Economic cost of dengue fever treatment in Miagao, Iloilo
Banehit, Gracesel Faith D.; Napulan, Macie Carlyn A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)
Dengue, the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral infection in the world, has caused many deaths in the Philippines. The municipality of Miagao, Iloilo Province, has recorded a high number of dengue cases in recent years. This study determined the economic cost of dengue fever treatment among affected households and patients with dengue in 2016 in Miagao. The study used a cross-sectional data collected from 169 interviews with the study participants for 201 dengue patients from 62 barangays in Miagao in February to April 2017. The study identified, measured, and valued the various costs related to dengue fever treatment. Results showed that the total economic cost for home-treated patients averaged at Pl2,522.08 for both the patient and the caregiver (household), with the following breakdown: P5,068.82 for monetary costs (direct medical and non-medical costs) and P7,453.26 as opportunity cost. For those who were admitted in the hospital, the total economic cost averaged at P22,213.31 with the following breakdown: P9,504.77 for monetary costs and P12,708.54 for opportunity cost. As expected, patients treated at home had lower costs both in monetary and nonmonetary aspects compared to those confined in the hospital. Although the majority of the study participants are knowledgeable about dengue, it is still necessary to increase their awareness of dengue prevention in order to prevent dengue treatment costs for the households. The local government must also strengthen the implementation of its existing dengue prevention policies and programs to mobilize cooperation and involvement of the people in dengue prevention.

Implementation of marine-protected area in San Jose, Antique: A social analysis
Azucena, Jessa Veeh B.; Moreno, Rosano Carlo P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)
This study was designed to evaluate the marine protected area (MPA) implementation in San Jose, Antique using socio-economic and governance indicators. Data were gathered through personal interview of fishers using an interview schedule and focus group discussion (FGD) with selected participants from the municipal government and barangays. A total of 125 fishers were chosen from the four barangays affected by the MPA, namely: Brgy. 3, Brgy. 4, Brgy. Madrangca and Brgy. Funda Dalipe through systematic random sampling. The results showed that the presence of the MPA have not made a significant change in the income of the fishers. Fishers believed that fish abundance and fish catch is relatively higher in 2003 compared to the present. Marine resources are highly valuable to the fishers since it is their source of income (64%) and food (33%). They also believed that the resources are already depleted (51%) due to uncontrolled fishing (28%). In addition, the management plan was not followed. There was no specific budget intended for MPA. There was a low degree of participation and stakeholder empowerment. Also, it was observed that though most (91%) of the fishers were aware of the MPA, there was less involvement in MPA activities, particularly of the fishers from Brgy Madrangca, Brgy 3, and Brgy. 4. To improve the MPA management in the area, there should be provision of income diversification program in the coastal barangays, proper information dissemination, a specific budget intended for the MPA and involvement of all the affected barangays.

Willingness to pay for the barangay loudspeaker system as an early warning device among the residents of Sebaste, Antique
Alonzo, Dumcel Kay J.; Bangero, Denevieve Y. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)
The municipality of Sebaste in Antique Province is along the path of strong typhoons that can cause damage to lives and properties. The likely effects of these typhoons and other natural or man-made disasters can be mitigated by prompt information dissemination and early warning devices. Correct information and warnings that reach people at the right time can help them prepare for the impending disaster and avoid its likely effects. In Sebaste, there is no community-wide early warning system. This study focused on the value placed by the local residents of Sebaste, Antique for the establishment of an early warning device in the form of the Barangay Loud Speaker System (BLS) by estimating their willingness-to-pay (WTP) using Contingent Valuation Method. A total of 320 study participants representing their households, equally distributed in eight barangays of Sebaste, Antique were interviewed in January to March 2017 using a pilot-tested interview schedule. Seventy-five percent of the study participants were willing to pay for the BLS. The binary logit regression showed that bid price was the only factor that significantly (and negatively) affects WTP at 1% level of significance. The estimated monthly mean WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were P68.00 and P60.75, respectively. The monthly Social WTP with and without adjustment for the level of certainty were Pl84,084.16 and Pl62,293.63, respectively. This study recommends that the local government of Sebaste should invest in the establishment of the BLS in each of 10 barangays of the municipality.

Factors affecting the choice of elementary school for children among parents in the municipalities of Leganes, Oton and Pavia
Araneta, Arlyn G.; Carillo, John Paul Q. (Division of Social Sciences, Bachelor of Science in Economics, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)
This paper was designed to identify the factors that significantly affect the choice of elementary school for children among parents in the municipalities of Leganes, Oton, and Pavia. Data were gathered through personal interviews using an interview schedule with 90 study participants with children whose ages ranged from 7-13 years old. There were 30 participants from each municipality. A Logistic Regression Analysis was employed to identify the significant factors. Descriptive analysis showed that the majority of the households have children enrolled in private rather than in public schools (54% vs. 46%). At a 1% level of significance, the model showed that school quality reflected by the computer subject offered by the school, the school distance measured by the travel time going to school, and the school as either parent’s alma mater were significant factors affecting parents' decision for an elementary school for the children.
