Cadiao, Juna Mae B.; Itona, Mitzi Grace H. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2004-03)
This study looked into the role of PPCRV as a civil society group in promoting social capital by providing substantive knowledge about importance of electoral exercise to democracy, civic duties, and nurturing social relationships. Among the activities of PPCRV are voter’s education, voter’s assistance and poll watching. Of these activities, most members focused more intensively on voter’s education. The members registered over all high levels of social capital. However, trust in the organization and its rules registered high level of approval compared to trust on other members. Cooperation with members in observing organization rules registered higher levels of approval compared to cooperation among members beyond organization rules. Association based on organization is higher compared to association among members beyond organization. Generally, PPCRV has generated a high level of social capital. This high level of social capital prompts members to work steadfastly even in the presence of transportation, financial and logistics constraints. This study examined social capital by surveying thirty-five (35) PPCRV members in Igbaras.

Political efficacy and political participation as influenced by the kind of work setting of organizations and socio-economic profile of employees: A case study on employees working in centralize and decentralize work settings
Cadelina, Angelita L.; Nakar, Janessa Mae E. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)
Political efficacy and political participation are considered as essential conditions for democracy to thrive and are signs of political health. Many studies on the democratization processes focus on the dynamics of these two concepts in order to know the factors on which these two are dependent on. This study attempts to look on several factors that affect an individuals’ political efficacy and political participation. Some of the variables of socio-economic profile such as age, gender, civil status, and educational attainment were considered in this study as factors that maybe significant to an individuals’ political efficacy and political participation. Results of previous studies showed that the higher the socio-economic status, the higher is one’s level of political efficacy and political participation. Another factor considered in this study was the work setting of individuals, namely, the centralized or decentralized work environment. Pateman (1970) and colleagues argued that democratized industrial authority structures require workers to develop skills and resources necessary for participation in political life beyond the workplace while centralized organizations socializes employees to passivity and political apathy. With these two different conditions, they claimed that employees within decentralized organizations are more likely to have a higher level of political efficacy and political participation compared to those in centralized work settings. However, results of this study showed that the profile of the respondents does not have any relationship on their level of political efficacy and political participation. Only age and political efficacy are correlated. In addition, the result was not consistent with the argument of Pateman. The result of the study showed that respondent employees from centralized and decentralized organization both have a relatively medium-high level of political efficacy and political participation. This simply shows that despite the autocratic structure of decision-making, there are still some instances present in centralized organizations that could also provide some venues for employees to increase their feeling of personal confidence and efficacy which can consequently influence their level of political efficacy and political participation.

Political barter: A study of Makati City's emergency cash relief program and its link to local government legitimacy and incumbent electoral support
Bedonia, Roberto S., III (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)
Makati City ramped its pandemic response by implementing its own “Maka-Tulong 5K” cash assistance to its citizens. Although there are extant studies on the political dimension of cash assistance, the proliferation of this one-time provision merits further understanding. The research looked at the relationship between the benefeciaries’ perceived effects of the assistance and their local government’s legitimacy. It also examined the link between assistance received and prospective vote for the incumbent mayor in the 2022 elections. Using a descriptive research design and employing a structured questionnaire to the Slovin-sampled population (n=100) of citizenbeneficiaries, it is argued that positive perceived effects also confer high levels of local government legitimacy. However, facilitation of legitimacy by the assistance received is only at a moderate level as driven by the proximity of the cash effects with respondents’ needs. Moreover, the cash assistance could only potentially deliver incumbent votes. These results and findings were consolidated under ‘the system’s justification theory’ proposing that respondents had the motivation to provide legitimacy due mainly to the Makati government’s well-regarded pandemic response but such legitimation was regulated by the interface of situational-dispositional contextual factors.

Public opinion towards the roles of the military in politics
Bacaoco, Jeemon Rey A.; Tabernilla, Piologo A., II (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-04)
The study has 200 respondents all from Iloilo City, randomly selected according to population in all six districts. The respondents were given a four-category questionnaire to answer that detailed in value statements the military’s roles: traditional roles of the military, non traditional roles of the military, former military in politics and military and society. This paper obtained the public’s opinion through their answers in the questionnaire that employed a Likert-Scale that ranges from 1 as strongly disagree, 2 as disagree, 3 as neutral, 4 as agree and 5 as strongly agree. The result showed that the public disagrees with the military’s participation in politics as shown in their disagreements with the military taking over in times of presidential vacancy with 80.5 percent in the disagree scale and in former military personnel entering into politics with 80 percent on the disagree scale. But in terms of the non — traditional roles of the military, the public agrees with them, like they largely agree with the traditional ones, not seeing them as opportunities for roles in politics.

Comparative study of democratic action in the Facebook accounts of Akbayan, Bayan Muna and Partido ng Mangagawa in the 2010 pre-elections, election and post-election periods
Baban, Ivy B.; Sia, Christine Marie M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)
Facebook as a social networking site offers an arena where users can engage in political discussions. Facebook is also increasingly becoming an important venue for political socialization and for gathering and sharing political knowledge among its users. For political parties in particular, Facebook is a useful tool in forwarding its agenda and generating interest among followers. This paper examined the volume, density and quality of democratic action, categorized into information sharing, public opinion and public discourse, among users of the Facebook accounts of Akbayan, Bayan Muna and Partido ng Manggagawa political parties before, during and after the 2010 elections. The level of information sharing in the Facebook accounts depicted a downward fashion, having only the greatest outlay of data in the pre-election period. Public opinion elicited the least number of participation with the election period as the lone impetus for opiniongiving. Public discussion in Facebook political party pages was present. However, the extent to which these discussions have been forwarded was limited. The discussions also tended to focus on issues that the parties care about but generating little debate and few participants. The presence of information-sharing is high indicating that initiation of public discussion is primarily administrator-driven. Public opinion lagged behind information sharing implying that public discussion is basically affected by the bias in information sharing. Overall, Facebook political party pages have not yet reached the level of interaction that entails a wider audience participating in enlightened discussions.

Youth perception towards EDSA II and their willingness to participate in political activities
Ablanida, Ligaya A.; Deadio, Dyan S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)
This study is a correlational study on the Perceptions of the Youth towards EDSA II and their Willingness to Participate in Political Activities. The study was conducted among one hundred fifty-three (153) randomly selected third year and fourth year high school students from Central Philippine University and West Visayas State University. The results of the study showed that the youth have a positive perception towards EDSA II and have a high level of willingness to participate in political activities. There is a linear relationship between youth perception and willingness. Results revealed that factors such as sex, religion and school orientation do not influence youth perception towards EDSA II. The study concludes that there is indeed a relationship between the youth perception towards EDSA II and their willingness to participate in political activities. However, the factors identified in this study do not have a bearing on youth perception towards EDSA II. The researchers recommend further studies should be conducted, which involved the participation of youth in any governmental matters.

Andrada, Ed Nathan; Torrijos, Richelle Paul (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-04)
This is the study on the political career of Romulo C. Cabana, a three-term municipal mayor of Leon, Iloilo (1992-2001). The objectives of the study were: to trace Romulo Cabana’s ascendancy as the top executive of the Municipality of Leon, which includes his inherent qualities, political affiliations, socio-economic position, educational background and strategies that led to his election as mayor; to assess Mayor Cabana’s political philosophies and leanings, and; to make a comparison between the programs of the Municipal Government and what were accomplished. To achieve these objectives, the researchers used the following methods: an archival research, which includes materials contained in the different agencies of the local government, and the local library of the Municipality of Leon; interview with key informants, which includes the mayor himself and a number of local constituents who have the knowledge and experience associating with Mayor Cabana. The researchers have found out, that as a political leader, Romulo Cabana, has inherent qualities and characteristics that led his career to a three-term mayor of the Municipality of Leon. He has the willingness to serve his constituents, especially those who are less fortunate in the society. His socio-economic background had further induced and strengthened his cause for the “masa” or the ordinary people. Mayor Cabana’s political career had once proved that, political strategies and affiliations were secondary if not only to serve as a background to public service and societal responsibilities. With his career he also proved that experience and practicability is more worth than the highest educational attainment or status. With his unique political repertoire and humanistic charisma, many of his constituents in Leon had described him as the most “loved,” and the most respected municipal mayor in Leon to date. And with few critics on the opposite side, Mayor Cabana did his job steadfastly with a vision for growth and development of the Municipality of Leon.
