Item A comparative study on the perceived work stress, work-related stressors, and coping strategies of fish vendors in AntiqueCabigunda, Greshanne J.; Moquera, Mabelle M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-07)Fish vending is a common source of income in Antique, Philippines. Fish vendors are classified into two vendor groups: formal vendors who sell inside public markets and informal vendors who sell their products on the streets. Research shows that these groups encounter varied work experiences given their differing working conditions. However, existing research is not enough to describe their stressful work experiences as well as their coping strategies. Thus, this research study aimed to describe and compare the work-related stress of fish vendor groups in Antique and how they cope with it. To address these, a convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. A total of 40 fish vendors with a mean age of 44.70 years, classified as formal (20) and informal (20), served as respondents. Data were gathered using a one-on-one interview with a question guide and a modified survey instrument for levels of perceived work stress (LPWS). Mann-Whitney U analysis revealed no significant difference between the overall LPWS of both groups (W= 4272.50, p>0.05). However, per dimension analysis of results showed a significant difference in the physical work environment dimension (W= 85.50, p<0.001). Conceptual content analysis also indicated that work-related stressors and coping strategies are relatively different between vendor groups and across dimensions. The findings of this research suggest that the physical work environment is a significant dimension that differentiates fish vendor groups’ levels and sources of work stress. Moreover, findings imply that social resources, especially among co-vendors, reduce LPWS.Item Embryonic development and hatching rate of grouper (Epinephelus suillus) eggs incubated at different stocking densitiesBofill, Aileen B. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-04)Fertilized eggs of the grouper Epinephelus suillus were obtained from natural spawning of broodstock reared in a 50—t concrete tank at the Aquaculture Department of the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center, Tigbauan, Iloilo. The development of eggs incubated at three different stocking densities (50, 1OO, and 150 eggs/1) were monitored. Hatching rates in the different treatments were also determined. Fertilized eggs were floating, non—adhesive, transparent, and spherical in shape with a mean diameter range of 0.83 — 0.84 mm. The yolk was colorless, transparent, and possessed a single oil globule of 0.22 mm in diameter. The eggs have developed into the 2—cell stage 45 min after stocking. Eggs incubated at 1OO eggs/1 hatched 24 h after stocking, while hatching occurred after 27 h and 5 min at 50 eggs/1. No hatching was observed at 150 eggs/1 stocking density even after 28 h post—stocking. Water temperature and salinity during the experiment were 27 ° C and IB ppt, respectively.Item Comparison between commercial pellets and golden apple snail pellets as food for Tilapia nilotica fingerlingsArboleda, Daphne A. (Dision of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-04)The viability of Golden apple snail as food for Tilapia nilotica was determined by comparing it with commercial pellets. The experiment was conducted on February 3, 1997. The two treatments had three replicates each with a stocking density of 15 fingerlings each. Comparison of growth curves showed that fingerlings fed with commercial pellets grew significantly (P< 0.01) faster than those fed with golden apple snail pellets. The computed FCR was also greater for commercial pellets. The results suggest that golden apple snail alone does not promote efficient growth in Tilapia nilotica fingerlings. Thus it is recommended that golden apple snail be combined with other food ingredients to enable its efficient utilization as a protein source.Item A survey of the catch composition of fyke nets in the Iloilo riverAndrada, Kristina Abelaine D. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-04)A survey of the catch composition of fyke nets in the Iloilo River Estuary during the months of August 1999 and February 2000 show that catches are dominated by Metapenaens crisis and ilossygobius sp. The 18 species caught are : 9 fish species, 5 shrimp species, and 4 crab species. The index of similarity 0.3 between the monthly samples is low which means that there is minimal degree of similarity between the species composition of the catches. There is no significant difference between the total catch volumes per day for the months of August 1999 and February 2000 which means that the seasons do not affect the volume of the catch.
