Item Self-fulfilling prophecy and self-efficacy: Their effects on performanceBeter, Cipriano; Bocala, Mary Ilyich (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-03)Individuals’ performances in academics and in any task-related jobs are sometimes influenced by others’ or one’s own expectations. In addition, a person’s views of his competence and capability could similarly affect its achievement. These were the highlights of the study wherein the researchers sought to investigate the effect of self- efficacy on performance, self-fulfilling prophecy on performance, and the interaction effect of both on performance. Participants of this study consisted of eighty (80) Third Year High school students from two sections of Capiz National High School. A 2 (high and low levels of self-efficacy) x 2 (positive and negative self-fulfilling prophecy) between-subject factorial design was used in this study. The randomly selected participants were asked to answer the General Perceived Self-efficacy Scale. Arbitrarily, their scores were used as a basis for assigning them to either high or low self-efficacy group. There were two phases in the study. In the first phase, the predetermined high efficacious participants viewed a film depicting the successful performance of the student in solving a chemistry problem. Low efficacious participants on the other hand separately viewed a film which depicted the unsuccessful performance of the student. Verbal persuasion was given by the lecturer after each film was shown. In the second phase of the experiment, high efficacious participants were subdivided into two groups. One group was induced with a positive expectation by the confederate and the other group was induced with a negative one. The same procedure was administered with the low efficacious participants. The F-score for the effect of self-efficacy on performance was F(l,80) =0.597, p<05, indicating that the performance scores of students whether they belong in the high or low self-efficacy group had no significant difference. Results further showed that the effect of self-fulfilling prophecy was significant F(l,80)=19.947, p<.05, suggesting that the performance scores of participants regardless what level of self-efficacy group they were assigned had a significant difference. This result suggests that teacher’s expectation (positive or negative) strongly affect students’ performance. On the other hand, findings on the interaction effect of self-efficacy and self-fulfilling prophecy received no strong support.Item Constraints and challenges on the use of emerging media among public high school teachersBenjamin, Louangel Jei D.; Guillen, Kaya A. (Division of Humanties, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines, the Department of Education implemented distance learning which is primarily module-based to accommodate those that do not have the resources. However, literature has shown that teachers still use emerging media in order to communicate with their students. This study aimed to find out the constraints and challenges experienced when using emerging media during distance learning. It was guided by the social presence theory which centers on the differences in the degree of social presence using telecommunications media and how these differences affect the communication in terms of constraints and challenges. Using quantitative research design and a descriptive survey method, public junior high school teachers were given survey questionnaires to report their experiences on the use of emerging media. The results of this study revealed that emerging media plays a significant role despite distance learning being modulebased. The challenges are caused by the digital divide that led to the lack of budget and technological infrastructure while constraints are more concerned with the intimacy and immediacy depending on where the type of emerging media falls on the social presence scale. Overall, the challenges and constraints encountered by the respondents in using emerging media affects the communication and by extension, the teaching and learning experience in distance learning.Item The agricultural education outreach project in Aklan: Barangay Sibalew, BangaBautista, Reynold R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-07)This study uses the concept of agricultural extension as a catalyst of change for rural development. Suffice it to say, the objective of agricultural extension is to provide the rural people the appropriate information, technology and values to make them self-reliant in the context of their own environment. However, the realisation of this goal is dependent on the extent of acceptance and participation of the rural people themselves. In this study, the Aklan Agricultural College-Agricultural Education Outreach Project in Aklan is supposed to bring self- reliance among the farmers of barangay Sibalew, Bangs by effective transfer of appropriate technology. Based on the principles of extension service, it has been determined that the A.E.0.p project in Sibalew, particularly its economic and social services, has been instrumental in improving the productivity and income and broadly, the social and economic aspects or the farmers life. Needless to say, the A.E.0.P-introduced technologies have been embraced by the majority of farmers in the barangay--which exemplifies the effectiveness of the A.E.O.P project.Item Disorientation and queering action in distance education: The queer lived experiences of the queer Filipino teacherBalensoy, Timoteo C., III (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-05)Queer studies highlight that beyond the idea of gender and sexuality, queerness branches through a vast field of disciplines and focus, urging scholarly interest towards the queer phenomenological question regarding the peculiar and confusing experiences an individual acquires when occupying a particular space as well as the actions they do in a space. Utilizing Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology (2006) as the theoretical anchor for this inquiry, this study explored queer lived experiences through the experiences of disorientation and the queering actions of queer Filipino teachers; specifically, the mechanisms, the experiences, and the outcomes as queer Filipino teachers become challenged by the normativity of distance education, and how they addressed the challenges they experienced from the disorientation. Through interviews with eight (8) self-identified queer DepEd High School teachers from the provinces of Antique and Capiz from ages 24 to 42, this study identified that in the context of distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic, queer Filipino teachers experience disorientation through the challenges brought about by norms in the learning setup that prescribes specific actions, practices and strategies to avoid and to prioritize. As they reflect on their disorienting experiences, the queer Filipino teacher recognizes a need to change their perspective and pedagogies to orient themselves in the space of distance education. This leads them to enact queering actions through a pedagogical performance of going beyond what are obligated and expected of them, as informed by their identities as queer people, as teachers, and as queer teachers.Item Textbook citizenship: The depiction of citizenship in selected social studies high school textbooks in Iloilo CityAlmio. Doni June V. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)A research was conducted to identify the citizenships depicted in selected Social Studies textbooks in Iloilo City and compared it with the citizenships found in Russia in Bulgaria.The method used for the study was qualitative content analysis of sixteen social studies textbooks and key informant interview for the process of textbook making. The most dominant body involved in the textbook making process is the state through its agencies. The schools, may it be public, laboratory, or private are subjected to the guidelines of the Department of Education when it comes to selection of textbooks.The researcher identified four classifications of citizenship that are present in the textbooks that were analyzed: Passive Citizenship, Active Citizenship, National Citizenship, and Religious Citizenship. These classifications of citizenship are dependent on the political culture of each country. By identifying the citizenship depicted in the high school social studies textbooks, it will be evident on how the Philippines wants its citizens to be. This is because of the reason that Philippines used the textbooks as state ideological apparatuses to maintain control over its people. Citizenship training is the best way to do that.Item Socio-economic conditions and LGU responses to urbanization of the municipalities of Leganes, Oton, Pavia, and San Miguel before and after the formation of Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC)Acosta, Mabelle E.; Basister, Wina Irah D. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-03)Urbanization is a process which promotes economic growth and development. On the other hand, it has its corresponding externalities spilled over from the urban areas to the adjacent locales. One of the management strategies used by the local government units (LGUs) in order to address the overwhelming consequences of urbanization is alliance formation. Limited studies were conducted to establish socio-economic contributions of urbanization to the suburban areas. This study aims to describe and compare the socio-economic condition and LGU responses to urbanization of the municipalities of Oton, Leganes, Pavia, and San Miguel before and after the formation of Metro Iloilo-Guimaras Economic Development Council (MIGEDC). The result of the study showed that there is a need for greater collaboration in various areas such as: land use management in accordance to each municipality’s special functional role; water and energy management to foster economies of scale, health services since the pressing problem of air pollution excludes no one; public safety services to establish a functional disaster and crime prevention system; environmental management for sustainable development; infrastructure services for complementary plans and projects; and investment opportunity promotions. Communication and education services need not be further integrated when it comes to managing the externalities of urbanization in Iloilo City.Item The 4ps in Anini-y, Antique: It's implementation and effects in upland communityArbolado, Essa Mae S.; Factuar, Renz Phylis G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This study discusses and analyzes the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), its implementation, and its effects on beneficiaries’ access to basic services (education and health) and economic well-being. A total of 57 4Ps beneficiaries were surveyed, in three barangays in Anino-y, Antique. Survey data were supplemented with key informant interviews and secondary data review. The study shows that the 4Ps enhanced beneficiaries’ access to education and health services. This is manifested by consistent data on school participation and promotion rate of student beneficiaries and by children’s regular visit to health centers to monitor their health conditions. The same can be said for pregnant mothers who benefited from the program. The program was also deemed responsible for improving household conditions of beneficiaries, particularly in terms of enhanced purchasing power as testimonies by the respondents say that they now have the money to purchase basic needs which is food. The 4Ps provide direct benefits to beneficiaries but the process of implementation could have been improved by way of establishing objective and clearer targeting criteria, non-politicization of the process of selection and improving systems for monitoring to ensure compliance to conditionalities. The study suggests the infusion of community-based and participatory principles into the program to enhance local accountability and compliance.Item Factors affecting the choice of elementary school for children among parents in the municipalities of Leganes, Oton and PaviaAraneta, Arlyn G.; Carillo, John Paul Q. (Division of Social Sciences, Bachelor of Science in Economics, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)This paper was designed to identify the factors that significantly affect the choice of elementary school for children among parents in the municipalities of Leganes, Oton, and Pavia. Data were gathered through personal interviews using an interview schedule with 90 study participants with children whose ages ranged from 7-13 years old. There were 30 participants from each municipality. A Logistic Regression Analysis was employed to identify the significant factors. Descriptive analysis showed that the majority of the households have children enrolled in private rather than in public schools (54% vs. 46%). At a 1% level of significance, the model showed that school quality reflected by the computer subject offered by the school, the school distance measured by the travel time going to school, and the school as either parent’s alma mater were significant factors affecting parents' decision for an elementary school for the children.
