Item Valuing the conservation of endangered species and their habitats in the Northwest Panay Peninsula Park: A preliminary study using contingent valuation method-(Personal Interview) of Kalibo ResidentsCahilig, Anahaw (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)Northwest Panay Peninsula (NWPP) is one of the centers of endemism of the country. It is home to diverse species of flora and fauna including species endemic to Panay with status ranging from endangered to critically endangered and an extremely and highly- urgent site for conservation. A survey using Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) was done in selected barangays of Kalibo, Aklan to determine the willingness to pay of the residents to the conservation of the endangered species and their habitats in the NWPP. The results showed that the Kalibo-residents were unfamiliar with the existence of the NWPP and the endangered species it harbors. The study yields a mean WTP using the Survivor function Approach of the Kalibo respondents of Php 3.17. month or Php 38.04/ yearly. Despite the low awareness about the NWPP and the endangered species, the eight barangays included in this study would pay Php 283474.08 for its conservation and of all Kalibo residents (Social WTP) with 12,628 households, they would pay Php 480, 369.12 annually. With the high level of unawareness about NWPP, it is recommended by the researchers that more sources of information should be made available, not just to the Aklanons, but all throughout the country since this abundance in biodiversity are pride of the Filipino Nation.Item Economic valuation of seagrasses in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras: A contingent valuation studyBundal, Kristine Shiela Mae B.; Taperla, Roald Ray B. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)This study assessed the willingness of the residents of Guimbal, Iloilo, to pay for the conservation of seagrasses in Nueva Valencia, Guimaras. The study was conducted to find solutions to the problem of growing seagrass decline in the area. The lack of necessary policies or programs and conservation financing, that would protect and improve the integrity of the resource are putting a lot of pressure not only on the associate resources, but also on the livelihood of the people who are dependent on the resource. The contingent valuation method (CVM) was used to elicit people’s willingness-to-pay to contribute to a conservation trust fund for the protection and improvement of the state of the estimated 20- hectare area of seagrasses in Barangay Tando. It has been under serious threats of rapid decline ever since the occurrence of the 2006 M/T Solar-1 oil spill, which also affected the area. The study found out that 89.32% of the respondents would be willing to pay to support the conservation of the seagrass ecosystem. The study also found out that the primary motivation behind the willingness-to-pay of the respondents was their concern for the benefit of future generations. In addition, based on the people’s WTP, an estimated amount of PHP 900,917.64 could be raised annually to fund or support the conservation of the seagrasses and its associate resources in Barangay Tando. Given this potential source of revenue, the residents preferred a payment collection scheme through additional taxes on property or utility bills like electricity bill. Furthermore, this study reveals pertinent socioeconomic and conservation financing implications that need to be considered in managing seagrass resources.Item Analysis of credit card demand of UPV Faculty membersBene, Ivanhoe C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1998-03)This research is an economic analysis of the demand for credit cards of UPV faculty members. Specifically, the research was undertaken to: describe the social and economic characteristics of existing and potential credit cardholders; estimate the credit card demand of UPV faculty and determine the significant factors affecting the demand. Logistic regression was utilized since the research is composed of a binary dependent variable which is the willingness to acquire a credit card. Results of the study revealed that 40 percent of the sampled UPV faculty members were instructors who belong to age bracket 21-28 years old. In general, the average age of a UPV faculty was 38 years old with average annual personal gross income of PhP230,000. On the other hand, 18 percent of the respondents were willing to acquire a credit card while 19 percent were credit cardholders. Deferred payment was the most common feature being used by existing cardholders while traveling was the most frequent activity in which credit card was commonly used. On the average, an existing cardholder used his/her card twice a month with an average of PhP3,530 amount of credit availed during the month and paid an average monthly finance charge of 3.25 percent. SAS output showed that; merchant acceptability, convenience and income were the significant factors affecting the demand.Item Politics in rice producing irrigated area in Northeastern Iloilo (Barotac Nuevo-Pototan Area)Bajade, Ian Louie V.; Macaldo, Felipe E., Jr. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 1999-04)This research project is an exploratory study which determines the power relations among individuals, groups, groupings and entities involved in rice production process in the rice producing irrigated area of Northeastern Iloilo. This study was conducted in the Barangays of Tabucan and Cabilauan of Barotac Nuevo and Tuburan and Tomcon Ilaud of Pototan using interviews with respondents and selected key informants and secondary data taken from the records of the Municipal Agrarian Reform Office, local government units, Philippine National Police blotter and farmers' organization of the locale of the study as sources of information of this research project. It was found out that: (1) there is a three level class structure in the locale of the study; (2) the three level class structure leads to a corresponding three level power relations among individuals inside the realm of rice production process; (3) the tenurial arrangements solely determines the distribution of productivity among individuals and entities involve in rice production and (4) the tenants are biggest class of exploiters in the production process brought about by the widespread practice of sub- tenurial arrangement-pamorsyento which makes the tenants "ersatz landlord" and exploiters of the nagapamorsyento-farm laborer. Tracing the flow of politics in rice producing irrigated area, it was found that the tenurial arrangement gives shape to the power relations in the locale of the study.Item A short-run estimate of electricity consumption among selected barangays in the town proper of OtonApuang, Anna Mae L.; Lobrin, Raphael C. (Division of Social Sicences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)The electricity demand estimation was conducted in the municipality of Oton, Iloilo Province; specifically between 2 town proper barangays and among 125 out of 1246 households it also describes the socio-economic profile of the respondents. The econometric model’s dependent variable was the households’ electricity consumption in kilowatt-hours, while the independent variables used in the study were marginal price of electricity, household size, monthly household expenditures, average price of LPG, and dummy variables for major appliances, namely: refrigerator, air conditioner, TV, and fan. The modified double-log form was chosen to correct for non-normality. The resulting R-square was .631. The price and income coefficient is inelastic, as expected of a necessity, although the sign of the former is unexpectedly positive. Thus, consumption increases along with improvements in the appliance stock. Appliances, like air conditioners and refrigerators, are expectedly among the most influential variables. Income is inelastic, showing that electricity is a normal good. The consumption of liquid petroleum gas has no significant impact on electricity consumption since LPG serves to fulfill the minimum requirement of heating fuel. The household size and fuel variable are significant, yet at a lesser degree. The non-significant variables are the TV and fan appliance variable.
