(Division of Humanties, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Philippines, the Department of Education implemented distance learning which is primarily module-based to accommodate those that do not have the resources. However, literature has shown that teachers still use emerging media in order to communicate with their students. This study aimed to find out the constraints and challenges experienced when using emerging media during distance learning. It was guided by the social presence theory which centers on the differences in the degree of social presence using telecommunications media and how these differences affect the communication in terms of constraints and challenges. Using quantitative research design and a descriptive survey method, public junior high school teachers were given survey questionnaires to report their experiences on the use of emerging media. The results of this study revealed that emerging media plays a significant role despite distance learning being modulebased. The challenges are caused by the digital divide that led to the lack of budget and technological infrastructure while constraints are more concerned with the intimacy and immediacy depending on where the type of emerging media falls on the social presence scale. Overall, the challenges and constraints encountered by the respondents in using emerging media affects the communication and by extension, the teaching and learning experience in distance learning.Item Social responsibility on the use of media technologyBeloya, Marian Kristina C.; Camancho, Rea Micah C.; Perez, Mary Lydannie V.; Villanueva, Ma. Veronica D.; Sinda, Krisha Kamille M. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)This thesis is a critical analysis of the factors that makes K-Pop music popular. The researchers wanted to objectively look at the music genre since there are only few studies of K-Pop despite its growing global attention in the entertainment industry. The study first traced the emergence of K-Pop, followed by the discussion of its packaging and promotion strategies as well as its implications on Philippine local music industry. The study used Commodification of Culture by Hannah Arendt and Theodore Adorno (1973) and the assumptions of Transnational Media Management Theory by Barbara Parker (1996). The proponents interviewed experts: 3 from the academe, 2 from the media organizations, 2 from the music industry and 2 representatives from K-Pop fan groups and with the Director of Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines. The proponents also did library and online research. The study found out that K-Pop started mainly from K-Dramas and that a combination of well-produced music and music videos, packaging and promotion strategies of Korean entertainment companies, both government and private sector efforts as well as the good adaptation to advance technologies have made K-Pop a global success.Item The degree of potency of emojis to substitute the written language in Facebook MessengerBechayda, Kristelle Mae S.; Jaruda, Ma. Ella Dean R.; Pavillar, Gliza Mae D. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2018-04)This is an undergraduate study of how potent the emojis are in substituting the written language in Facebook Messenger. Purposive sampling was used in determining the 127 respondents in Iloilo National High School. Survey questionnaires were utilized in gathering the data. By using Kincaid's Convergence Model of Communication, Semiotics Theory and Uses and Gratification Theory, the researchers used descriptive method to analyze the potency of emojis by studying the respondent’s mutual understanding on their use of emojis. Mutual understanding is further determined by getting the individual field of experience of each respondent. The field of experience in this study includes the level of knowledge on the use of emojis, commonly used emojis, reasons why they use emojis and the capability of emojis in conveying messages. The findings of the study showed that emojis are highly potent in substituting the written language in Facebook Messenger.Item Critical analysis of local newspapers' designBarbon, Krisna C.; Macahilo, September Noon A. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)The study, "Critical Analysis of Local Newspaper Design", gives the idea of how local newspapers in Iloilo are designed through evaluation of the four elements of design namely headline, text, photo, cutline and the over-all layout of the front page. The duration for the evaluation occurred for a span of four weeks. The subjects for the study were the seven newspapers found in Iloilo City. As a result of the evaluation, it has been found out that in headline layouting, all seven newspapers failed to be consistent in following the line-column formula and the 5-10 words headline guideline. In text layouting, the common problems are the measurements of the legs of columns and jump stories. For photos found in the front page, most of them do not have borders and with excessive use of photo cliches. The photos all look natural but do not suggest actions. For cutline, not all newspapers observed proper placement which should be outside the photo. For the overall layout, majority of the newspapers have balance. The researchers observed that there is a need to improve the front page layout of local newspapers in Iloilo City.Item The classification and regulation of AM Radio programsBalagosa, Sheena Marie K. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)The study "The Classification and Regulation of AM Radio Programs" provides us the reasons why there is a need to classify and reinforce regulation on AM radio programs based on the MTRCB guidelines, the KBP Code, and the opinion of Ilonggo radio listeners and broadcast practitioners. The study covered 12 barangays with 400 respondents and eight broadcast practitioners from four AM radio stations in Iloilo City. From the results of the study, we have found out that radio stations created program innovations that affected the listeners. There is a need to put classification in order to separate sensitive topics that are not suitable for all listeners, to protect children by knowing which programs they can listen to, to avoid hearing double meaning words, extremely violent stories and sensitive topics about sex. There is a need to reinforce regulation because of the failure to adhere to broadcast standards of some radio programs, KBP's leniency in the implementation of its rules and regulation and the effectiveness of self-regulation. Thus, we have the determined that there is a need to put classification and to reinforce regulation in AM radio programs to protect the moral values of Filipino radio listeners.Item Status of digital filmmaking in the PhilippinesAyuste, Ira Sheena C.; Guda, John Mark P.; Noveros, John Trexy N. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-10)The Philippines was once considered to be one of the most prolific filmmakers in Asia, second to Bollywood of India. However, through the years, the Philippine Film Industry suffered a decline in number of film productions. With the advancement of technology, independent Filipino filmmakers started to work on digital films. The year 2005 is considered to be the peak of digital filmmaking in the country. Numerous independent digital films were produced and some wore given international recognition and awards. Since digital imaging technology naturally pixelize when images are enlarged, as in exhibition in theaters, and a rather low image projection compared to commercial film which has a finer texture , it can be resorted for low-cost production of digital films. Since it has a low-budget, it doesn't star famous actors and actresses. It has also high risks of piracy since digital format can easily be copied. However, digital films' strongest- components are its relevant societal themes and storyline and new film treatment and creative freedom. It's usually being directed by new, young directors who have fresh ideas and insights, which sometimes, even the most sensitive subjects are being tackled. It primarily targets and develops a new set of audience, who basically belong to today's generation as digital filmmakers claimed to be the voice of the new generation on how they see life, the society and the world. Promotion is the main problem of digital producers. It doesn't have enough funding to have its film promoted on TV and print. However with the continuous struggle to educate the viewing public, with the help of different sectors, digital filmmaking has the potential to compete with commercial films in terms of volume of viewer ship, eventually contributing to the increase of film production in the Philippine Film Industry.Item A survey on the educational qualifications of AM radio broadcasters in Iloilo CityArmada, Cornelio Jude C.; Braquis, Kristian Peace Alegria (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-11)This study "A Survey on the Educational Qualifications of AM Radio Broadcaster in Iloilo" aims to (1) identify the educational qualifications of AM Radio Broadcasters in Iloilo City; (2) determine the number AM Radio Broadcasters in Iloilo City earned a degree in Mass Communications/Broadcasting and other communication-related courses; (3) and identify the qualifications considered by AM Radio Stations in hiring broadcast practitioners. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)This descriptive study was conducted to ascertain the text and context of the songs of Gloc9 from 2003-2012. Forty (40) songs with societal issues were determined, classified to which presidential term (Arroyo's or Aquino's) they were released and analyzed if they reflect the real Philippine setting at the given period. The results showed that many of the songs of Gloc9 did not exactly reflect the real-life setting of Filipinos under the two presidential eras they belonged thus as a medium, the songs created a Constructed Mediated Reality. However, songs that mentioned issues such as poverty, unemployment, abuse of power and drug abuse were reflective of period they were written. Nevertheless, rap song is a good medium not only for entertainment but also for information. It is one of the most effective medium to bring awareness to the public by presenting relevant societal issues in a rap music format. To further improve this study, future researchers should do a triangulated research method.
