    The nature of social support in an intergenerational Ilonggo family in a fishing community

    Nuclear family has been the common type of family in the society in the past but as time passed by, different forms of family emerged as well as family structure and the dynamics of the family have been changing. This study focused on the nature of social support in an intergenerational Ilonggo family specifically in fishing community. It discussed the different types of support, such as financial, emotional, and instrumental, exchanged among the family members and illustrated each patterns of support through the use of sociometry for the analysis of data gathered. This study also aimed to know whether there is a connection between the degrees of interaction to the social support exchanged. An intergenerational family household was purposively selected in Miagao, Iloilo which served as a case study. Each family member was asked to evaluate other family members individually through questionnaires. The result showed that the norms and the gender roles play an important part in the exchange of social support of the Filipino family members including their role obligations as well as the degree of interaction do not dictate the support given and received by the family members.

    Portrayals of women and feminist issues on feminist -themed Filipino movies: A content analysis

    This descriptive study analyzed two feminist-themed movies in the Philippines in terms of their portrayals of women and issues concerning women. Specifically, this study sought to examine how women were portrayed in the selected movies using (1) characterlevel analysis, which included observation of personal characteristics, appearances, and gender roles portrayed by the female characters); and, (2) scene-level analysis, which identified issues of sexualization, subordination, underrepresentation, violence, and acts of empowerment. This study also explored how these portrayals of women and feminist issues relate to the social realities of the films’ milieu. The findings revealed that there were some disparities between Sister Stella L. and Crying Ladies in terms of their portrayal of female characters, most notably in personal appearances and clothing. There were significant presentations of issues concerning women such as sexualization, underrepresentation, subordination, and violence. Female characters in both films were observed to have participated in traditional gender roles as well as in community politics and productive roles. These participation of women in non-traditional feminine roles in the films confirmed that female characters are empowered specifically in welfare, access, conscientization, participation, and control.

    When parents are absent: A study on the role of grandmothers in child rearing

    This study examined the role of the grandmothers in a caregiving role. Role theory was used as a framework to guide this qualitative study. Four grandmothers who provided care for their grandchildren were interviewed. The result showed that grandmothers’ role had shifted from a traditional role to a grandmother caregiver role. As a consequence, grandmothers experienced stress, challenges, on-time or off-time role, life changes, and at the same time positive experiences. They experienced stress, challenges, and difficulties due to the role timing and role strain which hindered them to perform their role successfully. This research also showed that grandmothers, despite their old age, play a major role in child rearing especially when the parents of the children were absent.
