Item A case study of community-oriented policing system in two crime-prone barangays in Iloilo City under the jurisdiction of Police Precincts 1 and 3Bernaldez, Cristina A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study primarily deals with police -community relationship on the two crime- prone barangays in Iloilo City. It looked into the dynamics of police-community cooperation and collaboration as they geared towards in pursuing a safe place. It also examined their perception towards each other and public trust on police to establish partnership. In the process of achieving a safe community, they were challenged by the issues and problems towards crime prevention. In order to answer the objectives, the researcher used survey and key informant interviews to serve as primary data. Library research at UPV and Camp Delgado was also done. The findings of the study revealed that barangay residents were willing to cooperate on crime prevention efforts by means of attending civic undertakings and reporting crimes. The police and other support groups also took participation by patrolling and giving feedbacks, as well as participation on lectures and trainings for public education and information. However, it showed that the police needed to initiate more lectures and trainings as well as dialogues. Communities have positive perception on police performance, they also trusted the police regardless of the issues raised by some of them. On the contrary, the police saw the residents as hostile. However, as they employed community interactions and strategies they have seen transformations on the behavior and lifestyle of the residents. Most of the issues and problems raised by the residents were more on police duty, visibility, and communication. The key informants raised the issues and problems on crime activities such as drug addiction and thefts, use of sports and leisure equipment and peace and security. The efforts on the employment of COPS on the two barangays seemed to be successful as manifested by the decline of crime rate.Item A case study on the coastal resource co-management of Concepcion, IloiloCaballero, Noemi G.; Overio, Sheryl R. Concepcion A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-03)This study aims to know and compare the marital satisfaction, trust and intimacy of wives in long distance and geographically close relationships. Forty (40) wives of seafarers from Miagao, Iloilo were selected through referral sampling for the long distance relationship and 40 wives from Lapaz, Iloilo City were selected through convenience sampling for the geographically close relationship. Four (4) respondents were interviewed for each type of relationship. Four (4) instruments were utilized namely: Enrich Marital Satisfaction Scale, Trust in Close Relationships Scale, Miller Social Intimacy Scale, and an interview guide developed by the researchers. Results showed that the respondents are generally satisfied, trusting, and are intimate with their partners. Wives in long distance and geographically close relationships do not significantly differ in marital satisfaction and trust but significantly differ in intimacy. Furthermore, distance does not significantly affect marital satisfaction and trust but there is a moderately negative correlation between distance and intimacy.Item A comparative study on the perceived work stress, work-related stressors, and coping strategies of fish vendors in AntiqueCabigunda, Greshanne J.; Moquera, Mabelle M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-07)Fish vending is a common source of income in Antique, Philippines. Fish vendors are classified into two vendor groups: formal vendors who sell inside public markets and informal vendors who sell their products on the streets. Research shows that these groups encounter varied work experiences given their differing working conditions. However, existing research is not enough to describe their stressful work experiences as well as their coping strategies. Thus, this research study aimed to describe and compare the work-related stress of fish vendor groups in Antique and how they cope with it. To address these, a convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. A total of 40 fish vendors with a mean age of 44.70 years, classified as formal (20) and informal (20), served as respondents. Data were gathered using a one-on-one interview with a question guide and a modified survey instrument for levels of perceived work stress (LPWS). Mann-Whitney U analysis revealed no significant difference between the overall LPWS of both groups (W= 4272.50, p>0.05). However, per dimension analysis of results showed a significant difference in the physical work environment dimension (W= 85.50, p<0.001). Conceptual content analysis also indicated that work-related stressors and coping strategies are relatively different between vendor groups and across dimensions. The findings of this research suggest that the physical work environment is a significant dimension that differentiates fish vendor groups’ levels and sources of work stress. Moreover, findings imply that social resources, especially among co-vendors, reduce LPWS.Item A critical review of UPV-based Coastal Resource Management (CRM) studiesAgris, Charmaine Joy F. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-08)This undergraduate research project is a critical review of UPV-Based Coastal Resource Management (CRM) studies from four significantly diversesources covering a total of fifty two (52) CRM studies. This research aims to identify and to critically analyze the collection of undergraduate projects of Political Science and Economics students of the University of the Philippines in the Visayas, select articles from Danyag: Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences articles, unpublished studies deposited in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE) and the December 2006 Culture and Resource Management issue of Palayag of the Center for West Visayan Studies. The studies were distributed into different categories and subcategories to ensure that they are divided into mutually exclusive and independent groups and so as to avoid overlapping of data. Employing the system of categorization, this critical review analyzes the range of themes and topics tackled in the studies and is intended to determine the development of research methodology, theoretical and conceptual framework, and findings of the studies included in all the categories. The four major categories are: (a) Studies on Decentralized Management, (b) Studies on Natural Resource Governance, (c) Social Dynamics in Coastal Resource Management, and (d) Human Dimensions in Coastal Resource Management. The extensive listings of coastal resource management studies revealed that country’s CRM practices are rooted on participation, collaboration and is geared towards sustainability. A holistic coastal resource management practice should be modeled on the synthesis drawnfrom the knowledge, skills and past experiences from both governmental and local efforts to the management of coastal resources.Item A descriptive study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminismBelen, Marian Davie (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-03)This is a gender study on the perceptions of UPV-CAS female students towards feminism. This study aims to describe the perceptions of UPV CAS female students on family, marriage, employment, rights and duties, feminism, feminist movement and feminists, contemporary Filipina and economics and politics, and to determine if their perceptions are feminist in leaning. The researcher conducted a survey by giving out questionnaires to UPV CAS female students. Moreover, gender-related materials in the library were also utilized such as books, magazines, journals, etc. The respondents were chosen through the stratified random sampling technique. The study reveals that the responses, considering all year levels, do not seem to vary considerably. There has not been so much difference in their responses although younger students seemed quite conservative in their outlook in some matters. The study also reveals that the respondents had a positive perception towards feminism since most of their responses on the items were feminist in leaning. Most of their responses indicate that women these days are more or less enjoying a favorable status in society, although they still believe that gender inequality still exists. Moreover, they think that feminism is still necessary for Filipinas.Item A short-run estimate of electricity consumption among selected barangays in the town proper of OtonApuang, Anna Mae L.; Lobrin, Raphael C. (Division of Social Sicences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)The electricity demand estimation was conducted in the municipality of Oton, Iloilo Province; specifically between 2 town proper barangays and among 125 out of 1246 households it also describes the socio-economic profile of the respondents. The econometric model’s dependent variable was the households’ electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours, while the independent variables used in the study were marginal price of electricity, household size, monthly household expenditures, average price of LPG, and dummy variables for major appliances, namely: refrigerator, air conditioner, TV, and fan. The modified double-log form was chosen to correct for non-normality. The resulting R-square was .631. The price and income coefficient is inelastic, as expected of a necessity, although the sign of the former is unexpectedly positive. Thus, consumption increases along with improvements in the appliance stock. Appliances, like air conditioners and refrigerators, are expectedly among the most influential variables. Income is inelastic, showing that electricity is a normal good. The consumption of liquid petroleum gas has no significant impact on electricity consumption since LPG serves to fulfill the minimum requirement of heating fuel. The household size and fuel variable are significant, yet at a lesser degree. The non-significant variables are the TV and fan appliance variable.Item A survey on the educational qualifications of AM radio broadcasters in Iloilo CityArmada, Cornelio Jude C.; Braquis, Kristian Peace Alegria (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-11)This study "A Survey on the Educational Qualifications of AM Radio Broadcaster in Iloilo" aims to (1) identify the educational qualifications of AM Radio Broadcasters in Iloilo City; (2) determine the number AM Radio Broadcasters in Iloilo City earned a degree in Mass Communications/Broadcasting and other communication-related courses; (3) and identify the qualifications considered by AM Radio Stations in hiring broadcast practitioners. Only one practitioner is Undergraduate while the other two are graduates of a 2-year course. Five graduates of communication-related courses were also able to have a post-graduate study. The results of the study show that there are only 24 graduates of Mass Communication, Broadcast Communication and other communication-related courses working in the industry. Meanwhile, almost all of the AM radio station managers ranked a graduate of a 4-year course as the most considered qualification in hiring broadcast practitioners. Other qualifications considered are communication and writing skills, mental/intellectual capacity/ analytical, work ethics/attitude/character, talent and abilities, voice quality/diction, civil service eligibility, and experience.Item An assessment of LGU-NGO-PO partnership in establishment of the Kalibo save the mangrove (Kasama) project in barangayAtienza, Aprille Danily C.; Quioyo, Chloe F. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)Fifteen (15) KASAMA members of the original beneficiaries of the Kalibo Save the Mangrove Project were interviewed for this study. The existence of poverty as a result of environmental degradation pushed the three main stakeholders, namely, the LGU of Kalibo, the USWAG Development Foundation, Inc., and the KASAMA Association to reforest 10 hectares of mangrove in the 1990s. The study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the project through livelihood development, people’s participation, and sustainable development. It also seeks to describe the factors that led to the partnership as well as the different issues and concerns of the stakeholders in managing the project. A survey and key informant interviews were conducted to gather the necessary data. Results show that there was no genuine organizing involved in the project implementation. Respondents and informants share their insights on project implementation and recommendations for its improvementItem An assessment of the fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo, 1992-1998Almero, Flora B.; Gerona, Ma. Leda G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-12)This research project is an assessment of the fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo. The study covers the fourteen (14) coastal municipalities of the Province namely; the Municipality of Anilao, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Dumangas, Estancia, Miag- ao, Oton, San Dionisio, San Joaquin and Tigbauan. The primary data were taken from the various municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities under study, and the national fishery policies (RA 7160, PD 704, RA 8550). The researchers also employed field interviews with selected fisherfolk leaders as a source of first hand information concerning the recent situation of the fishery industry in their respective municipalities. It was found that: (1) the fishery industry in the Province of Iloilo is facing problems on overexploitation, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction; (2) the primary concern of the over-all policy mosaic for the fishery industry is the rehabilitation and protection of the coastal environment, the limitation of access to fishery resources comes as the secondary concern, while the protection of the rights of municipal fisherfolk appears in a very limited number of promulgations only; (3) generally the provisions in the over-all policy mosaic is consistent and complimentary, both vis-a-vis the national fishery policies and within their respective municipal fishery ordinances where the provisions belongs. Assessing the municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo, it was found that the goal of the over-all policy mosaic is the promotion of sustainable development for the fishery industry so as to achieve food security in terms of fish.Item An institutional analysis of Sibalom Natural Park-Protected Area Management Board on community-based ecotourism in Sibalom, AntiqueAtienza, Perlyn F.; Pingoy, Whelannie Y. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)This is an exploratory and evaluative study aimed to conduct an institutional analysis of the Protected Area Management Board (PAMB), specifically, in the management of Sibalom Natural Park (SNP) in Sibalom, Antique. Seventeen (17) representatives from the three (3) member-institutions of PAMB and two (2) People’s Organizations (POs) were chosen through purposive interview as respondents. Focused group discussion (FGD) and key informant interview (KII) were utilized to gather necessary data. KII used a structured interview. Secondary data from the different member-institutions of PAMB were also sources of essential information needed in the study. The performance of PAMB in managing the SNP was analyzed based on the four components of management. These four components were delegations of functions, utilization of financial resources, conflict management, and leadership and mandates. It was found out that the SNP-PAMB members’ responsibilities were not clearly defined and there was no strict delineation of each of the member-institutions’ roles and functions. Since the organization does not have enough funds to sustain its existing projects and to initiate new ones, projects and activities were financed through the individual efforts of the members. Though there is lack of coordination among members, they do not consider it as conflict. Factors such as unstable financial status, limited activities, lack of a clear institutional structure hinder the implementation of the existing mandates for the operations of PAMB.Item Analysis of credit card demand of UPV Faculty membersBene, Ivanhoe C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03)This research is an economic analysis of the demand for credit cards of UPV faculty members. Specifically, the research was undertaken to: describe the social and economic characteristics of existing and potential credit cardholders; estimate the credit card demand of UPV faculty and determine the significant factors affecting the demand. Logistic regression was utilized since the research is composed of a binary dependent variable which is the willingness to acquire a credit card. Results of the study revealed that 40 percent of the sampled UPV faculty members were instructors who belong to age bracket 21-28 years old. In general, the average age of a UPV faculty was 38 years old with average annual personal gross income of PhP230,000. On the other hand, 18 percent of the respondents were willing to acquire a credit card while 19 percent were credit cardholders. Deferred payment was the most common feature being used by existing cardholders while traveling was the most frequent activity in which credit card was commonly used. On the average, an existing cardholder used his/her card twice a month with an average of PhP3,530 amount of credit availed during the month and paid an average monthly finance charge of 3.25 percent. SAS output showed that; merchant acceptability, convenience and income were the significant factors affecting the demand.Item Ang pangayaw sa dutang ginsaad: A study of Ilonggo migration and settlement in Tacurong, Cotabato, 1951-1960'sBernardo, Arellano M., III (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)“Ang Pagpangayaw sa Dutang Ginsaad: A Study of Migration and Settlement of Ilonggos in Tacurong, Cotabato (1951-1960’s)” discusses about the migration of the Ilonggos to Mindanao, particularly in a predominant Christian City of Tacurong. In the 1950’s all the way towards 1970’s, there was a massive migration of Ilonggos going to Mindanao. Most of them were attracted due to the flow of information coming from “The Land of Promise” in which they believed that they can avail any jobs and lands in an untapped island. This changed the social, economic, political and demographic profile of Mindanao and marked events that would shape the Philippine history. Triggered by social unrest, overcrowding problems, protectionist policies, economic interests and assimilation by the American colonial government, land settlements were opened to the Christian settlers of Luzon and the Visayas. It therefore, initiated government-sponsored programs of resettlement in Mindanao. However, that proved to be unattractive to early prospectors. Efforts were improved later by the Commonwealth era where a good number of Ilonggos went there first. The old city and province were already experiencing deterioration after the sugar industry shifted to Negros Occidental and slow recovery after World War II due to endless politics, peace and order situation and unemployment. These pushed the Ilonggos to move south as they were attracted to the propaganda of the new Philippine government to develop and people Mindanao. Majority of the Christian migrants were not involved in the government- sponsored programs but because of the government propaganda of the “Land of Promise” and free and continuous flow of information that came from early Christian settlers in Mindanao, it became attractive to the peoples of Luzon and Visayas and therefore massive migration occurred in the 50’s all the way through the seventies. Along with their migration was their settlement in which they established their new lives, therefore adjusting themselves with the new environment yet culture was brought out from the heartland and was mixed with other cultures, creating a unique cosmopolitan way of life for most of the Mindanao towns and cities. For every Ilonggo pangayaw, one was seeking satisfaction from the efforts they made by coming down south. It was relative yet most of them stated that their lives improved in Mindanao.Item Anti-angiogenic properties of Cymbopogon citratus and Moringa oleifera using the Chorioallantoic membrane vascular assayAldeguer, Justine Joy A.; Cañonero, Katrina Anne M.; Cortum, Lyzandra S.; España, Reina Marian E.; Hidrosollo, Manolo Angelo S.; Jaboneta, Abigail Louice D.; Peralta, Karla Danielle T.; Tiosayco, Angeline Veil C. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)In the Philippines, the use of complementary and alternative medicine, such as plants, is beginning to become very common due to the rapidly increasing incidence of cancer in the country. Due to this increase, there have been claims that the most common plants have anticancer properties. These include lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and malunggay (Moringa oleifera). However, there had been scanty literature to prove these claims. The aim of this study is to screen the crude methanol extracts of C. citratus and M. oleifera leaves for anti-angiogenic property using Chorioallantoic Membrane Vascular Assay (CAMVA). Non-lethal concentrations of the plant extracts were embedded into filter paper disks and inserted into the chorioallantoic membrane of the ten-day-old duck embryos. A negative control group of duck eggs were left unopened. After 48 hours of incubation, the number of blood vessels in the chorioallantoic membrane of the duck embryos was manually counted using a dissected microscope. Results showed that extracts of M. oleifera and C. citratus were able to inhibit blood vessel growth in the chorioallantoic membrane of duck embryo. Between the two plants, crude methanol extracts of M. oleifera (12.10+ 0.836) showed a lesser number of developed blood vessels than the crude methanol extracts of C. citratus (14.50+0.637). The anti-angiogenetic properties of these plant extracts could be attributed to the presence of phytochemicals such as citral, quercetin, kaempferol, and niazimicin which have been proven to have anti-cancer properties. In conclusion, M. oleifera and C. citratus have anti-angiogenic properties, hence they are potential sources of natural treatment for tumor.Item Artisanal fishers: Knowledge on disaster risk, psychological preparedness, and psychosocial factors of resiliencyBalan, Anna Gabriell D. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)This study examined the knowledge on disaster risk, psychological preparedness for disaster threat and psychosocial factors of resiliency among artisanal fishers after typhoon Yolanda. Eighty-eight artisanal fishers participated in eight focus group discussions (FGDs) with 8-15 members each. They were administered a Hiligaynon-translated subscale of the Psychological Preparedness for Disaster Threat Scale or PPDTS (Zulch, Morrissey, Reser & Creed, 2012) and were asked questions guided by the developed Knowledge on Disaster Risk interview schedule and Psychosocial Factors of Resiliency interview schedule. Results showed that participants became more knowledgeable on disaster risk after typhoon Yolanda. Their knowledge is influenced by internal and external factors. They also displayed a high psychological preparedness for disaster threat. Psychosocial factors of resiliency that worked best for the participants are being resourceful and initiating a self-help strategy, assuming family- responsibility, faith in God, and material support coming from the different institutions.Item Attachment to parents, psychological well-being, and life aspirations of children in selected coastal communitiesAraneta, Czarinnah G.; Suyo, Jee Grace B. Two scales were used to rate the attachment to parents and psychological well-being of the respondents and an interview guide to know the life aspirations of the children. It was found out that the children of coastal communities generally have a positive psychological well-being and a high level of attachment to parents. The participants expressed their top three goals in life - finishing studies, life prosperity and service to God. They wanted to find high paying professional jobs and help in the income of their family. They also wished to live prosperously in a clean and peaceful community.Item Beep beep beep, ano ang sabi ng jeep? Stories of PUJ drivers in Iloilo City during the COVID-19 pandemicAvelino, Kiara Marie B.; Felix, Ma. Ysabelle M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2023-06)This qualitative study focused on the narratives of Public Utility Jeepney (PUJ) drivers who operated within Iloilo City' before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Seven (7) PUJ drivers who have at least five (5) years of experience as a PUJ driver and consider driving PUJs as their main source of income during the COVID-19 pandemic were recruited from different Jeepney Owners and Drivers’ Associations (JODRAs) in Iloilo City. An in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted with the PUJ drivers and two key informants. Open-ended questions were used which were then recorded and transcribed verbatim. The narratives of the PUJ drivers were analyzed using Narrative Thematic Analysis. The results of this study provided insights into the experiences of PUJ drivers, including the challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, their coping strategies, and the lessons learned from these experiences. The drivers encountered various challenges, such as financial hardship, physical and mental health concerns, and uncertainty about the future. To cope with the stress, they employed diverse strategies, such as seeking support from their networks, relying on religion and spirituality, distracting themselves, embracing their reality, and in some cases, denying the existence of the pandemic. The significance of social support, financial preparedness, awareness, and readiness for future crises was also emphasized. With these findings, the recommendations include access to healthcare and well-being, economic support and financial resilience, social support networks, comparative studies, and further research on the long-term impacts of COVID-19.Item Children of fathers behind bars: Evaluating their perceived social stigma in relation to their levels of self-esteem and social interactionCabarles, Maria L.; Muyco, Rich Girl S.
