Item Locus of control of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers: Its relation to their academic adjustmentBataan, Arminda A.; Losare, Anna Marie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study sought to determine the kind of locus of control of the respondents and the level of academic adjustment as seen in their grade point averages. The researchers aimed to find out if there exists a relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. This study was patterned on a previous research on the relationship between the same variables but this study utilized a different instrument and respondents came from Iloilo province. Fifteen (15) college students whose fathers were imprisoned at the time that they were enrolled served as respondents of the study. All respondents came from Iloilo, 33% of which are from Iloilo City and the remaining 67% are from the municipalities. Their ages range from 17-24. Respondents were selected using the snowball method. Respondents were asked to answer the Trice Academic Locus of Control Scale. The scale is composed of 28 items answerable by true or false determined the kind of locus of control of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. In addition, the respondents were asked to submit their copy of grades of the previous semester to determine how well they adjust academically. The computed Pearson Product Moment Correlation is r=0.26 with a rcrit=0.441 at 0.05 alpha. This signifies that indeed there is a significant relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. However, it revealed a weak positive correlation between locus of control and academic adjustment. The findings imply that locus of control is not the sole cause or factor for academic adjustment. The cause or source of a well-adjusted academic performance of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers may therefore be attributed to other factors such as economic and social support coming from family and friends. Such factors could even lead to a poor academic performance. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)Retirement poses significant changes in the lives of the old age population. Along with this are changes in social networks, activities and life outcomes. To examine perceived stress, social support, coping strategies and psychological well-being among retired teachers in Tigbauan, Iloilo, qualitative and quantitative measures were conducted to 41 retired teachers. In general, retired teachers perceive low levels of stress. Factors that contribute to perceived stress are health conditions, financial concerns, family problems and current activities. Social support, which is provided primarily by family and friends, is experienced in high levels. In terms of coping, emotion-focused coping is engaged in by the majority. The leading specific coping strategy they employ is praying or going to church. The majority experience positive levels of psychological well-being, which can be predicted using the variable of social support, as revealed by regression analysis.Item Disorientation and queering action in distance education: The queer lived experiences of the queer Filipino teacherBalensoy, Timoteo C., III (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-05)Queer studies highlight that beyond the idea of gender and sexuality, queerness branches through a vast field of disciplines and focus, urging scholarly interest towards the queer phenomenological question regarding the peculiar and confusing experiences an individual acquires when occupying a particular space as well as the actions they do in a space. Utilizing Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology (2006) as the theoretical anchor for this inquiry, this study explored queer lived experiences through the experiences of disorientation and the queering actions of queer Filipino teachers; specifically, the mechanisms, the experiences, and the outcomes as queer Filipino teachers become challenged by the normativity of distance education, and how they addressed the challenges they experienced from the disorientation. Through interviews with eight (8) self-identified queer DepEd High School teachers from the provinces of Antique and Capiz from ages 24 to 42, this study identified that in the context of distance education during the COVID-19 pandemic, queer Filipino teachers experience disorientation through the challenges brought about by norms in the learning setup that prescribes specific actions, practices and strategies to avoid and to prioritize. As they reflect on their disorienting experiences, the queer Filipino teacher recognizes a need to change their perspective and pedagogies to orient themselves in the space of distance education. This leads them to enact queering actions through a pedagogical performance of going beyond what are obligated and expected of them, as informed by their identities as queer people, as teachers, and as queer teachers.Item Project EDI WAM!: Everybody Do It: War Against Malnutrition in Brgy. Roma, San Joaquin, IloiloBalogo, Philip G.; Bomediano, Maria Jonnah R.; Esparagoza, Marevi T.; Gallo, Czareena Anne; Mallari , Maria Katerina; Murillo, Gilbert Guy D.; Ortono, Jevi Marie P.; Oteda, Kristine Joy D.; Pameroyan, Nesly Joy G.; Radones, Charmaine Mae Keyien G.; Santocildes, Camille S.; Tirador, Anna Katharina L. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)The Millenium Development Goals for the Philippines by 2015 is to reduce the underweight-by-age prevalence to 17.2% among 0-5 years old children. So far in 2013, the prevalence decreased from 20.7% in 2003 to 19.9%. Western Visayas ranks second (26.0%) in the most malnourished regions in the country, with trends increasing in Iloilo from 25.1% in 2008 to 27.4% in 2013. According to the National Nutrition Council, this small change in number for the past 10 years makes it unlikely that the country will achieve its MDG. Project EDI WAM! Every body Do It: War Against Malnutrition in Barangay Roma, San Joaquin, Iloilo aims to decrease the prevalence of malnutrition by 70% among children aged 24 to 72 months. Operation Timbang showed that out of the 42 children, 11 were identified as malnourished, giving a prevalence of 26.19%. Project EDI WAM! aims to decrease the number of undernourished children through health education, feeding, and supplementation programs. A functional core group of 9 members was formed and was later transformed into a Barangay Health Board. Cooking lessons dubbed Pinoy Mother Chef improved the mothers' food preparation practices and behavior. Hygiene and Sanitation increased by 36.60%, while proper meal planning increased by 24.83%. Ready-to-Use therapeutic food (RUTF) was prepared and supplemented to the children. Knowledge of mothers on health and nutrition also increased by 35.54%. Out of the 11 malnourished children, 4 were turned to normal, giving a decrease of 36.36%. The 70% goals was not achieved and may be attributed to the short period of time that the project was implemented. However there is a significant increase in weight among all the recipients (2.79% ) and malnourished (4.92%). A Mothers’ Association was established to continue the project advocacy, making the cooking and feeding program an annual event.Item The effect of playing violent video games and gender on aggression among first year students in Iloilo National High SchoolBalicanta, Alexander John F.; Cacho, Charlotte J. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)The study was conducted to determine the effects of playing violent video games and gender on aggression among first-year high school students. The experimental design utilized two treatment groups and two control groups. The four groups consisted of (1) males who played the violent videogame; (2) females who played the violent videogame; (3) males who played the nonviolent videogame; and (4) females who played the nonviolent videogame. In this study, aggression was measured using the Direct and Indirect Aggression Scales (DIAS). The DIAS consists of 24 items that measure physical, verbal, and indirect aggression. Prior to the administration of the DIAS, the participants were first asked to play video games. Two groups were assigned to play a violent video game, and the other two groups played a nonviolent game. The participants’ scores in the DIAS were computed and analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with interaction. This is done to show if the variables type of video game played and gender significantly affect aggression among adolescents. The two-way ANOVA with interaction yielded three computed values of F. Results show that there is a significant F-ratio on the variable type of video game played. The obtained F is 5.45, and an F of 4.26 is required at the 0.05 level with 1 and 27 df. Since 5.45 is greater than 4.26, the null hypothesis is rejected. Thus, the conclusion is that the type of video game played has a significant effect on aggression among first-year high school students. However, the F-ratio derived for the variable gender was not significant. The obtained F is 3.59, and an F of 4.26 is required at the 0.05 level with 1 and 27 df. Since the value of F is less than 4.26, the null hypothesis on gender is accepted. Thus, gender has no significant effect on aggression among first-year high school students. The F ratio derived for the interaction of the two variables is also not significant. The computed value of F., which is only 0.297, is less than 4.26. The null hypothesis, thus, is rejected. This leads to the conclusion that the type of videogame played and gender do not interact to affect aggression.Item Students’ conceptions of learning and learning styles and teachers’ conceptions of teaching and teaching stylesAlegario, Sharon S.; Palec, Rhea Q. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-03)This study aimed to identify the relationship that exists between students' conceptions of learning and their learning styles, teachers' conceptions of teaching and their teaching styles and students' learning styles and teachers' teaching styles. Respondents of the study were three (3) Communication 11 teachers, three (3) Mathematics 14 teachers and twenty of their respective students. It was conducted last February 7 to 18, 2000, AY 1999-2000 at the CAS Bldg. using a survey. There were two sets of questionnaire, one for the students and one for the teachers. The first set included the Conceptions of Learning Questionnaire and the Learning Style Inventory using a five-point scale and the second set included the Conceptions of Teaching Questionnaire and the Teaching Style Inventory. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to determine the relationship that exists between students' conceptions of learning and their learning styles and the students' learning styles and their teachers' teaching styles. While the Spearman Rank-Order Correlation was used to determine the relationship that exists between teachers' conceptions of teaching and their teaching styles. Results of the study indicated that there is a positive relationship between students' conception of teaching as a complex process and their teaching style of an expert. The study also showed that there is a positive relationship between students' conceptions of learning as increasing one's knowledge and their active experimentation learning style. There is also a positive relationship between teachers' expert teaching style and their students' active experimentation learning style. It is recommended that future researchers would look into other different learning styles and teaching styles that match, which will result to an improved learning environment and a higher academic achievement.Item Some psychosocial factors in adolescents' acceptance of sexual mythsAgrasada, Frotzi Ann B.; Sagge, Stacey Marie N. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study investigated the relationships of psychosocial factors namely: family openness in communication, religiosity, attitude towards sex, and sexuality education with adolescents’ acceptance of sexual myths. One hundred (100) first year college students composed of 50 males and 50 females from a public school completed a series of survey instruments designed to measure the variables under investigation. Design of the study was correlational. To show relationships between variables, data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational statistic. Statistical analyses showed support for the relationship between religiosity and acceptance of sexual myths, that is, the higher the religiosity, the more is acceptance of sexual myths. The study also found support for the relationship between attitude towards sex and acceptance of sexual myths, that is, the more conservative is attitude towards sex the more is acceptance of sexual myths. However this result was obtained for male respondents only. The expected relationships for acceptance of sexual myths and the other variables were not supported in this study.Item The 4ps in Anini-y, Antique: It's implementation and effects in upland communityArbolado, Essa Mae S.; Factuar, Renz Phylis G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)This study discusses and analyzes the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), its implementation, and its effects on beneficiaries’ access to basic services (education and health) and economic well-being. A total of 57 4Ps beneficiaries were surveyed, in three barangays in Anino-y, Antique. Survey data were supplemented with key informant interviews and secondary data review. The study shows that the 4Ps enhanced beneficiaries’ access to education and health services. This is manifested by consistent data on school participation and promotion rate of student beneficiaries and by children’s regular visit to health centers to monitor their health conditions. The same can be said for pregnant mothers who benefited from the program. The program was also deemed responsible for improving household conditions of beneficiaries, particularly in terms of enhanced purchasing power as testimonies by the respondents say that they now have the money to purchase basic needs which is food. The 4Ps provide direct benefits to beneficiaries but the process of implementation could have been improved by way of establishing objective and clearer targeting criteria, non-politicization of the process of selection and improving systems for monitoring to ensure compliance to conditionalities. The study suggests the infusion of community-based and participatory principles into the program to enhance local accountability and compliance.
