their academic adjustmentBataan, Arminda A.; Losare, Anna Marie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study sought to determine the kind of locus of control of the respondents and the level of academic adjustment as seen in their grade point averages. The researchers aimed to find out if there exists a relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. This study was patterned on a previous research on the relationship between the same variables but this study utilized a different instrument and respondents came from Iloilo province. Fifteen (15) college students whose fathers were imprisoned at the time that they were enrolled served as respondents of the study. All respondents came from Iloilo, 33% of which are from Iloilo City and the remaining 67% are from the municipalities. Their ages range from 17-24. Respondents were selected using the snowball method. Respondents were asked to answer the Trice Academic Locus of Control Scale. The scale is composed of 28 items answerable by true or false determined the kind of locus of control of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. In addition, the respondents were asked to submit their copy of grades of the previous semester to determine how well they adjust academically. The computed Pearson Product Moment Correlation is r=0.26 with a rcrit=0.441 at 0.05 alpha. This signifies that indeed there is a significant relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. However, it revealed a weak positive correlation between locus of control and academic adjustment. The findings imply that locus of control is not the sole cause or factor for academic adjustment. The cause or source of a well-adjusted academic performance of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers may therefore be attributed to other factors such as economic and social support coming from family and friends. Such factors could even lead to a poor academic performance. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)This is a descriptive study which sought to determine the following: (1) the levels of self-esteem among househusbands, (2) their coping strategies towards problems and stress, (3) and their views on the concept of masculinity. Twenty-eight househusbands with wives working abroad participated in the study. The research utilized the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale, the COPE Inventory, and a masculinity scale to measure the three variables respectively. The results yielded a high level of self-esteem for these househusbands. For the coping strategies, it was found out that the three most often used coping styles were that of religious, followed by planning, and active coping. The least employed was the substance use coping probably because it is highly associated with being an irresponsible father and husbands. On the other hand, there was no significant difference found between the househusbands’ who had traditional and progressive views on masculinity.Item Women in male dominated institution: A look into the experiences of female BS Marine Transportation students of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-ArevaloAlegre, Anavie R.; Cortez, Jee Princess C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-04)This study sought to determine the gendered experiences of female students in John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation Maritime University - Arevalo and its implications on the integration of women in male dominated courses and professions. This study utilized Joan Acker's theory of gendered organizations as point of reference on how organizations reproduce and maintain sexualized attitudes and assumptions. This study explores female students’ (1) learning experiences, (2) the attitudes of teachers towards them, (3) their relationship with male classmates, (4) access to scholarships, gender sensitive facilities and programs, (5) their perceptions on their experiences and its (5) implications to seafaring works. The data collection made use of unstructured interview schedules and focus group discussions with female students to reveal their experiences, attitudes and assumptions on studying in a male-dominated institution geared towards a male-dominated career. In-depth interviews were also conducted with professional and general education teachers, administrators and the staff of JBLFMU. The findings of the study convey that female students in the university experience benevolent sexism, which refers to considerations, special treatments towards female students in the said university. This treatment encompasses designation of safer and easier tasks to female students. This entails that subtle sexism exists in the university. In addition, despite initial efforts to promote gender equality in the university system, the JBLFMU still lacks mechanisms that cater to the needs of tlie female students.
