Item A discourse on RPG metanoia using a structural analysis and sociocultural approachBriones, John Nathaniel B. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-03-17)This paper is a study on RPG Metanoia, a Filipino computer generated film released in December 2010. The film features a hero and his adventures in real life and as a player of the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Metanoia. This thesis will be studying RPG Metanoia for the sake of adding academic knowledge regarding computer games themed media and pop culture in literature. Using analysis by Vladimir Propp RPG Metanoia will be subject to formalist structuralism in order to analyze the literary structure of the film. A study by Catherine Gallagher and Stephen Greenblatt will supplement the thesis in order to address structuralism’s limitations and to give this analysis more depth via a socio-cultural approach. Objectives include the intent for analyzing the film via structuralism, comparing the film to related games and media, and studying the film via a socio-cultural perspective. Findings include the successful dissection of the film and proper categorization of each scenario to Propp’s analysis’ functions. Also, New Historicism provides facts supporting the significance of the film as a reflective piece of literature on a particular prevailing attitude Filipinos towards games. Finally, the study also provides a brief comparison and analysis of the games related to RPG Metanoia and reveals the inspiration and motivations behinds the conceptualization of the film. The conclusion confirms RPG Metanoia as a legitimate literary narrative as well as label it as falling under the category of literature structurally similar to folk tales. It also highlights several points regarding the importance of the film as a literary fantasy referencing to the effects of games and technology on the Philippines’ youth and culture.Item Fidelity of the film adaptation of the novel "Fifty shades of grey"Billones, Toni Rose D.; Tumbagahan, Angelique S. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This undergraduate thesis is a critical analysis of film adaptation Fifty Shades of Grey to find out its fidelity to the novel in terms of character, setting, and plot using the Theory of Adaptation by Linda Hutcheon and the interpretation of film adaptations by John Desmond and Peter Hawkes. This study highlights the characteristics of the film as a medium especially when it is adapted from a literary work and selves as a guide for filmmakers in adapting literary works. It recommends that film producers should work with the author to create a more faithful adaptation especially to novel series like Fifty Shades. The analysis uses a codebook designed to allow cues to be counted and tallied to determine the elements carried over in the film adaptation. The researchers conclude that the film Fifty Shades of Grey is an intermediate adaptation of the novel with certain narrative elements specifically the character, setting and plot, undergoing addition or deletion in the adaptation process. The dropping of some characters caused a domino-effect on the other elements such as the setting and plot events. The film adaptation changed the mood of the story, from a very explicit into a more subtle form, by adding scenes that can be categorized as romantic rather than sensualItem Study and stream: University students' behavior on online academic learning and their motivations for binge-watching on NetflixBanting, Ericka Marie; Bitoca, Joyce Anne Marie; Buergo, Angelika (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)The Covid 19 pandemic brought Netflix to unprecedented heights, especially among people aged 18 to 24. The remote setup of learning enabled students to multi-task between their schoolwork and non-academic activities. In particular, this study looks into the phenomenon of binge-watching among communication students from a selected university who are direct subscribers of Netflix. Using the framework designed by Panda and Pandey (2017) on the motivations and outcomes of binge-watching among college students, this research investigates if there is a relationship between the university students' behaviors on online academic learning and the factors that motivate them to binge-watch TV shows/series on Netflix. The research design is quantitative in nature and data analysis utilizes the Pearson's R correlation. Findings show a moderately small, positive correlation between the university students' behavior towards online academic learning and their motivations to binge-watch TV shows/series on Netflix. This means that progress in the student's behavior on online academic learning signifies an increase in their motivations for binge-watching.Item The portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion ReynaBalsamo, Ethel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-04)This study deals with gender analysis on the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. Its aims to (1) identify the role of women portrayed in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, (2) to describe the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, and (3) to explain the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. The twelve films of Carlos Siguion Reyna were briefly presented to aid for further understanding of the study. Different roles of women portrayed in the films were enumerated and were explained briefly into their portrayal. Violence against women was categorized into physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Finally, a gender analysis was used to assess the portrayal of violence against women in the films of Carlos Siguion Reyna. In this study, data were gathered through self-analysis of the ten films of Carlos Siguion Reyna with the help of some film reviews of his films. Violence against women is evident in the films of director and it comes in many forms, be it physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Patriarchy, women seen as sex object are some of the factors that contributed to the violence toward women and it happens in most social groups and all income levels. The ideas and images of women in reality are reinforced in the mass media on which people model their behavior and attitudes. Thus, indeed there is a relationship between the social condition of women in reality and the portrayal of violence against women in films.Item Consciousness of feminism in selected movies among college studentsArtuz, Shara Mae F.; Reyes, Rika Jane T.; Villa, Mae Anne F. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)The study seeks to know the common level of consciousness of feminism in selected films among college students. It anchors on Muzafer Sherifs Social Judgment Theory that sets responses to stimuli along the latitudes of acceptance, non-commitment and rejection. Parallel to this theory, consciousness of feminism is measured as high level, which means the audiences accept and identify the concept of feminism being present in the films included in this study; medium level, which means the audiences find the concept of feminism objectionable in the films included in this study; and low level, which represents that audience does not accept and identify the concept of feminism being present in the films included in this study. The study employs a survey questionnaire given to 353 students of the University of the Philippines Visayas. Results show that over 73% of the respondents have high consciousness level. It is concluded in this study that majority of the students in UP Visayas are highly conscious of feminism in feminist-themed films; are conscious of the concept of feminism or can easily identify it in feminist-themed movies.Item The notions of masculinity in selected Filipino mainstream films from 1982 to 2002Badinas, Sally Rose; Martinez, Charissa Mae (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)This is a descriptive study of the notions of masculinity in selected Filipino mainstream films from 1982 to 2002. Data was gathered through random selection of 24 Filipino Mainstream films, with 8 films representing every 7 years. At most three characters in each film were studied to arrive at the notions of masculinity in the selected medium. Findings revealed that the notions of masculinity are limited only to the Macho and Typical end of the Masculinity-Femininity Spectrum. As gender analysis was used to analyze the results, the conclusion arrived at stated the narrowness of Filipino male movie themes pointing out to the lack of openness of the Filipino society to alternative behavioral patterns to govern the upbringing of the Filipino man. A critical understanding of the representations of masculinity along the cultural spectrum was suggested to produce a more substantive result in related studies in the future.Item Values beyond entertainment: Audience reception on satirical film “Ded na si Lolo”Albesa, Adrianne; Dusaban, Edwin, Jr.; Paguntalan, Angela (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)This study looks into whether or not film enthusiasts recognize socio-cultural verisimilitude in the film Ded na si Lolo. The respondents of this study are film enthusiasts from the University of the Philippines Visayas who are active filmmakers and participate film festivals in Western Visayas. Data collection is done in two sessions of focus group discussion with a total of 12 participants. The film Ded na si Lolo is shown to the participants after which they are asked open-ended questions on their perception. Responses are coded and interpreted through thematic analysis. An observation in this research is that the encoded message in the film is easily decoded if the viewers are familiar with the film elements (i.e. characters, setting, plot., etc.) and also with real life issues and scenarios. However, being too familiar with film elements puts the viewer at risk of misinterpreting the message content or assigning meanings that were not intended by the filmmaker. All are able to recognize the socio-cultural verisimilitude of the film Ded na si Lolo and most of the audience, still, are able to decode the encoded message of the filmmaker. The results imply that Ded na si Lolo, being satirical in nature, has not been very successfull in delivering its message to criticize the funeral customs and beliefs of the Philippine culture. The study concludes that if the satirical purpose of the film is not fully grasped by film enthusiasts who have the ability to analyze and decode messages from the film, this might be even more challenging for the general population.Item Portrayals of women and feminist issues on feminist -themed Filipino movies: A content analysisAlba, Phoebe Ann A.; Basa, Cyprian Jade L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This descriptive study analyzed two feminist-themed movies in the Philippines in terms of their portrayals of women and issues concerning women. Specifically, this study sought to examine how women were portrayed in the selected movies using (1) characterlevel analysis, which included observation of personal characteristics, appearances, and gender roles portrayed by the female characters); and, (2) scene-level analysis, which identified issues of sexualization, subordination, underrepresentation, violence, and acts of empowerment. This study also explored how these portrayals of women and feminist issues relate to the social realities of the films’ milieu. The findings revealed that there were some disparities between Sister Stella L. and Crying Ladies in terms of their portrayal of female characters, most notably in personal appearances and clothing. There were significant presentations of issues concerning women such as sexualization, underrepresentation, subordination, and violence. Female characters in both films were observed to have participated in traditional gender roles as well as in community politics and productive roles. These participation of women in non-traditional feminine roles in the films confirmed that female characters are empowered specifically in welfare, access, conscientization, participation, and control.Item A critical analysis of the movie "Bikini Open"Aportadera, Ela Vanessa; Azarcon, Rudylyne; Baldeviso, Donna Marie; Novelo, Fiona; Punsalan, Jona Marie (Division Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-10-21)This study entitled "A Critical Analysis of the Movie Bikini Open," will find out whether the said film affirms the real state of Philippine Mass Media. The study aims to identify the issues on Phi lippine media depicted in the movie, point out the issues confronting media in the Philippine society, determine the similarities and differences of the issues depicted in the movie with the current state of Philippine media and society, analyze the issues reflected in the movie in the context of Philippine media and society, and point out the implications of the movie on the Philippine media and society. Twelve professionals from Iloilo City coming from the academe, television, radio, and print media and the film's director served as respondents of the study. The study used Critical Theories of Communication in analyzing the film in the context of Philippine media and society. Results of the study indicate that Philippine media tends to serve the interest of the dominating class such as advertisers and media owners who exercise power over those below them intheir pursuit of economic interests. Philippine mass media is leaning towards the practice wherein corporate responsibility takes over social responsibility. With competition, the media resorted to sensationalism and exploitation. Moreover, media content is used as a commodity in order to sell. Finally Philippine media serves as a potent force in shaping the way of life of the people. Although such ills in the media occur, this does not generally speak for the entire Philippine mass media. Thus, this study concluded that the film "Bikini Open" partly affirmed the state of Philippine media in reality.Item Physical characterization of aswang in Filipino filmsArcenio, Ariane G.; Perez, Trexie Jane A. (Division of of Humanities , College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)This study is a content analysis on the physical characterization of aswang in Filipino films. This study determined how the Filipino films characterized aswang. Descriptive research design was used in analyzing and tallying the physical characteristics of aswang in the Filipino concept and in the eight Filipino films. Interviews with film directors were also utilized for additional support of this study. The concept of aswang emerged because of the demonization of women especially the babaylans, by the Spanish priests in the history of the Philippines. It was found out that in both Filipino concept and Filipino films, there were differences on the physical characterization of aswang. Films used the concept of aswang to perform the role of media which is to entertain the audience.
