A comparative study on the perceived work stress, work-related stressors, and coping strategies of fish vendors in Antique
Cabigunda, Greshanne J.; Moquera, Mabelle M. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2024-07)
Fish vending is a common source of income in Antique, Philippines. Fish vendors are classified into two vendor groups: formal vendors who sell inside public markets and informal vendors who sell their products on the streets. Research shows that these groups encounter varied work experiences given their differing working conditions. However, existing research is not enough to describe their stressful work experiences as well as their coping strategies. Thus, this research study aimed to describe and compare the work-related stress of fish vendor groups in Antique and how they cope with it. To address these, a convergent parallel mixed methods design was used. A total of 40 fish vendors with a mean age of 44.70 years, classified as formal (20) and informal (20), served as respondents. Data were gathered using a one-on-one interview with a question guide and a modified survey instrument for levels of perceived work stress (LPWS). Mann-Whitney U analysis revealed no significant difference between the overall LPWS of both groups (W= 4272.50, p>0.05). However, per dimension analysis of results showed a significant difference in the physical work environment dimension (W= 85.50, p<0.001). Conceptual content analysis also indicated that work-related stressors and coping strategies are relatively different between vendor groups and across dimensions. The findings of this research suggest that the physical work environment is a significant dimension that differentiates fish vendor groups’ levels and sources of work stress. Moreover, findings imply that social resources, especially among co-vendors, reduce LPWS.

Locus of control, resilience, and self-esteem of children of displaced workers
Bonilla, Krisna G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-03)
Displacement from work has been considered to be influential not only to workers themselves but also to their families, especially their children. This study focused on three particular facets of personality of children of displaced workers: locus of control, resilience, and self-esteem which were examined using the CNSIE scale, Ego Resiliency Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and an interview schedule. The study included 37 respondents (14 males, 23 females) aged 14-21 years old, who were children of displaced workers from Palawan. Based on the data gathered, it was found that majority of the respondents had external locus of control, high resilience, and low self-esteem. It was further deduced that parents’ displacement from work has an influence among their children’s personality development.

Utang na loob: The Ilonggo experience
Baldo, Jezzebelle T.; Quirante, Rachel Joy A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)
This study aimed to investigate the construct of utang na loob from the Ilonggo perspective and to distinguish the Filipino concept of utang na loob from Trivers’ model of reciprocal altruism. This research is an exploratory study which made use of focus group discussion for data collection. The data was analyzed using category pattern analysis. Based on the results, utang na loob in the Ilonggo perspective is utang na kabalaslan. Its process is parallel but not equivalent to utang na loob in the Kapwa perspective and partly in reciprocal altruism. However, differences lie in the concept, construct, dimensions and repayment. Also, utang na loob in Kapwa differs with reciprocal altruism in terms of reason for helping, repayment and extent of the process.

Realignment of roles, attachment styles in family relationships and reassessment of values of overseas Filipino worker returnees in Tigbauan, Iloilo
Bacero, Mon Ritchie Y.; Benosa, Aaron Alden O. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2007-03)
The study was conducted to find out the roles and values change and adjustments in the family relationships undergone by an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) returnee during his post-employment. Thirty (30) OFW returnees from chosen Barangays in Tigbauan, Iloilo participated in answering the Traditional Marital Role Questionnaire, Experience in Close Relationships-Revised (ECR-R) Questionnaire, and an interview guide for the assessment of their Filipino Values and Ideals. Results show that most of the traditional marital roles are not exclusive anymore to one spouse, rather done by both. Good relationship based on trust was found among majority of the respondents since they are securely-attached to their families. Positive values change in respect became apparent for some OFWs who alleviated the family’s situation.

Performativity and subjectivities: A Foucauldian discourse analysis of Pasaway COVID-19 pandemic
Azarcon, Cherie Izzy; Guadaña, Zennia Grace (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-05)
This study utilized Foucauldian Discourse Analysis to explore the different constructions of pasaway in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. Nine street vendors located around Iloilo City who do not have permanent workspaces were interviewed and their answers served as the text for the analysis. The results showed that their constructions were embedded in five wider discourses: 1) Moral Discourse, 2) Cultural Discourse, 3) Spatial and Temporal Discourse, 4) Economic Discourse, and 5) Power Discourse. Embedded within these five discourses are the different action orientations, positionings, practices, and subjectivities that are informed by the varied constructions of street vendors of the discursive object pasaway in the context of the C0V1D-19 pandemic. The findings also showed that the discourses on the discursive object pasaway are context-specific, performative, and consequential. These are all discussed in relation to social change.

Drivers' helping behavior towards pedestrians: The role of awareness, responsibility, and personal norms
Alvero, Twinkle B.; Matondo, Jirah P. (Division of BSocial Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2016-05)
The effects of individual's norms, consequences and responsibilities on helping behavior were tested using the Norm Activation Theory. A 2x2x2 within—subjects design utilizing the scenario based approach developed by Naumann (2004) was participated by twenty-five (n=25) company drivers, and the scores obtained were measured using Helping Attitude Scale (Nickell, 1998). Interviews were conducted to further understand and explain key information about participants. Results showed that positive personal norms and higher recognition of responsibility affected helping behavior but not awareness of consequences. However, no interaction effect was observed. Therefore, the study lends partial support to the theory. Implication points that companies and LTO must incorporate and promote personal norm enhancement and recognition of responsibility within their team building programs and trainings.
