Item Effects of commercial fishing operation on the municipality fisherfolks of Miag-ao, IloiloBianet, Hector C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-04)This is a study about the effects of commercial fishing operation on the municipal fisherfolks of Miagao, Iloilo, which focuses particularly on the social and economic aspects. This is a descriptive study which aims to describe the fishing technology, the social and economic characteristics, then determine the socio-economic efifects of commercial fishing operation on the municipal fisherfolks of Miagao, Iloilo. Interview of key respondents and archival research were conducted to obtain data and related information about the topic. The results of the study show that in the social aspect, operation of commercial fishing has no siginificant effect on the municipal fishefolks. In the economic aspect , however, the operation of commercial fishing has brought about a tremendous effects on the municipal fisherfolks’ catch. A reduce in the quantity and quality, in particular.Item Economics of different alternative livelihood projects in Southern Municipalities of IloiloBesana, Nikkei M.; Cang, Marianne S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2006-03)Poverty incidence in the Philippines is continuously increasing. In line with this the government seeks for opportunities for poverty alleviation. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in cooperation with the University of the Philippines in the Visayas (UPV) offered different alternative livelihood projects in southern municipalities of Iloilo namely: Tigbauan (shrimp paste making), Miag-ao (salt making) and San Joaquin (fish sauce making). The study described the socio- demographic profiles of the beneficiaries of the projects along with the problems encountered during and after the project implementation. The production processes were also described along with the costs of production. Revenues and profit were derived based on the existing price of the product in the market. Private cost was identified from first up to fourth liquidations. Profit was calculated in every livelihood project and accounted to 728.34 Php for shrimp paste making in Tigbauan, 2,205.54 for salt making Php in Miagao and 1,570 Php for fish sauce making in San Joaquin per individual. Payback period derived was 1.07 that means the initial investment will be recovered in no less than a year. Return on investment was 0.93, which implies that for every peso invested, 1.14 Php returns to the investmentItem The effect of the NFA rice subsidy program "Tindahan Natin" on the political attitudes of its rural poor household beneficiaries in Barangay Caraudan, Janiuay, IloiloBebelone, Diana Mae R.; Fernandez, Charity T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)This study described the food security situation in a rural village where an NFA Rice Subsidy Program “Tindahan Natin” is in operation. It analyzes whether or not the Tindahan Natin program (IV) affects the political attitudes (DV) of its rural poor household beneficiaries. The research assessed the various levels of external political efficacy, political cynicism, political trust, and cynical statism of thirty-three (33) rural poor households (16 non-beneficiaries and 17 beneficiaries) in Barangay Caraudan, Janiuay, Iloilo. The study employed the Quasi-Experimental Method, specifically the Nonequivalent Control Group Design (NCGD). Using the non-probability purposive snow-ball sampling technique, a survey was conducted which assessed the sociodemographic profile of the respondents and measured their levels of political attitudes through Likert-Scale statements. Results show that the “Tindahan Natin” program by the government has been effective in increasing the accessibility and availability of basic food resources— specifically rice—in Barangay Caraudan. The levels of political trust among the beneficiaries of the food subsidy program is a a little bit higher compared to the nonbeneficiaries, which means that the government program has possibly strengthened the positive attitude and outlook towards the government, its institutions, and bureaucracy in general. All rural poor household respondents are highly cynical towards the government and the elected leaders and politicians. A substantial majority—regardless of being a beneficiary or a non-beneficiary of the Tindahan Natin—are highly dependent on the government’s provision of public services addressing food insecurity. There is no difference in the respondents’ assessment of the responsiveness of the government.Item Worldview, life aspirations and quality of life of visually impaired children of SPED Integrated School, Iloilo CityBedia, Nadine Grace D.; Petrola, Mary Anne G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)A large number of the Philippine population has visual impairment problems and many of them are children. The study explored on the worldview, life aspirations and quality of life of visually impaired children. Five (5) visually impaired children aged 11-18 years old who studied at SPED Integrated School, Iloilo City were the participants of the study. Using a descriptive and phenomenological approach, the visually impaired children were purposively selected to answer the interview guide. Findings show that children under study came from nurturing homes and they get different reactions from their peers when they were mainstreamed unlike that when they are inside the SPED classroom. Also, they regarded some life aspirations to be important but the likelihood of attaining these goals was low. Generally, these children have moderate to good quality of life. Their level of superiority is low, thus, they have this feeling of inadequacy.Item Politics in rice producing irrigated area in Northeastern Iloilo (Barotac Nuevo-Pototan Area)Bajade, Ian Louie V.; Macaldo, Felipe E., Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-04)This research project is an exploratory study which determines the power relations among individuals, groups, groupings and entities involved in rice production process in the rice producing irrigated area of Northeastern Iloilo. This study was conducted in the Barangays of Tabucan and Cabilauan of Barotac Nuevo and Tuburan and Tomcon Ilaud of Pototan using interviews with respondents and selected key informants and secondary data taken from the records of the Municipal Agrarian Reform Office, local government units, Philippine National Police blotter and farmers' organization of the locale of the study as sources of information of this research project. It was found out that: (1) there is a three level class structure in the locale of the study; (2) the three level class structure leads to a corresponding three level power relations among individuals inside the realm of rice production process; (3) the tenurial arrangements solely determines the distribution of productivity among individuals and entities involve in rice production and (4) the tenants are biggest class of exploiters in the production process brought about by the widespread practice of sub- tenurial arrangement-pamorsyento which makes the tenants "ersatz landlord" and exploiters of the nagapamorsyento-farm laborer. Tracing the flow of politics in rice producing irrigated area, it was found that the tenurial arrangement gives shape to the power relations in the locale of the study.Item Costs and returns analysis of municipal hook and line fisheries in selected coastal barangays of Hamtic, AntiqueBaldevia, Joan R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03)This paper aims to determine the social and economic conditions of municipal hook and line fishermen; the cost structure of the hook and line fishing method; the profitability level of the municipal hook and line fishermen; the sharing system employed in the municipal hook and line fishery; and to identify the problems of the municipal hook and line fishermen. The study utilized the cost and return analysis. The limitation of this kind of analysis is the assumption that changes in effort and adjustment in fish stocks are taking place simultaneously. The percentage and average analysis failed to take full consideration of the time element of the study since it was based at a "one-shot" interview. The locale of the study are the selected coastal barangays of Hamtic, Antique namely Brgy. Caridad, Mapatag and Asluman. Any conclusions in this study is only applicable to the area concerned by this fishing gear and does not apply to other fishing grounds. Findings of the study showed that the average income of the municipal household was PhP 4168 which was below the average monthly income in Region VI which was PhP 5339.8. They can not be considered absolutely poor however because their average monthly income was still higher to the regional poverty threshold which was PhP 8197/year. Food was the biggest cost outlay of the municipal household which accounted for 68% of the total household expenses. In terms of cost structure, variable cost accounted for 84% of the total cost per trip. This showed that in every fishing trip, the fishermen needs to have enough money to cover its operating expenses. The small percentage of the total fixed cost relative to the total cost shows the level of mobility of the fishing unit to move to another gear type or even to another market of the fishing industry. Labor cost accounted for 48% to total cost per trip which showed how labor intensive is the hook and line fishing method. The opportunity cost, on the other hand, accounted for 13% of the total cost per trip. Almost all indices of profitability posted a negative values. This negative economic profit indicate a definite evidence of economic overfishing. It also indicate that the fishermen should seriously rethink their position in the fishing industry. The differences in findings of the study among the three sample barangays can be attributed to three important variables. First, is the average hour/trip and the average trip/per week. Since this is a per trip analysis, this had an implication on all variables. Secondly, is the number of motorized boats per barangay. Motorized boats have a higher depreciation cost, opportunity cost of owned capital and running cost. Third, would be the number of boats with crewmen/operators per barangay. This reflect the percentage of the respondents with a sharing system and this would entail a higher labor cost and consequently to total cost per barangay. The sharing system was flexible as evidenced by the different sharing arrangement between Brgy. Mapatag which had a 50-50 sharing arrangement compared to Brgy. Asluman and Caridad which was 60-40. The primary problem of the municipal fishermen was the presence of big fishing vessels like the baby purse seiner. Other problems mentioned were the illegal fishing operations like trawling which operate during the night, lack of capital for repair and maintenance and bad weather conditions. The improvement of the socioeconomic conditions of the fishermen should call for a general improvement of the environment in which they operate. The recommendations of the study asserts that the government should develop additional employment opportunities outside the fishery sector. Fishing effort should be controlled by regulation of entry in terms of number of boats or gears employed because of economic overfishing. Large scale fishing like the baby purse seiner should be regulated and trawling be effectively prohibited to increase the resource base of the small-scale fishery. A clear boundary line should then be put up to avoid encroachment of the big fishing vessels to the municipal waters.Item Project EDI WAM!: Everybody Do It: War Against Malnutrition in Brgy. Roma, San Joaquin, IloiloBalogo, Philip G.; Bomediano, Maria Jonnah R.; Esparagoza, Marevi T.; Gallo, Czareena Anne; Mallari , Maria Katerina; Murillo, Gilbert Guy D.; Ortono, Jevi Marie P.; Oteda, Kristine Joy D.; Pameroyan, Nesly Joy G.; Radones, Charmaine Mae Keyien G.; Santocildes, Camille S.; Tirador, Anna Katharina L. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-05)The Millenium Development Goals for the Philippines by 2015 is to reduce the underweight-by-age prevalence to 17.2% among 0-5 years old children. So far in 2013, the prevalence decreased from 20.7% in 2003 to 19.9%. Western Visayas ranks second (26.0%) in the most malnourished regions in the country, with trends increasing in Iloilo from 25.1% in 2008 to 27.4% in 2013. According to the National Nutrition Council, this small change in number for the past 10 years makes it unlikely that the country will achieve its MDG. Project EDI WAM! Every body Do It: War Against Malnutrition in Barangay Roma, San Joaquin, Iloilo aims to decrease the prevalence of malnutrition by 70% among children aged 24 to 72 months. Operation Timbang showed that out of the 42 children, 11 were identified as malnourished, giving a prevalence of 26.19%. Project EDI WAM! aims to decrease the number of undernourished children through health education, feeding, and supplementation programs. A functional core group of 9 members was formed and was later transformed into a Barangay Health Board. Cooking lessons dubbed Pinoy Mother Chef improved the mothers' food preparation practices and behavior. Hygiene and Sanitation increased by 36.60%, while proper meal planning increased by 24.83%. Ready-to-Use therapeutic food (RUTF) was prepared and supplemented to the children. Knowledge of mothers on health and nutrition also increased by 35.54%. Out of the 11 malnourished children, 4 were turned to normal, giving a decrease of 36.36%. The 70% goals was not achieved and may be attributed to the short period of time that the project was implemented. However there is a significant increase in weight among all the recipients (2.79% ) and malnourished (4.92%). A Mothers’ Association was established to continue the project advocacy, making the cooking and feeding program an annual event.
