Item Reality vs. reality: Real life emulating reality TVAlli, Zerlene; Cabarga, Herchelle Anne; Satiagudo, Emme Rose (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-05)The immense influence of reality television has paved the way for the massive success of Big Brother franchise across the globe. Here in the Philippines, Pinoy Big Brother continues to become one of the most popular reality shows. The increasing popularity of PBB to its audience especially the youth prompted the conduct of the study to identify the perceptions on real life resulted from Ilonggo teenagers' exposure to PBB Lucky Season 7. Anchored on George Gerbner's Cultivation Theory, the researchers conducted a survey among Grade 12 Senior High School students in the First Congressional District of Iloilo. The researchers utilized the gualitative and guantitative method in data collection and analysis. The overall mean score reflected a positive perception, thereby, the researchers have concluded that reality TV viewing has a positive effect on the perception of Ilonggo teenagers towards real life. The positive perceptions revealed that regardless of being light viewers, respondents’ exposure to PBB Lucky Season 7 bears effect in influencing their perception on real life. Hence, it presents a different light on Gerbner's Cultivation Theory, which states that television's immense influence is mirrored on the heavy viewers. The reality cultivated by reality shows like Pinoy Big Brother is a manifestation of the strength of the television as a medium and as a powerful tool that can shape the minds and the society.Item Lived experiences of parole and probation officers in a highly urbanized areaAcosta, Kathleen Eunice E.; Sanchez, Carl Andre M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)The Parole and Probation Administration (PPA) operates under the banner “Redeeming Lives, Restoring Relationships” through the various programs that aid offenders in their return back to society. At the core of these programs are the Parole and Probation Officers (PPOs) whose task is to administer these programs and assess whether or not these offenders are ready to be reintegrated back into society. This study focused on the lived experiences of the PPOs in a highly urbanized area. Specifically, it looked into their experiences while implementing the programs, the challenges they faced while implementing the programs, and their interaction with their clients. Phenomenological approach was used to analyze, discuss, and provide a methodological framework for the study. Five PPOs coming from a highly urbanized area were interviewed for this study. The interviews revealed that the overall success of the programs under the PPA is highly reliant on the collaboration of society with the PPOs in helping the offender re-enter society. The study also identified the lack of funding, and the highly bureaucratic processes within the PPA as the largest area of concern among PPOs. That is, as a result of this bureaucratic nature of the PPA, it translates to lesser manpower in addressing the high number of cases that the PPOs cater to. The participants shared that because of the lack of manpower and the influx of cases they handle they are unable to effectively and efficiently perform their task as mandated by law. This study recommends that further research should look into the impacts of the plea-bargaining policy towards the justice system and how the roles of PPOs are affected by it. Furthermore, research geared towards the current programs currently being implemented by the PPA is suggested by this study. Lastly, the national government should reassess its hiring practices and re-evaluate budget allocations for the PPA given that it is severely understaffed while the workload has been consistently increasing.Item When parents are absent: A study on the role of grandmothers in child rearingArguelles, Lorilyn J. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines, 2016-05)This study examined the role of the grandmothers in a caregiving role. Role theory was used as a framework to guide this qualitative study. Four grandmothers who provided care for their grandchildren were interviewed. The result showed that grandmothers’ role had shifted from a traditional role to a grandmother caregiver role. As a consequence, grandmothers experienced stress, challenges, on-time or off-time role, life changes, and at the same time positive experiences. They experienced stress, challenges, and difficulties due to the role timing and role strain which hindered them to perform their role successfully. This research also showed that grandmothers, despite their old age, play a major role in child rearing especially when the parents of the children were absent.
