Item Sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbiansCabungcal, Kristine Marie C.; Cebrian, Veah Marie P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2009-03)This study described the sexual identity, coming out, and romantic relationships among self-confessed college tomboys and lesbians. Eight respondents (6 tomboys; 2 lesbians) participated in this study. The tomboys were found to assume more of a masculine role, while lesbians the feminine role. Questionnaires were utilized to describe gender identity and coming out. Also, two Likert types of scales by John Mohr that is Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Identity Scale and Outness Inventory were used. One-one-one interview with the respondents was also conducted to further substantiate what it is being a tomboy or n.lesbian. Results showed that a greater number of respondents (50%) had experienced sexual identity confusion during their elementary years. The same percentage of respondents also reported that it was at the age of 15 that they first realized that they were homosexuals. All of the respondents are clear of their sexual identity and have fully accepted themselves. The respondents were open to their friends. While open to their friends, they remain to be closeted at home due to the stigma that is attached by their family members to tomboys and lesbians.Item The effect of perceiver's gender and masculinity on male masculinity performing female streotypic rolesCabrera, Gresilita Liza B.; Ochon, Maybelle Lalaine T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-10)This study was designed to examine the effects of perceiver’s gender and masculinity cues on male masculinity performing female stereotypic roles. 60 participants consisting of thirty males and thirty females, were randomly selected and assigned to four treatment groups. The groups had been assessed using the Instrument which comprises three descriptions with five items for the first description and 10 items for both the second and third descriptions. A 2x2 factorial design and two-way between ANOVA were used with a 0.05 significance level. The results showed that perceiver’s gender did not affect perception but masculinity cues yielded a considerable mark. Both male and female responded remarkably on descriptions with high masculinity cues only. The results further indicated that there is no interaction between the two independent variables.Item Koreans in Iloilo City: Their lifestyles, social-psychological and cultural adjustmentCabangal, Joann; Ledesma, Chrisgel (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study sought to know the sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, social- psychological, and cultural adjustment of Korean visitors in Iloilo City, who were currently enrolled in Moohan Tutorial Services, Inc. The results showed that Koreans in Iloilo City are generally single with ages ranging from 20 to 30 years old and are dependent on the allowances they receive from their parents or guardians monthly. The study also showed that Koreans in Iloilo City are relatively well adjusted in their life in the Philippines, which is manifested in their improved social interaction with the locals of Iloilo City. At the same time, they are generally well off as reflected on their spending patterns as compared to the Filipinos’ standard of living. They relatively spend more than an average Filipino would spend for food, transportation, clothing and many others for a certain period of time.Item A case study on the coastal resource co-management of Concepcion, IloiloCaballero, Noemi G.; Overio, Sheryl R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)The research study is entitled A CASE STUDY ON COASTAL RESOURCE COMANAGEMENT IN CONCEPCION, ILOILO. The study answers the following objectives, first, to determine the contextual attributes of the municipality in terms of: a biophysical, b) market c) socio-cultural d) institutional and organizational attributes. Second, to assess the institutional and organizational arrangement of state and non-state actors which include Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the non-governmental organizations, and their relationship with one another in coastal resource co-management in Concepcion. Iloilo. Third, is to determine the type of coastal co-management arrangement that exist in the municipality. The conceptual framework of the study was adopted from the International Council for Living and Aquatic Resource Management (ICLARM). Specifically, the researchers focused on the organizational and institutional arrangement among state and non-state actors in co-management arrangements. A determination was also made on the type of comanagement arrangement existing in the municipality. In the conduct of the study, the researchers conducted interviews with key informants and prepared questionnaires for the fisherfolk-respondents. The respondents are the following: a) Department of Environment and Natural Resources, b) Department of Agriculture, c) Local Government Officials (Legislative and Executive), d) Northern Iloilo Alliance for Coastal Development (NIACDEV), e) Tambaliza Small-Scale Fishermen's Association (TASFA). f) Nipa Small- Scale Fishermen's Association (NISFA). The results of the study showed that a consultative type of co-management arrangement exists in Concepcion based on a frequency count of answers to questionnaires, interviews conducted by the researchers, and an analysis of legal policies.Item Children of fathers behind bars: Evaluating their perceived social stigma in relation to their levels of self-esteem and social interactionCabarles, Maria L.; Muyco, Rich Girl S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-03)The study aimed to describe the relationship of social stigma experienced or perceived to self-esteem and level of social interaction of children with incarcerated father. Respondents consisted of thirty-two high school student ages 13-17 years old, either currently studying or out of school residing in the rural or urban areas of Iloilo. They were selected using a quota sampling method. Gathering of data was in the form of interview and questionnaire which was answered by the respondents. The study hypothesized that there is a relation between the self-esteem and level of social interaction, there is a relation between self-esteem and social stigma experienced or perceived by the children and there is a relation between the level of social interaction and social stigma experienced or perceived of the children with incarcerated father. Spearman-Rank Correlation (Rs) was used to analyze data. The results showed that only the self-esteem and the level of social interaction of children with incarcerated father has a relationship.Item The Margarico family: Political elite of Janiuay, Iloilo, PhilippinesCabarles, Helen A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This is a descriptive study of the Margarico as a political elite in Janiuay, Iloilo. The study was conducted using interview guide questions for key informants and archival research in gathering pertinent data. The research aims to (1) to identify the reasons that propels the Margarico family to seek political power in the municipal politics of Janiuay, Iloilo; and, (2) to identify the factors that enable the Magaricos to capture political power. The study found out that societal responsibility and public service are their prime reasons in seeking for political power in the municipal politics and that the socio-economic background of the political family is not the prime factor in their access to political positions. There are other factors that can account like good public reputation and good tract of records as public servant.Item Psychosocial costs of post-employment of Overseas Filipino Workers of Leon, IloiloBritanico, Lee Robert M.; Roxas, Pearl Marie C. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)This study aimed to find out the psychosocial effects of post-employment on the OFWs, as well as how they would reintegrate themselves to their respective families and communities. Thirty five respondents, 23 female and 12 male, were selected through convenience sampling. The respondents were residents of Leon, Iloilo. Each has worked abroad for at least 5 years, is married, and has children. The findings did not support the idea that labor migration affects primarily the relationship of the migrant workers to their family and community. The respondents remained close to their family despite being away from them for quite a time. Their reintegration to community was relatively easy despite being unaware of the reintegration programs of the governmentItem The dynamics in the patterns and changes of party affiliation of municipal candidates in the last three local elections in Barotac Nuevo, IloiloBraña, Lenirose A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)This is a descriptive study on the party affiliation of municipal candidates in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo. More specifically, this study attempted to determine the relevance of party affiliation and to analyse the dynamics in the patterns and changes of party affiliation of municipal candidates. A personal interview was conducted to a sample of informants. The study reveals that the relevance of party affiliation is mostly for convenience, organized campaign programs and financial support; the personality-oriented politics dominated the political arena of Barotac Nuevo that nobody can influence the victory of a candidate but his own self; that municipal candidates stay in the same political party because of personal relationships, convenience, a good leadership and it is an administration party; that the change of party affiliation was caused by the candidates’ ambition to hold public office, to progress in their political career, personal grudges and discontentment of other party-mates and convenience; that what greatly influenced the candidates to win is their personality and not on whether they remain or change their party affiliation; and that it is difficult to run independently if the candidate lacks the money, the fame and the personality to meet the demands of the voters.Item Organizational climate and levels of job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo CityBragancia, Imee Grace E.; Vergara, Catherine Joy C. (2004-03)This correlational study aimed to find out whether organizational climate has a significant relationship on job burnout among nurses in selected private and public hospitals in Iloilo City. A total of 44 respondents participated in the study. Thirty-two (32) nurses came from private hospitals, namely Iloilo Doctor’s Hospital and Iloilo Mission Hospital. While 12 nurses came from West Visayas State University Medical Center, which is a public hospital. The Work Climate Questionnaire by Deci (2000) and the Maslach Burnout Inventory by Maslach (1981) were utilized for data gathering. Generally, results revealed that the higher the nurses perceived autonomy support the lower their degree of burnout in emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales. However, while private and public hospital nurses were satisfied with the autonomy support provided by their supervisors, they still reported a lack of personal accomplishment. The researchers recommend that future research should be done on correlates of personal and organizational factors on nurse burnout.Item Reproductive health awareness, problems, and health seeking practices of couples in fishing households in Sapian, CapizBonitillo, Sunshine Mae B.; Galapin, Danilyn A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)The study sought to examine the reproductive health knowledge, problems and healthseeking practices of selected couples aged 15-49. Forty-six (46) couples served as respondents of the study. This study hypothesized that: 1) couples in fishing households reproductive health knowledge; 2) Couples in fishing households have numerous number of reported reproductive health problems; and 3) couples in fishing households have traditional health seeking practices. The Likert type of test, and open-ended questions were utilized for data gathering. The frequency, percentage distribution and average mean were used as a tool for analysis. The result show that couples in fishing households, have high level of reproductive health awareness. Female respondents in particular are aware of their reproductive health rights, birth control methods, and family planning than male respondents. In addition, the result reveals that the respondents have experienced several cases of reproductive health problems. However, they did not often seek medical attention. Instead, the respondents just visit the barangay health center for birth control supply and medicine for some ailments.
