Item The politics of indigeneity: The responses of Brgy. Latazon, Laua-an and Brgy. Igsoro, Bugasong in Antique following their response to indigenous identificationBobillo, Ariane Joy S.; Labitan, Jo Ann S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)Brgy. Latazon, Laua-an and Brgy. Igsoro, Bugasong in Antique were found to be indigenous communities in 2008 through a Field-based Investigation conducted by the Philippine National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP). These findings were prompted by a proposed Hydro-power project in both localities that cannot be pursued unless the Commission certifies that the areas involved do not come within ancestral domain. As a response to external identification, changes occurred in community dynamics when Brgy. Latazon accepted the indigenous identity, while Brgy. Igsoro resisted. This study explores the differential responses of the two barangays and the changes that followed. Through structured key-informant interviews, findings revealed that the community’s acceptance or resistance to indigenous identification was due to external ascription and their knowledge of the benefits or disadvantages of the power plant project.Item Utang na loob: The Ilonggo experienceBaldo, Jezzebelle T.; Quirante, Rachel Joy A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)This study aimed to investigate the construct of utang na loob from the Ilonggo perspective and to distinguish the Filipino concept of utang na loob from Trivers’ model of reciprocal altruism. This research is an exploratory study which made use of focus group discussion for data collection. The data was analyzed using category pattern analysis. Based on the results, utang na loob in the Ilonggo perspective is utang na kabalaslan. Its process is parallel but not equivalent to utang na loob in the Kapwa perspective and partly in reciprocal altruism. However, differences lie in the concept, construct, dimensions and repayment. Also, utang na loob in Kapwa differs with reciprocal altruism in terms of reason for helping, repayment and extent of the process.Item An assessment of LGU-NGO-PO partnership in establishment of the Kalibo save the mangrove (Kasama) project in barangayAtienza, Aprille Danily C.; Quioyo, Chloe F. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-03)Fifteen (15) KASAMA members of the original beneficiaries of the Kalibo Save the Mangrove Project were interviewed for this study. The existence of poverty as a result of environmental degradation pushed the three main stakeholders, namely, the LGU of Kalibo, the USWAG Development Foundation, Inc., and the KASAMA Association to reforest 10 hectares of mangrove in the 1990s. The study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of the project through livelihood development, people’s participation, and sustainable development. It also seeks to describe the factors that led to the partnership as well as the different issues and concerns of the stakeholders in managing the project. A survey and key informant interviews were conducted to gather the necessary data. Results show that there was no genuine organizing involved in the project implementation. Respondents and informants share their insights on project implementation and recommendations for its improvement
