Item A case analysis of the rehabilitation programs of the Municipality of Pavia, Iloilo after typhoon FrankAlvarado, Rejay Y.; Sodusta, Russell P. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-05)This undergraduate research entitled A Case Analysis of the Rehabilitation Programs of the Municipality of Pavia, Iloilo after Typhoon Frank presents the different rehabilitation programs implemented by the Local Government of Pavia and their effects to the people of the said municipality. Using three different methods of data gathering and data triangulation, the researchers found out that the LGU of Pavia implemented a number of rehabilitation programs which include human, structural and livelihood rehabilitation. Results, however, show that there is an information gap between the implementers and the receiving end since the people barely recognize or are aware of, or are dissatisfied with the efforts and the performance of the LGU. The results also highlight some of the factors that lead to the vulnerability of the Municipality of Pavia to natural hazards. The analysis, which uses Piers Blaikie’s Release of Pressures Model, entails the ways by which the vulnerabilities of the municipality will be solved and eventually progress to safety. The researchers’ recommendations include suggestions for improvement based on the thematic areas of the Hyogo Framework for Action: governance; risk assessment; knowledge and information; risk management and vulnerability reduction, and, disaster preparedness and response.Item A comparative study on intervention policies anitiatives against human trafficking for sex in Iloilo City and Boracay, Malay, AklanBerano, Erlie R.; Bolinas, Nicollete A. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)Human trafficking is considered as one of the most rampant and pervasive crime because of its transnational nature. The increasing statistics of human trafficking cases is alarming thus the call for a more stable and strong intervention policies and initiatives against human trafficking. Our study pondered on the existing intervention policies and initiatives against human trafficking focusing on sexual exploitation. The main argument of this study rests on the following questions. First, what are the existing intervention policies and initiatives against human trafficking for sex. Second, on whether and how identified challenges such as victim identification, public awareness and underground transactions affect the implementation of the policies and programs. And lastly, how is the level of community participation despite the presence of existing challenges. The researchers employed a Process Theory Integration that entails to merge different theories from different discipline in order to interpret the data gathered. The different theories used by the researchers are Economic Theory to explain the presence of underground transactions Prospect theory to give details on public awareness and Consent Theory to elucidate on the topic of victim identification. Data gathering in this study ranged from the use of secondary data, community profiling, key informant interviews and participant observation. The observed findings show that the implementation of the existing policies and programs against human trafficking are greatly affected by the identified challenges. Furthermore, there is low level of conununity participation however the citizens are willing to help in tire implementation process. The actors that are involved in combating human trafficking should review the policies for possible loopholes and strictly implement the ordinances and programsItem A comparative study on the implementation of social amelioration program under Bayanihan 1 and 2 in Iloilo City and Davao City, PhilippinesAyag, Edgar Maverick C., II; Basilan, Glyngie Erika S. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2022-06)To address the economic problems posed by the pandemic, the Philippine government institutionalized two Bayanihan laws to issue cash assistance to the affected families through the Social Amelioration Program (SAP). This study outlined the similarities and differences in the SAP implementation under Bayanihan 1 and 2 of Iloilo City and Davao City through a descriptive research design, particularly their beneficiary selection and accountability efforts. The results of this study suggest divergences in the actors involved and their roles in the implementation, the approaches and behaviors of the city mayors, and the numerous changes in the guidelines set by the national government caused such similarities and differences. Inadequate budget forwarded by the national government produced gaps in personnel complement to cover beneficiary selection and accountability efforts, which were filled up by local government resources. The results of the study are consistent with the claim of the Institutionalist Theory of Public Policy that the actors involved in the institutions, as well as their roles and arrangements, dictate the outcomes of policies. In addition, they are also consistent with the claim of the Rational Choice Theory that actors in the policy arena try to maximize their utility to achieve their goals.Item A comparative study on the political awareness and level of trust to the government in relation to the level of political participation of in-school and out-of-school youths in Miag-ao, IloiloBaylosis, Jericho Alain G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2005-03)This study sought to determine, compare, and analyze the political awareness and the level of trust to the government in relation to the level of political participation of the inschool and out-of-school youth in Miag-ao, Iloilo. Specifically the study tried to identify the political awareness of both in- school and out- of- school youth and the factors that influence their political awareness. It likewise sought to determine the differences in the political awareness, level of trust to the government, and level of political participation of both in- school and out- of- school youth. The study also sought to find out if the level of trust to the government affects the level of political participation of the respondents. One- hundred three (103) in- school youth were selected by simple random sampling from Miag-ao National High School and twenty- one (21) out- of- school youth were selected by employing the snowball sampling from the barangays that compose the poblacion area of the municipality of Miag-ao served as the respondents of the study. Likert scale was used to measure the respondents’ level of trust to the government and level of political participation. On the other hand, a “yes- no scale” was used to measure the political awareness of both respondents. The Mann-Witney Non Parametric test and the Chi-square test were used to analyze the results of the study. Research results showed that age does not affect the political awareness of the respondents but on the other hand, results of the study also showed that sex and educational attainment affect the respondents’ political awareness and that these two factors serve as a determinant of political awareness Comparing the results of both in- school and out- of- school youth showed both sets of respondents are politically aware, for their averages fall above the 50% line but the in-school youth showed a higher level of political awareness as compared to the out-of-school youth. In terms on their level of trust to the government, both respondents are undecided if they trust the government. Research results from the level of political participation of the in-school and out-of-school youth showed that both respondents agree that the youth should be politically participate. Lastly, the results of the study showed that the respondents’ level of trust to the government does not affect their level of political participationItem A study of the political efficacy and political participation of women in Guimbal, IloiloAcerbo, Ella Luna S.; Gasapo, Griselle L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2001-04)This is a study of the political efficacy and political participation of women in Guimbal Iloilo The study has the following objectives, 1) to measure the level of political efficacy of the selected registered women voter in Guimbal, Iloilo, 2) to analyze the effect of selected socioeconomic factors affecting the level of political efficacy selected registered women voters in Guimbal, Iloilo, specifically a) to determine the relationship between age and level of political efficacy; b) to determine the relationship between educational attainment and the level of political efficacy c) to determine the relationship between income and level of political efficacy and d) to determine the relationship between occupation and level of political, efficacy, lastly, the study aims to determine the relationship between political efficacy and participation of the selected registered women voters in the local politics in Guimbal, Iloilo. The study presents five hypotheses, which are there is no relationship between age and level of political efficacy; 2) there is no relationship between educational attainment and level of political efficacy, 3) there is no relationship between income and level of political efficacy; 4) there is no relationship between occupation and level of political efficacy, and lastly, there is no relationship between political efficacy and political 1 participation. The results of the study show that there is no relationship between participation, thus hypothesis 1 is accepted. Meanwhile, hypothesis 2 is rejected; that is, educational attainment have no relationship with political efficacy. This study shows that a college level of education have a relation to political efficacy. Hypothesis 3 is also rejected; that is, there is no relationship between income and political efficacy. This study reveals that the lowest income bracket P 10-999 have a high political efficacy, compared to the rest of the income brackets who indicate an average level of political efficacy. Hypothesis 4 also rejected; that is, there is no relationship between occupation and political efficacy. This study shows that formal and informal occupations have significant bearing on political efficacy. Meanwhile, hypothesis 5 is accepted; that is, there is no relationship between political efficacy and political participation. This study shows that women may feel highly politically efficacious towards the system; but this may not necessarily translate to high political participation or to a greater tendency to participate in politics. Women in Guimbal may have been affected by their political socialization or by the political events prior to the conduct of the study. Although they really have a high sense of political efficacy, the institution and the local norms limited their capacity to participate effectively in politics. Women have been taught to stay m their homes, to be good housewives, thus , limiting their role to the reproductive sphere. Political matters are not priorities for her, although these could directly or indirectly affect their lives, security, and well-being.Item An analysis of BMPM photojournalism and its impact to Negros Traditional JournalistsBastian, Liezel Margie Lou S.; Cabarles, Jodhie Mae A.; Idorot, Arnielyn Joanne L. (Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2014-04)This research is geared towards identifying the visual elements that make BMPM photojournalism as either a catalyst or a threat according to Negros traditional journalists, specifically in determining if the values required for traditional media to become newsworthy be likewise applied to Bayan Mo I-Patrol Mo (BMPM)'s photojournalism when comparatively analyzed. It assesses if Negros traditional journalists are in approval or disapproval of BMPM as a citizen journalism platform especially during Typhoon Yolanda. This study is carried out in order to further understand BMPM's implications, as a social-media based citizen journalism platform, to the society. A content analysis wherein Typhoon Yolanda-related BMPM photos submitted from November 8 up to December 8 are analyzed and a survey answered by Negros Press Club members selected through Systematic Random Sampling were conducted. Content analysis results showed that catalyst visual elements prevail more than its threat counterpart, signifying that traditional news values are dominantly applied in BMPM photos. On the other hand, survey results have shown that Negros traditional journalists viewed that BMPM photojournalism contains visual elements of threat. Furthermore, they disapproved BMPM as a citizen journalism platform because it can reduce the quality of journalism disseminated to the public due to the uncertainty of Bayan Patrollers' lack of formal background in journalism.Item An analysis of fiscal decentralization: The case of Cadiz City, Negros OccidentalBaynosa, Rogelita P.; Toque, Narciso R. (Division ofSocial Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)Decentralization has been an issue in the late twentieth century. Developing countries have shifted toward more decentralized forms of government that promises to change their political life in profound ways. The Philippines has decentralized its government through the enactment of the Local Government Code of 1991. This has brought changes to the Philippine governance. The code legislated the creation of local government units such as regions, provinces, cities, and municipalities with which the central government devolved its major power and authority. In this study, an attempt is made to discuss the issues and problems of fiscal decentralization in developing countries, specifically the Philippine experience. A review of the Cadiz City experience substantiates the discussion on decentralization. Taking the case of Cadiz City as a microcosm of the Philippine experience with decentralization as a whole and that of the developing world’s in much broader scale, this study presents an analysis of the realities of fiscal decentralization, which is the core of the devolution program in the Philippines. The data gathered show that although Cadiz City government had been granted the autonomy to manage its own affairs, it remains dependent on grants and allotments from the central government instead of maximizing the fiscal powers being devolved to it, specifically, its revenue-raising power. Moreover, the data on the local government’s allocation of its financial resources during the years 1997-2000 show that it has been efficient in terms of providing basic public goods and services to its constituents but not in terms of empowering the community people to participate in advocacy, decision-making, and other activities of local governance. The data also show that politics played a great role in the implementation of various development programs, projects, and activities.Item An examination of the role of the local government and non government organizations in the management of the Northwest Panay Peninsula low-elevated forestBayquin, Sheila M.; Solidum, Fervilynn L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)The study tries to examine the role of the Local Government Units (LGUs) and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) in the implementation of Philippine forest policy in Northwest Panay Peninsula Low-elevated Forest. The municipal government of Pandan, Antique collaborates with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to introduce community-based forest management. The NGOs on the other hand help in the sourcing of funds for forest conservation projects and of linking local communities with the market. The present study suggests that local government units, NGOs, and other external agents should have more clearly defined rules in forest resource management.Item Analysis and assessment of the performance of the Municipal Leadership and Governance Program (MLGP) partner municipalities in improving health outcomesAraneta, Francine Nicole M.; Bebita, Valerie Anne N.; Endoma, Vivienne F.; Estanda, Marvyn Kerziel A.; Gupeteo, Mary Pauline Kriszl E.; Lebosada , Billy John F.; Magsipoc, Karla Mae B.; Pabello, Kimberly T.; Samoro, Karmela Marie G.; Villaruel, Rigel Kent Q. (2016-05)The Zuellig Family Foundation through the Municipal Leadership and Governance Program (MLGP) aims to bridge the gap between the Filipinos and the promise of universal health care through the local health managers. They developed a local health scheme with focus on the World Health Organization’s six building blocks of health system so the country can achieve the Millennium Development Goals on health by 2015. However, there are still no available methods that can measure the success of health programs such as the MLGP. In order to address this issue, the researchers proposed to quantify and assess the health outcomes and the municipality performance. Heath outcomes are represented using secondary data provided by the MLGP municipalities on the performance indicators for MDGs for health. Municipality performance is quantified using a scoring system developed by the researchers based on the performance indicators assigned by the ZFF for each WHO building-block and significant improvement in municipality performance was found. The health data was analyzed by comparing the medians of yearly data using non- parametric/distribution-free sign tests. Among the health indicators with complete data for all 28 municipalities, significant difference in health outcomes was found in the data proportions of ratio of facility-based deliveries (FBD), ratio of births attended by births attended by skilled personnel (SBA), contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR), and proportion of fully immunized children (FIC). Maternal and infant mortality ratio, under-five mortality rates and malnutrition rate did not show any significant difference within the two-year intervention time span. Ratio of facility-based deliveries and ratio of births attended by skilled personnel showed significant positive correlations with health financing, health service delivery, and total performance indicators. There is also a significant positive correlation between CPR and leadership and governance, health financing, health human resource, access to medicine and technology, health service delivery and total performance indicators. However, it is interesting to note that the data on fully immunized children showed significant but negative correlations with leadership and governance performance indicators.Item Analysis of the consumption pattern of microcredit borrower and non-borrower households from three urban coastal barangays in Culasi, AntiqueAmmen, Neil D. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-03)This paper analyzed the consumption pattern of microcredit borrower households from the three urban coastal barangays in Culasi, Antique, and compared that with the non-borrowers. A total of 140 households were surveyed of which 46, 50, and 44 came from barangay Centro Norte, Centro Población, and Centro Sur, respectively. Out of the total households surveyed, 40% were ‘identified borrowers and the remaining 60% were non-borrowers. In addition, while only 33% were identified as fishers, the bigger percentage belonged to the non-fisher households. Consequently, these groups were further categorized into (1) fisher-borrower, (2) non-fisher-borrower, (3) fisher-non-borrower, and (4) non-fisher-non-borrower and a comparison of the differences in their consumption patterns was executed. Survey results showed that the top three household expenditures of the three urban coastal barangays were food, debt repayment, and education. This study also investigated the impact of per capita monthly expenditure and other household characteristics on the budget share of 20 commodities (food and nonfood) consumed by borrower and non-borrower households and found that income elasticities of the said commodities significantly vary among household categories. Results from the estimation and correlation on the quadratic model suggested that borrowers of microcredit programs are better off in terms of consumption than non-borrowers.Item Ang babaye, banwa kag batiano: Women's concerns and issues on flooding and their involvement in the disaster risk reduction management plan of Oton, IloiloRedison, Frances Anthea R. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)The study documents selected women’s concerns and issues on flooding on the three selected flood-prone barangays of Oton, Iloilo and their awareness of, and involvement in, the planning and implementation of the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan. There were a total of sixty (60) women respondents who are officially registered voters of the three barangays drawn randomly from the local list of voters of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Master List of Voters. Key informant interviews were used to gather additional information about women’s insights and experiences of flooding, twenty (20) each barangay. Based on the study’s survey, the majority of the women tend not to participate in community affairs because family is still the priority and civic responsibility is seen as optional if not necessary thus reflects or contributes to their limited awareness of the DRRM Plan of Oton. The findings support the need for gender synthesizing before mainstreaming, and recommends the re-organization of women’s groups and promotion of a community-based DRRM which involves inter-barangay alliance - to give women an avenue to challenge and change their gendered status in society.Item Antibacterial activity of Aqueous and Methanol extracts of selected Basidiomycetes from UPV, Miagao, Iloilo, PhilippinesAmbubuyog, Marja Victoria U. (Division of Biological Science, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines, 2013-03)The Basidiomycetes represent an enormous source for natural products with diverse chemical structures and wide-ranging antimicrobial activity. This study was done to investigate the antibacterial property of selected species of basidiomycetes aqueous and methanolic extracts against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Specifically, it aimed to (1) determine the antibacterial activity of the aqueous extract of selected species of basidiomycetes in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on the zone of inhibition; (2) determine the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extract of selected species of basidiomycetes in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on the zone of inhibition; and (3) compare the aqueous and methanolic extracts of selected species of basidiomycetes in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa based on the zone of inhibition. A total number of ten species were collected namely Auricularia sp., Schizophyllum sp., Trametes pubescens, Trametes versicolor, Trametes elegans, Ganoderma sp.(l), Ganoderma sp.(2), Stereum sp. and two unknowns. Dried samples were crushed and extracted with water and methanol. Antibacterial activity was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The results showed a negative to weak inhibition against the test microorganisms which is inconsistent with the results of previous studies. It could possibly be attributed to the preparation of the samples and the fruiting body maturity that influenced the antibacterial potential of the samples. It appears that fruiting bodies used in the present study may not be reliable sources of bioactive compounds for antibacterial activity.Item Antibiotic resistance patterns of selected pathogenic bacteria isolated from water and bottom sediments in the Iloilo tidal inlet (Iloilo River)Agustin, Eda Mae S.; Cabrias, Ligaya April May S.; Fuentebella, Elaine Joyce V.; Gestuveo, Rommel J.; Lagon, Raymond Anthonn Kriztee J.; Saldajeno, Cypruz Anne L.; Tunguia, Saer Martin J.; Villanueva, Regene Patricia Natividad V. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-03)In recent years, antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria has become a public health concern. Although little is known of its environmental implications the presence of both potentially pathogenic bacteria and fecal coliform in rivers and other bodies of water raises the question of whether resistance transfer may actually occur in bodies of water. In relation, the Iloilo River for one has experienced changes in both ecological and sanitary conditions. With this threatening problem of both ecological and fecal pollution, the river could harbor microflora that could be of public health concern. Using the Kirby-Bauer Method, this study generally aims to determine the antibiotic resistance of pathogenic bacteria isolates (E. coli, S. typhi and V. cholerae) from water and bottom sediment samples from selected sampling areas in Iloilo River, Iloilo City. Stock cultures of bacterial isolates were obtained from the UPV-National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (UPV-NIMBB) and were subjected to antibiotic resistance analysis using 12 different antibiotic classes. Results showed varying degrees of resistance in all of the sampling sites and species. Most isolates were highly resistant to penicillin and oxacillin and least resistant to ciprofloxacin. Multidrug-resistant isolates were also observed in all of the sampling sites and species. More isolates from bottom sediments were observed to be highly resistant than the isolates from water samples. Pearson correlation revealed that the antibiotic resistance patterns among the different species isolated from the different sources and sampling sites appeared to vary in a systematic manner indicative of a similar mechanism of antibiotic resistance development.Item As the rivers flows: A history of laws and politics affecting the Iloilo River from the 1970's to the presentBaliao, Martin Earl D. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2013-04)This paper attempts to examine the history of national and local river laws and policies that pertain to changes in the ecology of the Iloilo River since the 1970s. Furthermore, this paper seeks to investigate the reasons for the laws and policies and the actions taken by different administrations across the decades that affected the ecology of the river. Library research and one interview was used to gather the necessary data for this research paper. This paper will conclude by discussing the effects of the different laws, policies, and plans on the ecology of the Iloilo River.Item Ascariasis and protein energy malnutrition among schoolchildren of Monteclaro Elementary School, Miag-ao, IloiloBerlin, Nellisa Marie; Chua, Enrique III; Daquilenea, Miko; Dorde, Cristy Joy; Hosillos, Juls; Libo-on, Dyann Dolour; Panizales, Katherine Royce; Robleza, Xela Patricia; Sanchez, Maria Lourdes; Sumayo, Marilyn (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2008-04)Ascaris infections lead to malnutrition and poor cognitive development especially to children aged 5-15 years of age. In the Philippines, protein-energy malnutrition is one of the ten leading causes of child mortality. From January to February 2008, a cross- sectional descriptive study was carried out in Monteclaro Elementary School to describe the prevalence of ascariasis and the prevalence of protein energy malnutrition and relate it to the demographic factors such as age group, educational attainment of the mother, annual family income, availability of toilet, and proper hand washing practice. Sixty eight pupils of the said school were included in the study with ages ranging from 6-13 years. Fecal sample of the participants were collected, processed using the Kato-Katz smear technique, and microscopically examined to determine the prevalence of infections. The weight was measured for weight for age index. A self administered questionnaire was given to know about socio-economic factors. Handwashing activities were utilized as a basis for personal hygiene. The result of the study shows that 12% of the study population has a mild A. lumbricoides infection. Weight for age measurement shows that 21% of the pupils are underweight. Pupils of the age group 12-14 were of the highest frequency of ascaris infection and pupils of the age group of 6-8 were of the lowest frequency. Twelve percent of pupils who have toilets in their household are positive for ascaris infection. All pupils failed in the handwashing activity. Twenty seven percent of the pupils whose mothers have no formal education were underweight. This is due to the level of education that the mother has achieved. Mothers who have undergone tertiary education know more about the proper ways to nourish their children thereby minimizing children who are underweight. Twenty-three percent of the pupils included in the study were below normal in the weight for age index. Trend shows that those families with lower income have a higher frequency of respondents that are underweight. For pupils with below normal weight for age 50% are without toilet while 19% with toilet. There is low prevalence of ascariasis in Monteclaro Elementary School. The results of this study do not truly show the relationship of ascariasis with protein energy malnutrition. Inconsistencies of the results with the findings of other studies are possibly due to low number of positive ascaris-infected participants and the low number of overall participants. Increase in the sample size and ascariasis positive participants within the sample are recommended to get more accurate results.Item Assessment of the performance of school-based multi-purpose teen centers in the first district of Iloilo ProvinceAlba, Nina Charlyn B.; Anasario, Jc Belle T.; Bautista, Seth Exequiel E.; Caliso, Femmy Rose E.; Catalan, Gabrielle A.; Espanol, Yzabel H.; Gonzaga, Royce Clea Maristel A.; Ilogon, Kent Paolo A.; Leoncio, Mabelle K.; Toledo, Mike T.; Vicencio, Geeza Gem S. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2017-06)Teenage pregnancy, HIV and AIDS, and mental health problems are increasingly alarming among adolescents in the Philippines. Thus, Adolescent Heath Development Programs (AHDP) were initiated in the country along with this is the institution of teen centers for the personality enrichment and skills improvement among teens focused chiefly on sexuality and health. Aside from the criterion used for the MODEL ILOILO TEENiran by the Iloilo PPO, no other guidelines exist to evaluate a teen center in the Philippines. This study aimed to evaluate the functionality of the teen centers present in the first district of Iloilo. A descriptive study design was used with study locales at schools within the first district wherein the teen centers are located and is within the inclusion criteria. Evaluation was done by the researchers’ using pre-tested evaluation tool and through a survey given to randomly selected teens. Frequency and proportion, Principal Component Analysis, and Hierarchical Clustering Methods were used for statistical analysis. The Teen Centers had an overall rating of above average with a mean score of 4.10±0.31. Tills also reflects that the four different components of the teen centers are also above average. Three clusters based from the views of the respondents were identified namely Enthusiastic consisting of 50.5% of the respondents, Gregarious having 31.9% and Apathetic comprising 17.5% of the teens surveyed. From the respondents, 60.5% were satisfied while 39.5% were not satisfied. As a conclusion, the teen centers have been effective in implementing its goals and objectives based on the evaluation of the researchers’ and feedbacks of the teen clients. Despite these outstanding results, it is still recommended that the teen centers further improve their overall performance to fully reach the goals of a teen center and to give the teens the utmost experience and learnings of the programs.Item Biosorption of Copper (CU) and Lead (PB) by heavy metal-resistant bacterial isolates from Iloilo RiverAmpuan, Naira Mitz W. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences,University of the Philippines Visayas, 2012-04)Many indigenous organisms isolated from sites contaminated with heavy metals have tolerance to heavy metal toxicity and these microbial activities have always been the natural starting point for all biotechnological applications. It is therefore necessary to isolate bacterial strains with novel metabolic capabilities. In this study, a total number of 18 heavy metal-resistant bacteria (10 Pb-resistant and 8 Cu-resistant) were isolated from Iloilo River sediment samples (10° 41.974’N, 122°34.187’ E). Biosorption of Cu and Pb by the bacterial isolates was characterized to evaluate their applicability for heavy metal removal from industrial waters. Selecting the highest resistance to metal toxicity’ and biosorption, 4 isolates were identified by phenotypic characterization. Identification of the top four metal-resistant isolates designates: Vibrio charchariae (83%) for Cu4; Vibrio harveyi (79%) for Cu6; Moraxella equi (100%) for Pb8; and Phoecoenobacter uteri (92%) for Pb9. Evaluation of specific metal biosorption by the isolates after incubation for 48 h suggested that none of the isolates have good potential for bioremoval of metals from contaminated environments.Item Characterization and identification of previously isolated bacteria from water and sediment samples along Forbes Bridge and Sooc Bridge in Iloilo RiverAbangan, Cassey S. (Division of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2011-04)This study identified and characterized eighteen previously collected bacteria from water and bottom sediment samples in Forbes Bridge and Sooc Bridge along Iloilo River. Conventional method of bacterial characterization was used in this study. Morphological, physiological and biochemical tests were employed to all bacterial isolates. Identification to genus level was based on The Prokaryotes and Bergey’s Manual of Systematic Bacteriology. Four genera were identified: Staphylococcus spp. was the most abundant (50%), followed by Bacillus spp. (22.22%), Acinetobacter spp. (16.67%), and Cellulomonas spp. (11.11%). Staphylococcus spp. and Bacillus spp. were found in both sampling sites, while Acinetobacter spp. was found only in Forbes Bridge area and Cellulomonas spp. was present only in Sooc Bridge area. Three genera were identified in samples from Forbes Bridge: Staphylococcus spp. (45.5%) followed by Acinetobacter spp. and Bacillus spp.of equal distribution of 27.35%. Three genera were also identified and characterized from water and sediment samples from Sooc Bridge: genus Staphylococcus (37.14%), followed by Cellulomonas (28.67%) and lastly, Bacillus spp. (14.29%). The result of the study revealed that the two sampling sites were contaminated with bacteria. Bacterial contamination predominantly came from animal and human waste from residential units, establishments and hospitals brought to the river water directly or through runoffs.Item Children's rights and welfare: Case study on the effects of the 1988 family code to illegitimate children in IloiloBagsit, Liza Flor T.; Huesca, Andrea Fideliz T. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2003-03)This research paper looks into how the rights of illegitimate children has been changed with the passage of the 1988 Family Code. Using 6 case studies, this research examines how the Code affected the assertion of these children's rights by themselves or by their parent/guardian. It further looks into the avenues that can restrict or facilitate the exercise of these rights. The 1988 Family Code has effected changes with regard to illegitimate children. It eliminated the classification of illegitimate children and it brought improvement on the law of succession wherein the illegitimate child gets 1/2 of the share of the legitimate child. Despite these gains, the Family Code brought about discrimination against illegitimate children in the sense that they cannot use their fathers' surnames unless acknowledged. Moreover, as illegitimate children, they get an unequal share in the inheritance from their fathers. In the eyes of the law there is still inequality between legitimate and illegitimate children. Illegitimate children are less protected by the law than their counterparts. The 1988 Family Code is an improvement with regard to the promotion of the rights of illegitimate children, but if we are to advocate equal rights between illegitimate and legitimate children, there is still a need to change the provisions of the said law. There are also several factors which serve as obstacles to their assertion of rights. These are: concern with “shame”; time consuming to file cases in court; financial constraints; and, lack of incentive in establishing filiation when the father is penniless.Item Client's assessment of the quality of care of family planning services in the rural health unit of Pavia, IloiloBasas, Orchid Joy B.; Golez, Sheila Mae G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2002-03)Family Planning Studies in the Philippines had grown into enormous number. They are mostly centered on the acceptance of the various contraceptive methods by the couple and do not usually focus on the quality of care of family planning services. This study was conducted primarily in order to determine the clients’ assessment of the three aspects of Quality of Care of Family Planning Services (choice of methods, information given to clients and mechanisms for continuity of use) provided by the Rural Health Unit in Pavia, Iloilo. The respondents were thirty-five (35) married women of reproductive age (15-49). The data were analyzed using simple frequency counts and percentages. The result of the study revealed that IUD and pills are the most offered contraceptive methods in the clinic. Other methods that are being offered include condoms, injectables, rhythm, withdrawal, ligation and vasectomy. Most of the respondents preferred IUD and pills as their method. It also revealed that the respondents were informed about the side effects and effectiveness of their chosen method. Most of them also were able to discuss what they know about their chosen method. With regards to information service, most of the respondents were informed by the health worker regarding their chosen method. The study also revealed that the mechanisms used by the health worker to ensure continuity of use is through verbal means and by pressuring the respondents to go back in the clinic. By average, the clients’ assessment of the quality of care of family planning services is very good which means that they are satisfied with the services they get from the clinic.
