    Locus of control of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers: Its relation to their academic adjustment

    This study sought to determine the kind of locus of control of the respondents and the level of academic adjustment as seen in their grade point averages. The researchers aimed to find out if there exists a relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. This study was patterned on a previous research on the relationship between the same variables but this study utilized a different instrument and respondents came from Iloilo province. Fifteen (15) college students whose fathers were imprisoned at the time that they were enrolled served as respondents of the study. All respondents came from Iloilo, 33% of which are from Iloilo City and the remaining 67% are from the municipalities. Their ages range from 17-24. Respondents were selected using the snowball method. Respondents were asked to answer the Trice Academic Locus of Control Scale. The scale is composed of 28 items answerable by true or false determined the kind of locus of control of these male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. In addition, the respondents were asked to submit their copy of grades of the previous semester to determine how well they adjust academically. The computed Pearson Product Moment Correlation is r=0.26 with a rcrit=0.441 at 0.05 alpha. This signifies that indeed there is a significant relationship between locus of control and academic adjustment of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers. However, it revealed a weak positive correlation between locus of control and academic adjustment. The findings imply that locus of control is not the sole cause or factor for academic adjustment. The cause or source of a well-adjusted academic performance of male adolescents with imprisoned fathers may therefore be attributed to other factors such as economic and social support coming from family and friends. Such factors could even lead to a poor academic performance. Lastly, academic adjustment and locus of control vary among the respondents, which suggest individual differences among them

    Exposure to sexually violent films: Judgements on domestic violence

    This study aimed to know if exposures to sexually violent films have effect toward judgments on domestic violence victim. The three hypotheses were: 1) There is a significant effect from gradual exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim ; 2) There is a significant effect from sudden exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim and 3) There is a significant effect from non-exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim . This study is experimental which made use of randomized group design or (between group design). The participants of this study were composed of thirty (30) students of UPV Miag-ao, enrolled in Psychology 101 during the second semester on Academic year 2002-2003. The participants were chosen using the random sampling. They were equally distributed to three (3) treatment groups (2 experimental and 1 control group) with ten (10) participants each group. This research project utilized Rape Myth Acceptance Scale, Acceptance of Interpersonal Violence Scale and Myth on Domestic Violence Scale to measure the judgments of participants toward domestic violence victims. Splices from three films (Friday the 13th Part II, American Psycho and I Spit on Your Grave) were also used. The result of the study F (2,29) = 3.35 p< .05 yielded that there is a significant effect of non-exposure to sexually violent films toward judgments on domestic violence victim.

    Emotion work and its relation to job burnout and job satisfaction among call center agents in Iloilo City

    The current study aimed to describe the level of emotion work among call center agents in Iloilo city including the differences in their levels of emotion work between sex groups and types of call center work. It also attempted to show the relationship of emotion work to job burnout and job satisfaction. The design of the study was descriptive-correlational. Analyses were based on a sample of thirty available male and female (30) inbound and outbound call center agents from selected call centers in Iloilo city. Three data gathering instruments were used in this study, namely: Emotional Labour Scale (ELS), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and Job Satisfaction Survey (JSS). Statistical tools employed in the study were means for descriptive analysis, Mann - Whitney U for tests of difference and Spearman’s rho for correlations. Level of significance was set at 0.05 for both tests. The findings revealed that call center agents occasionally have intense experience of emotion work, whereas they sometimes experience a variety of emotion work. Moreover, they used deep acting regulation of emotion more compared to surface acting . Emotion work is correlated with job satisfaction while no relationship was found between emotion work and job burnout. Significant differences in the levels of emotion work existed both for groups based on sex and type of work.

    Marital satisfaction, gender equity, and marital conflict among selected elderly couples in Guimbal, Iloilo

    The study was conducted to find out the relationship among marital satisfaction, gender equity, and marital conflict among old married couples, as well as their pattern of conflict resolution. Nineteen (19) elderly couples from Guimbal, Iloilo married for at least 25 years and living with their families at the time of the study participated. The instruments used were the shortened version of the Comprehensive Marital Satisfaction Scale by Blum and Mehrabian (1999), the Gender Equity on Household Labor Scale, and the Conflict Resolution Questionnaire. Results show that marital satisfaction and marital conflict have a significant negative correlation at -0.460 [a=0.01 level of significance (2-tailed test)]. However, there was no correlation between marital satisfaction and gender equity at -0.214 and gender equity and marital conflict at 0.252 [a=0.01 level of significance (2-tailed test)]. The mean score (19.29) on the shortened version of the Comprehensive Marital Satisfaction Scale by Blum and Mehrabian (1999) indicates that the respondents have a high level of marital satisfaction. There was also a significant gender difference in the distribution of household labor as perceived by the males and the females with to=-16.36 (tc=<-2.042 or >2.042). Lastly, with regards conflict resolution, majority of the respondents use the compromise style. The outcomes of the study support previous studies which state that elderly marriages experience high level of marital satisfaction and less marital conflict.

    Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City: Their personal well-being, sense of national identity, and views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues

    This research examined the personal well-being, sense of national identity, and views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues of Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City. Twenty-one (21) males and twelve (12) females, 13-27 years of age, unmarried, and of Maranao descent participated in this research. Scales were used to rate the respondents' personal well-being and for general ethnicity. A questionnaire for pride in being Filipino used to determine their sense of national identity, and an open-ended questionnaire to determine their views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues. It was found out that the Philippine Muslim youths in Iloilo City have high level personal well-being where most respondents showed high scores in self-esteem, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with life. Most of the respondents also showed strong national identity. Respondents had held different views on post 9/11 sociopolitical issues. While 76% do not support the terrorists group, others (45%) do not support the man-hunt against it. and that 48% believe that the 9/11 event was plain terrorism.

    Health, social support, and life satisfaction of selected older persons in Asilo de Molo

    This study was undertaken in order to determine the current status of older persons in Asilo de Molo in terms of health, social support and life satisfaction. Eighteen (18) elders, four (4) males and fourteen (14) females were chosen through convenient sampling as respondents of this study. Katz'' Activities of Daily Living Scale, Lawton’s Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale and Dr. Andrew Goliszek’s Life Satisfaction Index were utilized to gather the necessary data. Using the mode, the frequencies and percentage distributions for each variable were tabulated and analyzed. Results showed that respondents are relatively in good health condition and that majority of the reported cases of disease and chronic conditions are linked to normal aging namely, poor vision, hypertension and arthritis. Moreover, a large percentage of the respondents can function fairly independently by themselves, which means they can perform at least 50% of the activities in the ADL and IADL scales with minor assistance from the social and health workers. In terms of social support, the findings are contradictory to previous researches that highlight the primary importance of family and relatives as sources of support, both in material and non-material aspects. Instead, the bottom-line lifelines identified are the social workers. Life satisfaction findings reveal that majority of the respondents are moderately satisfied with their life, contrary to negative stereotypes on older persons living in institutions.

    Multiple roles and stress among UPV administration married female employees

    This study explored whether working family women experience stress brought about by their performance of multiple roles as wife, mother, homemaker, and wage-earner. Their 24-hour activity profile was also examined to provide information on how they spend and allocate their time on these various roles. Twenty-three (23) married female employees from the UPV Administration offices were purposively chosen as respondents for this study. The data were obtained by the use of a questionnaire (work and family stress scale) and interview schedule. Results showed that 82.6% of the respondents experience moderate level of stress while 17.4% of the respondents experience low level of stress. Respondents also revealed that the most stressful factor among work and family roles is the conflict on whether to prioritize family over career. While the least stressful variable is the disapproval encountered from people (e.g. family, friends, and neighbors) because they work full-time and do not stay at home. Lastly, the 24-hour activity profile of the respondents showed that aside from their office jobs, they regularly perform a number of homemaking activities.

    Students’ conceptions of learning and learning styles and teachers’ conceptions of teaching and teaching styles

    This study aimed to identify the relationship that exists between students' conceptions of learning and their learning styles, teachers' conceptions of teaching and their teaching styles and students' learning styles and teachers' teaching styles. Respondents of the study were three (3) Communication 11 teachers, three (3) Mathematics 14 teachers and twenty of their respective students. It was conducted last February 7 to 18, 2000, AY 1999-2000 at the CAS Bldg. using a survey. There were two sets of questionnaire, one for the students and one for the teachers. The first set included the Conceptions of Learning Questionnaire and the Learning Style Inventory using a five-point scale and the second set included the Conceptions of Teaching Questionnaire and the Teaching Style Inventory. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to determine the relationship that exists between students' conceptions of learning and their learning styles and the students' learning styles and their teachers' teaching styles. While the Spearman Rank-Order Correlation was used to determine the relationship that exists between teachers' conceptions of teaching and their teaching styles. Results of the study indicated that there is a positive relationship between students' conception of teaching as a complex process and their teaching style of an expert. The study also showed that there is a positive relationship between students' conceptions of learning as increasing one's knowledge and their active experimentation learning style. There is also a positive relationship between teachers' expert teaching style and their students' active experimentation learning style. It is recommended that future researchers would look into other different learning styles and teaching styles that match, which will result to an improved learning environment and a higher academic achievement.

    Some psychosocial factors in adolescents' acceptance of sexual myths

    This study investigated the relationships of psychosocial factors namely: family openness in communication, religiosity, attitude towards sex, and sexuality education with adolescents’ acceptance of sexual myths. One hundred (100) first year college students composed of 50 males and 50 females from a public school completed a series of survey instruments designed to measure the variables under investigation. Design of the study was correlational. To show relationships between variables, data were analyzed using the Pearson r correlational statistic. Statistical analyses showed support for the relationship between religiosity and acceptance of sexual myths, that is, the higher the religiosity, the more is acceptance of sexual myths. The study also found support for the relationship between attitude towards sex and acceptance of sexual myths, that is, the more conservative is attitude towards sex the more is acceptance of sexual myths. However this result was obtained for male respondents only. The expected relationships for acceptance of sexual myths and the other variables were not supported in this study.

    Coping mechanisms of family members with autistic children

    This study aims to uncover the coping mechanisms of family members with autistic children. All five families are from Iloilo City. The study also sought to find out if and how the autistic child affects family cohesiveness. Ways of Coping Scale adopted from Folkman and Lazarus was utilized to determine the specific coping mechanism each family member is using. In-depth interview with the respondents was also conducted to come-up with a more detailed description of coping mechanism. The findings of the study show that the most mothers, sisters and the father predominantly use seeking meaning, an emotion-focused coping which is an attempt to discover new faith or what is important in life. On the other hand each brother uses different coping mechanisms in dealing with having an autistic member in the family. Results also show that having an autistic child makes the family more cohesive.
