    Conservation values of selected Bacolod City High School students for coral reefs in Sagay Marine Reserve, Negros Occidental

    Most studies on economic valuation take household heads as respondents since they earn money for the family and usually make most of the decisions. Other sectors of the society, especially the students or members of the youth, are rarely involved in these kinds of studies. Contrary to popular practices, this study considered the youth, particularly high school students, as the respondents of the survey. Through stratified and systematic random sampling, 400 respondents were chosen from five public high schools. Data was gathered from 80 students per school through a group administered survey. A protocol for a group-administered survey was constructed in order to ensure that data is collected in an unbiased, organized and systematic way. The willingness-to-pay of students in public high schools in Bacolod City for the conservation of the coral reefs in Sagay Marine Reserve (SMR) amounted to Php 3,156,894.02, per month. The selected mode of payment was through student government collection. The top reasons for their decision to pay were because of existence values, altruistic motive, and bequest value. Some of them were not willing to pay because they lacked funds, they did not trust the government, and/or they believe that the residents in coastal areas were the main reason why the resource is depleting. The factors that affected the students’ willingness-to-pay were price bid, household size, monthly income and perceived importance. This study found that high school students can contribute resources either in money or in-kind, and in fact the monetary WTP was within their capacity and cash received. This study may be significant to the youth by amplifying their roles in the conservation of natural resources. The methods employed in this study may also benefit future researchers and policy implementers.

    Value chain analysis of Lampirong (Placuna placenta) in Oton, Iloilo

    Lampirong (Placuna placenta) is a highly valued bivalve in the Philippines due to its economic value. It was once abundant in Oton and was overexploited, leading to its stock depletion. Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center’s (SEAFDEC) efforts to enhance the stock in Oton resulted in the resurgence of lampirong stock and industry. The lack of transparency in the lampirong industry and studies on the linkages between the actors in the lampirong business have gotten little to no attention following the resurgence of lampirong and the recovery of the shell craft industry after the depletion. A Value Chain Analysis (VCA) was conducted to evaluate the overall performance of the local lampirong industry following the stock enhancement. Using an interview schedule, the researchers gathered primary data from a total of 20 study participants. They were interviewed in the month of May and were grouped according to the tasks they carried out. The biggest player of the chain turned out to be the Institutional Buyers as they are the bulk buyers and sellers of lampirong in the market. The industry resembles a competitive market as the majority of participants were price takers and the products are homogenous. As the lampirong transforms from raw to processed forms, its net added value increases as it goes through the various actors. Lampirong processing incurred the highest cost but also generated the highest value-added. Diving lampirong was performed by men while processing and trading were dominated by women.

    Wine production from different species of seaweed

    This study specifically aimed to test and compare the wine production of Gracilaria verrucosa, Kappaphycus alvarezii, and Kappaphycus striatum based on the physicochemical evaluation. The best seaweed wine produced was also determined through sensory evaluation. The samples underwent a 28-day fermentation period using Saccharomyces cerevisiae 2185 under room temperature at a pH of 3.0 and sugar content of 30%. Based on the physicochemical parameters, Gracilaria verrucosa was the best wine—high percentage of alcohol content, stable pH during the entire fermentation period, sweet taste of the wine owing to the high residual sugar, high amount of percent (%) TA without affecting the taste of the sample, clarity of the wine product after fermentation owing to the low total suspended solids. Gracilaria verrucosa also produced the best seaweed wine based on sensory evaluation.

    Diversity and population structure of sea cucumber species in Taklong Island Marine Reserve, Guimaras

    The increasing demand of sea cucumbers in the market leads to the global exploitation of this animal. Marine reserve protects the marine biodiversity and teaches the people in the communities to manage their marine resources wisely. This study examined the diversity, species characteristics and population structure of sea cucumbers in five sites around Taklong Island Marine Reserve namely, Binabaywan, Kalirohan, south side of 2nd sandbar, north side of 2nd sandbar and Tarakpan. The species composition and abundance were determined through transect walks and plot along transects. Sea cucumber density was estimated by randomly positioned 1 square meter plots in each site. There were 11 sea cucumber species found. There were 9 species under Order Aspidochirota all in 1 Family Holothuriidae and 2 species in Order Apodida in 1 Family Synaptidae. A total of 64 individuals were sampled in 5 sites. The most widespread and the dominant species was the non-commercially valuable Synapta maculata (n = 32) followed by the low-value Holothuria pulla (n = 9) and Holothuria atra (n = 8). Kalirohan had the most number of species (Σs = 6) and individuals of sea cucumbers. The low number of holothurian species encountered in the Marine Reserve might be due to the limited sites surveyed, cryptic behaviour of the species and the possibility of poaching in the area.

    Trade-off between agricultural emissions and rice production of select Southeast Asian countries: an empirical analysis using the EKC hypothesis

    Southeast Asia has made remarkable progress in intensifying its rice production, which increased the region’s greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). This study examines the validity of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis and the effects of rice production on GHG emissions in the six major rice-producing Southeast Asian countries, namely: Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam for the period 1970 to 2020 using secondary, annual time-series data from Our World in Data and FAOSTAT. Statistical analyses were conducted using the Mann-Kendall Test, Dickey- Fuller and Phillips-Perron Unit Root Tests, the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) Bounds Test, and the Johansen Cointegration Test. An unrestricted error correction model (UECM) and Vector Error Correction Models (VECM) were then estimated. Diagnostic tests were also employed, and the turning points for EKC-conforming countries were calculated. The results confirmed the EKC hypothesis for Indonesia (carbon dioxide emissions) and the Philippines (both carbon dioxide and methane emissions). The Philippines had long achieved the turning point, while Indonesia had not. Rice production had a directly-proportional relationship with GHG emissions as it increased carbon dioxide emissions and decreased methane emissions for Indonesia. It decreased the amount of carbon dioxide emissions produced in the atmosphere for Indonesia and the Philippines and methane emissions for the Philippines and Thailand. In contrast, rice production increased the amount of carbon dioxide emissions in Thailand and methane emissions in Indonesia.

    Socio-economic impact of TV product advertisements to the taste and preference and level of concumption of University of the Philippines-Visayas' College of Arts and Sciences' students

    The principal purpose of this paper is to uncover the advertising-consumption relationship. In view of this, the following research objectives were pursued: (1) determination of the level of exposure, awareness and knowledge of college students towards TV product advertisements, (2) identification of the different TV product advertisements’ elements affecting the taste and preference of college students, (3) determination of the effects of TV product advertisements to the taste and preference of college students, (4) verification if TV product advertisement is a significant factor affecting the level of consumption of college students and (5) identification of other significant factors affecting the consumption levels of college students. Qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed through logistic and linear regression method. The study was carried out by administering questionnaires among 120 college students. The researcher found out that the respondents generally have low exposure but relatively high level of awareness and knowledge to TV products advertisements. Moreover, the researcher found out that storyline/theme, actor/actress/models and punch line/dialogue ranked the first three highly significant elements affecting the respondents taste and preference. Consequently, the researcher determined that an increase in the level of awareness and knowledge of the respondents increases their taste and preference increases as well. Lastly, by logistic regression the researcher found out that for every unit increase in the number of hours of watching TV, the chance of consuming toothpaste or shampoo is increased by 615.2%. On the other hand, by linear regression, taste and preference was found to be significantly affecting consumption both for advertised shampoo and toothpaste products.
