Item Tempe production from pigeon PEA (Cajanus cajan)Abadesco, Lilibeth A. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1992-04)ABSTRACT Tempe, a mold-fermented product, was made using the traditional method of making soybean tempe, utilizing pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) as substrate for the Rhizopus mold. Pigeon pea seeds were inoculated with Rhizopus oligosporus and was incubated at 30°C. Fungal growth was completed after 48 hours, producing a compact cake knitted by white mold mycelium with a dough-like aroma. Tempe Bacam and Tempe Goren, both prepared from soybean tempe and pigeon pea tempe were subjected to sensory evaluation by eleven panelists to compare pigeon pea tempe with soybean tempe. They were compared based on their appearance, flavor, and general acceptability. Based on the sensory evaluation, differences exist between soybean tempe and pigeon pea tempe. However, analysis of variance and F-test showed that the difference was not significant at 5 per cent level except in color of Tempe Bacam samples. Organoleptic characteristics favored soybean tempe over pigeon pea tempe.Item Economic analysis of rice farming under differential tenurial arrangements in Sibalom, AntiqueBasañes, Lorvi Ann A.; Rondrique, Clyde G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1997-03)This study was undertaken in order to acquire informations about the effects of tenurial arrangments on the productivity and profitability of rice farms in Sibalom, Antique, from the operators view point. The study found out that the practices of rice farms did not essentially vary among farms of different tenure arrangements, though some slight differences had been discovered. Furthermore, it was also discovered that tenurial arrangement greatly affected the distribution of gains from farming. Though share-tenanted farms proved to be the most profitable from the operators point of view, the conpensation that the operators received were quite inadequate to compensate the cost in using owned inputs. Moreover, other tenurial arrangements, leasehold and owner-operated, revealed to be less profitable than the one mentioned earlier. In terms of its effect on productivity, tenurial arrangements were found to explain an insignificant variation in the farms output. The study concluded that tenurial arrangements did really have a significant effect on productivity and the production practices of rice farmers, though in the profitability side, it proved to be otherwise. Of the problems presented, the emergence of rats and the golden kuhol pestilence in the rice fields were pointed out as the primary reasons for the decline in the productivity of rice farms in Sibalom, Antique. Aside from the propagation of government support programs and the transformation and empowerment of rice farmer cooperatives, the study also recommended that a closer look on share-tenancy must be done by the goverment so as to eliminate its equity undesirability, instead of outlawing the said tenurial arrangement which proved, in this study, to be the most efficient tenurial arrangement in rice farming.Item The multiplicity of jobs of the urban-poor breadwinning fathers in Iloilo CityArdales, Feb Grace L.; Yudelmo, Ma. Leah E. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03)The worsening socio-economic condition of the society serve as a reason why the urban-poor breadwinning fathers are engaging in the multiplicity of jobs. It is treated by the breadwinning fathers as a means for them in satisfying the basic needs of the family. It is also necessary to consider proper time management to avoid overlapping of activities and time constraints. The study of the multiplicity of jobs of the urban-poor breadwinning fathers in Iloilo City revolves in the description of the socio-economic condition of the families of the urban-poor breadwinning fathers who have multiple jobs in Iloilo City. It is also concern in determining the different kinds of jobs these urban-poor breadwinning fathers are engaged in as well as the reasons why they engage in such multiplicity of jobs. Finally, the last that is very necessary is the analysis of how they manage their time in each of their jobs and their personal activities.Item Costs and returns analysis of municipal hook and line fisheries in selected coastal barangays of Hamtic, AntiqueBaldevia, Joan R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03)This paper aims to determine the social and economic conditions of municipal hook and line fishermen; the cost structure of the hook and line fishing method; the profitability level of the municipal hook and line fishermen; the sharing system employed in the municipal hook and line fishery; and to identify the problems of the municipal hook and line fishermen. The study utilized the cost and return analysis. The limitation of this kind of analysis is the assumption that changes in effort and adjustment in fish stocks are taking place simultaneously. The percentage and average analysis failed to take full consideration of the time element of the study since it was based at a "one-shot" interview. The locale of the study are the selected coastal barangays of Hamtic, Antique namely Brgy. Caridad, Mapatag and Asluman. Any conclusions in this study is only applicable to the area concerned by this fishing gear and does not apply to other fishing grounds. Findings of the study showed that the average income of the municipal household was PhP 4168 which was below the average monthly income in Region VI which was PhP 5339.8. They can not be considered absolutely poor however because their average monthly income was still higher to the regional poverty threshold which was PhP 8197/year. Food was the biggest cost outlay of the municipal household which accounted for 68% of the total household expenses. In terms of cost structure, variable cost accounted for 84% of the total cost per trip. This showed that in every fishing trip, the fishermen needs to have enough money to cover its operating expenses. The small percentage of the total fixed cost relative to the total cost shows the level of mobility of the fishing unit to move to another gear type or even to another market of the fishing industry. Labor cost accounted for 48% to total cost per trip which showed how labor intensive is the hook and line fishing method. The opportunity cost, on the other hand, accounted for 13% of the total cost per trip. Almost all indices of profitability posted a negative values. This negative economic profit indicate a definite evidence of economic overfishing. It also indicate that the fishermen should seriously rethink their position in the fishing industry. The differences in findings of the study among the three sample barangays can be attributed to three important variables. First, is the average hour/trip and the average trip/per week. Since this is a per trip analysis, this had an implication on all variables. Secondly, is the number of motorized boats per barangay. Motorized boats have a higher depreciation cost, opportunity cost of owned capital and running cost. Third, would be the number of boats with crewmen/operators per barangay. This reflect the percentage of the respondents with a sharing system and this would entail a higher labor cost and consequently to total cost per barangay. The sharing system was flexible as evidenced by the different sharing arrangement between Brgy. Mapatag which had a 50-50 sharing arrangement compared to Brgy. Asluman and Caridad which was 60-40. The primary problem of the municipal fishermen was the presence of big fishing vessels like the baby purse seiner. Other problems mentioned were the illegal fishing operations like trawling which operate during the night, lack of capital for repair and maintenance and bad weather conditions. The improvement of the socioeconomic conditions of the fishermen should call for a general improvement of the environment in which they operate. The recommendations of the study asserts that the government should develop additional employment opportunities outside the fishery sector. Fishing effort should be controlled by regulation of entry in terms of number of boats or gears employed because of economic overfishing. Large scale fishing like the baby purse seiner should be regulated and trawling be effectively prohibited to increase the resource base of the small-scale fishery. A clear boundary line should then be put up to avoid encroachment of the big fishing vessels to the municipal waters.Item Analysis of credit card demand of UPV Faculty membersBene, Ivanhoe C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03)This research is an economic analysis of the demand for credit cards of UPV faculty members. Specifically, the research was undertaken to: describe the social and economic characteristics of existing and potential credit cardholders; estimate the credit card demand of UPV faculty and determine the significant factors affecting the demand. Logistic regression was utilized since the research is composed of a binary dependent variable which is the willingness to acquire a credit card. Results of the study revealed that 40 percent of the sampled UPV faculty members were instructors who belong to age bracket 21-28 years old. In general, the average age of a UPV faculty was 38 years old with average annual personal gross income of PhP230,000. On the other hand, 18 percent of the respondents were willing to acquire a credit card while 19 percent were credit cardholders. Deferred payment was the most common feature being used by existing cardholders while traveling was the most frequent activity in which credit card was commonly used. On the average, an existing cardholder used his/her card twice a month with an average of PhP3,530 amount of credit availed during the month and paid an average monthly finance charge of 3.25 percent. SAS output showed that; merchant acceptability, convenience and income were the significant factors affecting the demand.Item Effects of commercial fishing operation on the municipality fisherfolks of Miag-ao, IloiloBianet, Hector C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-04)This is a study about the effects of commercial fishing operation on the municipal fisherfolks of Miagao, Iloilo, which focuses particularly on the social and economic aspects. This is a descriptive study which aims to describe the fishing technology, the social and economic characteristics, then determine the socio-economic efifects of commercial fishing operation on the municipal fisherfolks of Miagao, Iloilo. Interview of key respondents and archival research were conducted to obtain data and related information about the topic. The results of the study show that in the social aspect, operation of commercial fishing has no siginificant effect on the municipal fishefolks. In the economic aspect , however, the operation of commercial fishing has brought about a tremendous effects on the municipal fisherfolks’ catch. A reduce in the quantity and quality, in particular.Item Comparative rural income distribution analysis for Brgy. Punong, Passi City and Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan, 1997Balane, Walter I.; Montemor, Ma. Reina G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-03)This study was conducted in Brgy. Punong, Passi City and Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan. There were twenty four (24) respondents from Brgy. Punong, Passi City and fourty one (41) from Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan. The analytical tools include the Income Decile, Gini-Coefficient and the Lorenz Curve. It was found out that income earners belonging to deciles in Brgy. Punong, Passi City earn only 24.55% of the total annual household income earned for Brgy. Punong. While the upper deciles (6-10) earn 75.45% of the said income. On the other hand, the income earners belonging to deciles 1-5 in Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan earns 29.93% of the total annual household income earned for Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan. While the upper deciles earn 70.07% of the said income. It was observed that the income earners in the 10th decile earns 1,200% more than the income earners in the first decile in Brgy. Punong, Passi City. On the other hand, the income earners in the 10th decile earns 506% greater than the income earners in the 1st decile income earners in Region VI and Philippines earns 2.2% and 1.7% respectively. In Brgy. Punong, Passi City and Tubod, Binagawan they earn 2.3% and 4.5% of the total annual household income. The bigger percentage share the income earned by 1st decile income earners in Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan is indicative of the barangays' greater advantage vis-a-vis income distribution equality compared to that of Brgy. Punong, Passi City. It was found out that Passi City is Iloilo's highest income earner municipality. The income distribution in Brgy. Punong Grande, Passi City does not however show that high municipality income assures income equality distribution. The Gini-Coefficient ratios further justifies the indirect relationship of high municipal income earned and and income distribution equality. The Gini-ratio of Brgy. Punong, Passi City is 0.3694 while that of Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan is 0.3313. Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan's estimate indicates a greater income distribution equality compared to that of Brgy. Punong, Passi City. Consequently, in the plotting of the Lorenz Curve, the curve for Brgy. Punong, Passi City is farther form the line of perfect equality compared to the one of Brgy. Tubod, Bingawan. The Gini-ratios of the Philippines and Western Visayas in 1997 were 0.4960 and 0.4414 respectively, which are relatively higher than the estimates of the two barangays. This is believed to be caused by sectoral homogeneity, which propose the concept that in areas where there is lack of mobility in the primary source of income, households heads are given less choice to move to another sector. Since both barangays are categorized as rural, although they differ in their extent of dependence to agriculture, the populace were deprived of the choices prided to those in urban areas. Thus, there is poor variety as to sources of income, household head and therefore income itself. Using the logarithmic transformed multiple regression, the following factors were found to be affecting significantly, the distribution of annual household income in Brgy. Punong, Passi City, the number of nonhousehold member contributors (NHM) and the primary sources of income from proffesional work (PSY-PROF). For Brgy. Tubod,Bingawan, three variables resulted to be significant in affecting household income distribution namely; the number of non-household member contributor (NHM), primary sources of income from contributors (PSY-COMP) and highest educational attainment- college level (EDUC-CD). Based on the results particularly on the decile income differentials and factors affecting income differentials, it is recommended that both national and local government should give focus on economic development and not only on economic growth so that vital problems will be addressed. It is important that the government will focus on its Poverty Eradication Program on the welfare of the smallest of the Philippine barangays. It is due time to initiate and maintain community based development projects and other barangay support system to empower the building blocks of the Philippine societyItem Socio-economic analysis of municipal fishing in selected barangays of Banate, IloiloBayani, Marie Joy G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-03)The main objectives of the study were to determine the social and economic characteristics of municipal fishermen, costs structure, profitability level, and problems encountered by municipal fishermen in Banate Iloilo. The study made used of cost and return analysis to determine the economic condition of the respondents. This study covered the municipal fishermen of selected barangays of Banate, Iloilo. The study was dependent on the data given by the respondents and not all data maybe reliable. The assumption that changes in effort and adjustment in fishing stocks were taken into consideration. The findings of the study showed that 93.75 % of the fisherman respondents were dependent on fishing for their livelihood. All the fishermen except the hook and line operators could not be considered as absolute poor as their income compared to the poverty threshold. The cost and return analysis of the study showed that fish corral operators incurred the lowest opportunity cost, which amounted to PHP 31.47, while crab pots registered the highest opportunity cost of PHP 48.39. Set gillnet incurred the highest variable cost of PHP 80.62 per trip. Crab pot incurred the highest fixed cost, which amounted to PHP 56 0 per trip. In profit, crab pot incurred the highest gross profit with PHP 380.58, and hook and line registered the lowest gross profit of PHP 1.30 per trip. As expected, the crab pot incurred the highest net profit of PHP 276. 19 per trip. Moreover, in all profitability indices, crab pot, push net, and set the gillnet posted positive receipts. Fish corral and hook and line incurred negative profitability indices. The variations in the results can be attributed to the difference in gears used by the respondents, average trip per week, average hour per trip, percentage of motorized and non-motorized boats, and the average volume of catch per trip. The most common problem faced by the respondents was the presence of illegal fishing in their area. In line with the goals to increase the productivity and welfare of the small-scale fishermen in Banate, the government should give support and assistance in order to upgrade the living conditions of the municipal fishermen.Item Politics in rice producing irrigated area in Northeastern Iloilo (Barotac Nuevo-Pototan Area)Bajade, Ian Louie V.; Macaldo, Felipe E., Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-04)This research project is an exploratory study which determines the power relations among individuals, groups, groupings and entities involved in rice production process in the rice producing irrigated area of Northeastern Iloilo. This study was conducted in the Barangays of Tabucan and Cabilauan of Barotac Nuevo and Tuburan and Tomcon Ilaud of Pototan using interviews with respondents and selected key informants and secondary data taken from the records of the Municipal Agrarian Reform Office, local government units, Philippine National Police blotter and farmers' organization of the locale of the study as sources of information of this research project. It was found out that: (1) there is a three level class structure in the locale of the study; (2) the three level class structure leads to a corresponding three level power relations among individuals inside the realm of rice production process; (3) the tenurial arrangements solely determines the distribution of productivity among individuals and entities involve in rice production and (4) the tenants are biggest class of exploiters in the production process brought about by the widespread practice of sub- tenurial arrangement-pamorsyento which makes the tenants "ersatz landlord" and exploiters of the nagapamorsyento-farm laborer. Tracing the flow of politics in rice producing irrigated area, it was found that the tenurial arrangement gives shape to the power relations in the locale of the study.Item An assessment of the fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo, 1992-1998Almero, Flora B.; Gerona, Ma. Leda G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-12)This research project is an assessment of the fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo. The study covers the fourteen (14) coastal municipalities of the Province namely; the Municipality of Anilao, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Dumangas, Estancia, Miag- ao, Oton, San Dionisio, San Joaquin and Tigbauan. The primary data were taken from the various municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities under study, and the national fishery policies (RA 7160, PD 704, RA 8550). The researchers also employed field interviews with selected fisherfolk leaders as a source of first hand information concerning the recent situation of the fishery industry in their respective municipalities. It was found that: (1) the fishery industry in the Province of Iloilo is facing problems on overexploitation, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction; (2) the primary concern of the over-all policy mosaic for the fishery industry is the rehabilitation and protection of the coastal environment, the limitation of access to fishery resources comes as the secondary concern, while the protection of the rights of municipal fisherfolk appears in a very limited number of promulgations only; (3) generally the provisions in the over-all policy mosaic is consistent and complimentary, both vis-a-vis the national fishery policies and within their respective municipal fishery ordinances where the provisions belongs. Assessing the municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo, it was found that the goal of the over-all policy mosaic is the promotion of sustainable development for the fishery industry so as to achieve food security in terms of fish.Item Students’ conceptions of learning and learning styles and teachers’ conceptions of teaching and teaching stylesAlegario, Sharon S.; Palec, Rhea Q. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-03)This study aimed to identify the relationship that exists between students' conceptions of learning and their learning styles, teachers' conceptions of teaching and their teaching styles and students' learning styles and teachers' teaching styles. Respondents of the study were three (3) Communication 11 teachers, three (3) Mathematics 14 teachers and twenty of their respective students. It was conducted last February 7 to 18, 2000, AY 1999-2000 at the CAS Bldg. using a survey. There were two sets of questionnaire, one for the students and one for the teachers. The first set included the Conceptions of Learning Questionnaire and the Learning Style Inventory using a five-point scale and the second set included the Conceptions of Teaching Questionnaire and the Teaching Style Inventory. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to determine the relationship that exists between students' conceptions of learning and their learning styles and the students' learning styles and their teachers' teaching styles. While the Spearman Rank-Order Correlation was used to determine the relationship that exists between teachers' conceptions of teaching and their teaching styles. Results of the study indicated that there is a positive relationship between students' conception of teaching as a complex process and their teaching style of an expert. The study also showed that there is a positive relationship between students' conceptions of learning as increasing one's knowledge and their active experimentation learning style. There is also a positive relationship between teachers' expert teaching style and their students' active experimentation learning style. It is recommended that future researchers would look into other different learning styles and teaching styles that match, which will result to an improved learning environment and a higher academic achievement.Item Multiple roles and stress among UPV administration married female employeesAlejandro, Clara Fe. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2000-10)This study explored whether working family women experience stress brought about by their performance of multiple roles as wife, mother, homemaker, and wage-earner. Their 24-hour activity profile was also examined to provide information on how they spend and allocate their time on these various roles. Twenty-three (23) married female employees from the UPV Administration offices were purposively chosen as respondents for this study. The data were obtained by the use of a questionnaire (work and family stress scale) and interview schedule. Results showed that 82.6% of the respondents experience moderate level of stress while 17.4% of the respondents experience low level of stress. Respondents also revealed that the most stressful factor among work and family roles is the conflict on whether to prioritize family over career. While the least stressful variable is the disapproval encountered from people (e.g. family, friends, and neighbors) because they work full-time and do not stay at home. Lastly, the 24-hour activity profile of the respondents showed that aside from their office jobs, they regularly perform a number of homemaking activities.Item Gender differences among nurses in relation to self-efficacy and attitude towards their terminally ill patientsAndag, Marites A.; Botes, Melanie A. (Division of Social Sciences, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology , University of the Philippines in the Visayas, 2001-03)This study sought to find out whether gender differences has a significant relationship on self-efficacy among nurses and attitude towards their terminally ill patients. Twenty (20) male and twenty (20) female nurses from Iloilo Doctors’ Hospital were randomly chosen to serve as participants for this study. The Self-efficacy Scale by Ralf Schwarzer and Matthias Jerusalem (1993) and a modified Attitude Checklist developed by Charlotte Epstein (1975) were utilized for data gathering. Results showed no significant difference in the level of self-efficacy among nurses in relation to their gender. Moreover, no significant difference exists in the nurses’ attitude towards terminally ill patients in relation to their gender. The Pearson- Product Moment Correlation revealed that there is a positive correlation between self- efficacy and attitude towards their terminally ill patients according to gender, male (r=0.37), female (r =0.31), though it is considered as a weak correlation. The researchers recommend that further research should be conducted with the topic under study with a bigger sample for a more valid and reliable results. It would also be better if other factors aside from gender will be considered as determinants in differences in the level of self-efficacy of nurses and attitude towards terminally ill patients.Item A descriptive study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminismBelen, Marian Davie (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)This is a gender study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminism. This study aims to describe the perceptions of UPV CAS female students on family, marriage, employment, rights and duties, feminism, feminist movement and feminists, contemporary Filipina and economics and politics, and to determine if their perceptions are feminist in leaning. The researcher conducted a survey by giving out questionnaires to UPV CAS female students. Moreover, gender-related materials in the library were also utilized such as books, magazines, journals, etc. The respondents were chosen through the stratified random sampling technique. The study reveals that the responses, considering all year levels, do not seem to vary considerably. There has not been so much difference in their responses although younger students seemed quite conservative in their outlook in some matters. The study also reveals that the respondents had a positive perception towards feminism since most of their responses on the items were feminist in leaning. Most of their responses indicate that women these days are more or less enjoying a favorable status in society, although they still believe that gender inequality still exists. Moreover, they think that feminism is still necessary for Filipinas.Item The political career of Mayor Romulo Cabana of Leon, Iloilo (1992-2001)Andrada, Ed Nathan; Torrijos, Richelle Paul (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-04)This is the study on the political career of Romulo C. Cabana, a three-term municipal mayor of Leon, Iloilo (1992-2001). The objectives of the study were: to trace Romulo Cabana’s ascendancy as the top executive of the Municipality of Leon, which includes his inherent qualities, political affiliations, socio-economic position, educational background and strategies that led to his election as mayor; to assess Mayor Cabana’s political philosophies and leanings, and; to make a comparison between the programs of the Municipal Government and what were accomplished. To achieve these objectives, the researchers used the following methods: an archival research, which includes materials contained in the different agencies of the local government, and the local library of the Municipality of Leon; interview with key informants, which includes the mayor himself and a number of local constituents who have the knowledge and experience associating with Mayor Cabana. The researchers have found out, that as a political leader, Romulo Cabana, has inherent qualities and characteristics that led his career to a three-term mayor of the Municipality of Leon. He has the willingness to serve his constituents, especially those who are less fortunate in the society. His socio-economic background had further induced and strengthened his cause for the “masa” or the ordinary people. Mayor Cabana’s political career had once proved that, political strategies and affiliations were secondary if not only to serve as a background to public service and societal responsibilities. With his career he also proved that experience and practicability is more worth than the highest educational attainment or status. With his unique political repertoire and humanistic charisma, many of his constituents in Leon had described him as the most “loved,” and the most respected municipal mayor in Leon to date. And with few critics on the opposite side, Mayor Cabana did his job steadfastly with a vision for growth and development of the Municipality of Leon.Item The level of masculinity and femininity and patterns of self-disclosure to male and female friends of UPV freshmen studentsArceo, Daniel Keith M.; Carinal, Jotter Perzeus C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study sought to find out the level of Masculinity and Femininity of freshmen students, their patterns of self - disclosure in terms of gender and if there is a relationship between the two mentioned variables. Forty (40) male and forty (40) female freshmen students (SY 2001-2002) and at the same time staying in the dormitories were randomly selected as participants for this study. A modified Masculinity and Femininity Test based oh the masculinity and femininity traits given in the undergraduate thesis of Marañon (1992) and a modified self - disclosure test by Miller, Berg and Archer (1983) were utilized for data gathering. It was found in the study that among the 40 male respondents, 52.5% scored high in the masculinity items while 47.5% scored high in the femininity items. While the female respondents showed a big difference wherein 70% of them scored high in the femininity items and only 25% of them scored high the masculinity items. On the other hand, five percent of the female respondents were found to be androgynous. Patterns of self-disclosure showed that three fourths (3/4) of the male and female respondents prefer to self-disclose to their same sex and only one fourth of them would self-disclose more to their opposite sex or to both male and female friends. The results revealed that there is a significant correlation between the following relationships: a.) Males’ masculinity level and their self-disclosure to male friend; b.) Males’ masculinity level and their self-disclosure to female friend; c.) Males’ femininity level and their self-disclosure to male friend; d.) Males’ femininity level and their selfdisclosure to female friend; e.) Females’ femininity level and their self-disclosure to female friend; f.) Females’ femininity level and their self-disclosure to male friend. However, based on a t-critical 0.304, the following have shown weak relationship with each other. It is difficult to conclude that the level of masculinity and femininity generally affects the pattern of self-disclosure of UPV freshmen students. It was also found in the study that the following have no significant relationship with each other: a.) Females’ masculinity level and their self-disclosure to female friend; b.) Females’ masculinity level and their self-disclosure to male friend.Item Helpees' gender and help-seeking behaviorAddat, Sittie Jayhan M.; Tamboong, Eleanor P. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study was conducted to determine whether there was a difference between male and female students of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas Division of Biological Sciences on their help-seeking behavior. The sample was composed of 30 males and 30 females enrolled during the second semester on academic year 2001-2002.The respondents were chosen through simple random sampling. A 5-point Likert scale was used to measure differences between male and female respondents on help-seeking behavior. The t-test at .05 level of significance was used to establish any significant difference between male and female respondents. To establish on the differences in sources of help among male and female respondents, chi-square was set at .05 level of significance. The Kendall Coefficient of Concordance was used to determine any significant difference between male and female respondents on the type of problem they sought help for. The results of the study showed that males sought help more frequently than males [t= .29, σ .05|. The correlation between gender and sources of help was found to be significant for problem type (Academic, χ=14.01 at σ < .05; Financial, =9.41 at σ < .05; Emotional/Personal, χ=26.39 at σ < .05; Peer Pressure χ=20.13 at < .05; and Spiritual, χ= 15.17 at σ < .05). In Family related problems was found to be insignificant with χ= 4.58 at σ < .05. The correlation between gender and type of problem being helped was found to be significant with a value of s = 13478 for W .214 at σ < .05.Item Collaboration in Altavas, Aklan during the Japanese occupation: The case of Dr. Roque R. MayorArboleda, Leah S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This is the study of Dr. Roque Mayor's role during the Japanese Occupation of Altavas, Aklan, what are the causes of their collaboration and their contributions in Altavas' local history. This study described the nature of collaboration, identified the factors that caused the Mayors to collaborate with the Japanese authorities during their occupation of the town and analyzed the significance of Dr. Roque Mayor's collaboration. Dr. Roque Mayor collaborated with the Japanese to minimize the sufferings of the civilians of Altavas. He showed cooperation with the Japanese and on the other hand, he gave vital information relative to the activities of the Japanese. To ensure his safety and the civilians, he requested the guerrillas not to raid the town. With his collaboration, no further killings had occurred in their ten-month occupation of the town.Item Health, social support, and life satisfaction of selected older persons in Asilo de MoloBacolor, Heidi F. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)This study was undertaken in order to determine the current status of older persons in Asilo de Molo in terms of health, social support and life satisfaction. Eighteen (18) elders, four (4) males and fourteen (14) females were chosen through convenient sampling as respondents of this study. Katz'' Activities of Daily Living Scale, Lawton’s Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale and Dr. Andrew Goliszek’s Life Satisfaction Index were utilized to gather the necessary data. Using the mode, the frequencies and percentage distributions for each variable were tabulated and analyzed. Results showed that respondents are relatively in good health condition and that majority of the reported cases of disease and chronic conditions are linked to normal aging namely, poor vision, hypertension and arthritis. Moreover, a large percentage of the respondents can function fairly independently by themselves, which means they can perform at least 50% of the activities in the ADL and IADL scales with minor assistance from the social and health workers. In terms of social support, the findings are contradictory to previous researches that highlight the primary importance of family and relatives as sources of support, both in material and non-material aspects. Instead, the bottom-line lifelines identified are the social workers. Life satisfaction findings reveal that majority of the respondents are moderately satisfied with their life, contrary to negative stereotypes on older persons living in institutions.Item The effect of playing violent video games and gender on aggression among first year students in Iloilo National High SchoolBalicanta, Alexander John F.; Cacho, Charlotte J. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)The study was conducted to determine the effects of playing violent video games and gender on aggression among first-year high school students. The experimental design utilized two treatment groups and two control groups. The four groups consisted of (1) males who played the violent videogame; (2) females who played the violent videogame; (3) males who played the nonviolent videogame; and (4) females who played the nonviolent videogame. In this study, aggression was measured using the Direct and Indirect Aggression Scales (DIAS). The DIAS consists of 24 items that measure physical, verbal, and indirect aggression. Prior to the administration of the DIAS, the participants were first asked to play video games. Two groups were assigned to play a violent video game, and the other two groups played a nonviolent game. The participants’ scores in the DIAS were computed and analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with interaction. This is done to show if the variables type of video game played and gender significantly affect aggression among adolescents. The two-way ANOVA with interaction yielded three computed values of F. Results show that there is a significant F-ratio on the variable type of video game played. The obtained F is 5.45, and an F of 4.26 is required at the 0.05 level with 1 and 27 df. Since 5.45 is greater than 4.26, the null hypothesis is rejected. Thus, the conclusion is that the type of video game played has a significant effect on aggression among first-year high school students. However, the F-ratio derived for the variable gender was not significant. The obtained F is 3.59, and an F of 4.26 is required at the 0.05 level with 1 and 27 df. Since the value of F is less than 4.26, the null hypothesis on gender is accepted. Thus, gender has no significant effect on aggression among first-year high school students. The F ratio derived for the interaction of the two variables is also not significant. The computed value of F., which is only 0.297, is less than 4.26. The null hypothesis, thus, is rejected. This leads to the conclusion that the type of videogame played and gender do not interact to affect aggression.
