Item "When we were young" comparisons and correlates of negative childhood experiencesBravo, Vivian F.; Madero, Patrick Gabriel G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-06)Negative childhood experiences in the forms of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction are potentially traumatic events that have long-lasting impacts on individuals. Previous studies have shown that these experiences are linked to negative health outcomes such as health-risk behaviors, chronic diseases, and negative psychological outcomes. There was a rapid increase in studies that investigate negative childhood experiences worldwide but these were mostly saturated in high socioeconomic status (SES) populations. Several studies were conducted to investigate these experiences in poor countries but these were mostly situated abroad. To date, studies on negative childhood experiences that investigate their link to parental SES, current SES, and health outcomes are scarce in the Philippines. Apart from that, local studies that compare the occurrences of these experiences between different SES are also scant. Addressing these gaps, this study utilized respondents from low and middle SES to understand the link between negative childhood experiences, parental SES, current SES, and health outcomes in adulthood. Using descriptive and correlational methods, this study revealed that there are higher incidences of negative childhood experiences in low-SES compared to middle-SES, suggesting that abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction are more common in low SES and poor communities. Associations between these experiences, parental SES, current SES. and health outcomes are also found. More so, it reveals differing health outcomes in low- and middle-SES. The greater implications of these findings are discussed. The findings of this study support the need for prevention and intervention for negative childhood experiences.Item Perceptions of poverty and life aspirations of children from low-income familiesBordon, Aika Mae G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)This study examined the perceptions of poverty of children from low-income families, their life aspirations and their beliefs of attaining these, and the relationship between these variables. Structured interviews and surveys were conducted among 40 children from low-income families, aged 11-14 years old, from four barangays in Miagao, Iloilo. The findings show that children’s perceptions of poverty are generally based on their experiences of destitution. Respondents have attributed poverty to individualistic and structural factors. Children have valued economic gains, family, and community in their aspirations. Respondents have also placed greater value on intrinsic aspirations. Moreover, they believed that education, employment, positive attitude and reliance on God are pre-requisites in the attainment of aspirations. Children also believed that they are more likely to achieve intrinsic goals than extrinsic ones. Regression analysis revealed that structural causes of poverty predicted their life aspirations. Familial consequences of poverty, together with perceived structural causes, predicted children’s beliefs of attaining their life aspirations.Item Inactivity: A phenomenological study of jobless college graduatesBerador, Joni Mae N. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)The study investigated the reason behind joblessness among college graduates. To provide ample data, four participants consented to participate in the study. Participants were two males and two females. Two participants came from affluent families and two from poor families. For detailed responses, the interview schedule included four topics: (1) infantilization, (2) concept of work, (3) social comparison, and (4) subjective well-being. The interview schedule consisted of open-ended questions and possible probing questions. The responses of the participants were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results show that joblessness of the participants was due to circumstances that prevented them from having stable jobs and which they did not overcome. Evidence of being infantilized was apparent in only one participant. Participants understand the value of hard work, but have different priorities in life. Results show all participants feel inferior when compared to their employed counterparts. AU four participants are not satisfied with their lives, and are aware that a lack of a work domain in their lives contributed to this. Two participants choose to ignore unpleasant feelings about their current situation so they can enjoy their lives more.Item The relationship between the attitude towards women and the evaluation of sexism in liquor advertisements on televisionAzarcon, Criselda Jeremias (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1993-06)This study is on the relationship between the individual's attitude towards women and his/her evaluation of sexism in Tanduay advertisements on television. Using two sets of questionnaires, the study also investigated the relationship between each of these two variables on one hand, and gender, age, and religious affiliation, on the other. Attitude towards women is defined as the level of feminist attitude of an individual. Evaluation of sexism is defined as the individual's rating of sexist manifestations in television liquor advertisements. Sexism is the sexual discrimination against women by people. It is any distinction, exclusion or restriction made against women which has the purpose or effect of denying equal exercise of human rights and fundamental freedom in all fields of human endeavor. A manifestation of this is the sexual degradation of women which is the focus of this study. It is manifested by associating women with sex, or showing women as sex figures, such as showing them as sex partners or in sex-provoking images. The respondents were freshmen dormitory residents at UPV Residence Halls, Miag-ao. An accidental sampling was used to identify the sample population of 30. Using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation the result showed that there is no relationship between attitude towards women and evaluation of sexism in Tanduay advertisement on television. Using the chi square test of independence, it was found that only five out of twenty-one items in the attitude towards women test showed significant differences in the answers of the female and male respondents, four out of twenty-one items showed significant differences in the answers of the religious groups, and one out of twenty-one items showed a significant difference in the answers of the three age groups. Thus, based on the results, attitude towards women does not affect the level of an individual's awareness on how women are sexually degraded in Tanduay advertisement on television.Item Sexual self-scheme and sexual aggrression of male readers of Lad magazineAspero, Maris Pylene P.; Faramiran, Zyreen Lou B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-10)This study was conducted to find out the impact of reading lad magazines on the sexual self-schema and sexual aggression in men. One hundred men of fifty readers and fifty non-readers of lad magazines, from a male dominated institution, 18 to 30 years old served as participants of this study. A survey was conducted and four (4) instruments were used to measure the readership, sexual self-schema, and sexual aggression of men. The design of this study was correlational. To show the relationship between the variables, data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational statistic. The results of this research show that readership of lad magazines is associated with high sexual self-schema in the study sample and the likelihood of being sexually aggressive in comparison to non-readers. Men learned information regarding sex through lad magazines. These magazines also present women in a sexually arousing manner through their pictures and articles. Men's lifestyle was also affected by their readership of lad magazines.Item Personal meanings, experiences, and coping strategies for poverty of women 4P's beneficiariesAcuesta, Princes B. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)This is a phenomenological study which sought to describe the experiences of poverty of women Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries, their personal understanding of poverty, how their membership in 4Ps has affected their experiences of poverty, and their strategies for coping with difficulties associated with poverty. The participants of this study were four women 4Ps beneficiaries residing in Bay-bay Sur, Miagao, Iloilo. An interview guide questionnaire was constructed to gather narratives of poverty experiences from the participants. The results showed that personal meanings of poverty and the experiences of poverty among the participants are generally similar. All of the participants reported that 4Ps lessened their poverty experience in a relative sense. They all believed that daily struggles of inadequacy of basic needs could be fought by hard work. Lastly, all the participants believed that education is the key to their economic mobility and better way of life.
