    The portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna

    This study deals with gender analysis on the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. Its aims to (1) identify the role of women portrayed in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, (2) to describe the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna, and (3) to explain the portrayal of violence against women in the films made by Carlos Siguion Reyna. The twelve films of Carlos Siguion Reyna were briefly presented to aid for further understanding of the study. Different roles of women portrayed in the films were enumerated and were explained briefly into their portrayal. Violence against women was categorized into physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Finally, a gender analysis was used to assess the portrayal of violence against women in the films of Carlos Siguion Reyna. In this study, data were gathered through self-analysis of the ten films of Carlos Siguion Reyna with the help of some film reviews of his films. Violence against women is evident in the films of director and it comes in many forms, be it physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Patriarchy, women seen as sex object are some of the factors that contributed to the violence toward women and it happens in most social groups and all income levels. The ideas and images of women in reality are reinforced in the mass media on which people model their behavior and attitudes. Thus, indeed there is a relationship between the social condition of women in reality and the portrayal of violence against women in films.

    Politics in rice producing irrigated area in Northeastern Iloilo (Barotac Nuevo-Pototan Area)

    This research project is an exploratory study which determines the power relations among individuals, groups, groupings and entities involved in rice production process in the rice producing irrigated area of Northeastern Iloilo. This study was conducted in the Barangays of Tabucan and Cabilauan of Barotac Nuevo and Tuburan and Tomcon Ilaud of Pototan using interviews with respondents and selected key informants and secondary data taken from the records of the Municipal Agrarian Reform Office, local government units, Philippine National Police blotter and farmers' organization of the locale of the study as sources of information of this research project. It was found out that: (1) there is a three level class structure in the locale of the study; (2) the three level class structure leads to a corresponding three level power relations among individuals inside the realm of rice production process; (3) the tenurial arrangements solely determines the distribution of productivity among individuals and entities involve in rice production and (4) the tenants are biggest class of exploiters in the production process brought about by the widespread practice of sub- tenurial arrangement-pamorsyento which makes the tenants "ersatz landlord" and exploiters of the nagapamorsyento-farm laborer. Tracing the flow of politics in rice producing irrigated area, it was found that the tenurial arrangement gives shape to the power relations in the locale of the study.

    An assessment of the fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo, 1992-1998

    This research project is an assessment of the fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo. The study covers the fourteen (14) coastal municipalities of the Province namely; the Municipality of Anilao, Banate, Barotac Nuevo, Barotac Viejo, Batad, Carles, Concepcion, Dumangas, Estancia, Miag- ao, Oton, San Dionisio, San Joaquin and Tigbauan. The primary data were taken from the various municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities under study, and the national fishery policies (RA 7160, PD 704, RA 8550). The researchers also employed field interviews with selected fisherfolk leaders as a source of first hand information concerning the recent situation of the fishery industry in their respective municipalities. It was found that: (1) the fishery industry in the Province of Iloilo is facing problems on overexploitation, overfishing, pollution, and habitat destruction; (2) the primary concern of the over-all policy mosaic for the fishery industry is the rehabilitation and protection of the coastal environment, the limitation of access to fishery resources comes as the secondary concern, while the protection of the rights of municipal fisherfolk appears in a very limited number of promulgations only; (3) generally the provisions in the over-all policy mosaic is consistent and complimentary, both vis-a-vis the national fishery policies and within their respective municipal fishery ordinances where the provisions belongs. Assessing the municipal fishery ordinances of the different coastal municipalities in the Province of Iloilo, it was found that the goal of the over-all policy mosaic is the promotion of sustainable development for the fishery industry so as to achieve food security in terms of fish.

    The multiplicity of jobs of the urban-poor breadwinning fathers in Iloilo City

    The worsening socio-economic condition of the society serve as a reason why the urban-poor breadwinning fathers are engaging in the multiplicity of jobs. It is treated by the breadwinning fathers as a means for them in satisfying the basic needs of the family. It is also necessary to consider proper time management to avoid overlapping of activities and time constraints. The study of the multiplicity of jobs of the urban-poor breadwinning fathers in Iloilo City revolves in the description of the socio-economic condition of the families of the urban-poor breadwinning fathers who have multiple jobs in Iloilo City. It is also concern in determining the different kinds of jobs these urban-poor breadwinning fathers are engaged in as well as the reasons why they engage in such multiplicity of jobs. Finally, the last that is very necessary is the analysis of how they manage their time in each of their jobs and their personal activities.
