    Gender differences in desired quality of mates among young employed adults in Iloilo City

    This study measured the relationship between the variables as mentioned, gender and desired qualities in mates. It also identified the desired characteristics deemed important by males and females in their potential mate as supported by the evolutionary theory. Two hundred young employed single individuals working in various establishments in Iloilo City completed a 12 item questionnaire which allowed them to rank the characteristics in order of preference. Descriptive analysis showed that there are gender differences in the choice of desired characteristics and is indeed supported by the evolutionary theory on mate selection. Cultural and social aspects were proven to be influencing factors in determining some of the top three characteristics. To determine if the genders differed in the ranks they gave to each trait, the Mann-Whitney test was used.

    Group study vs. individual study: A comparison of effective study technique

    This study was an attempt to find out which of the two study techniques is effective: group study or individual study. It also sought to know which of the two academic groups performed better in a group study or in an individual study. The respondents were 60 students from the Biological and Social Sciences Divisions. Subjects were selected using the simple random sampling. The design was a 2 (Group study and Individual study) x 2 (Biological Sciences and Social Sciences) factorial design and this tested three hypotheses; (1) To find out if students perform better when they study in groups than when they study alone; (2) To find out if Biology students perform better than Social Science students; (3) To know if Biology students perform better than Social Science students when they study in groups than when they study alone The researchers used the 2x2 Analysis of Variance in the analysis of the data. The results were obtained by using the ANOVA and F test was used to test the hypotheses. The results revealed that (1) students who studied in groups performed better than those who studied individually, (2) Biology students performed better than Social Science students and (3) there was an interaction between study techniques and the academic groups.

    The relationship between Mathematics anxiety and test performance in Mathematics of secondary school students

    The math anxiety and math test performance of 192 secondary school students from Palaca-Damilisan National High School were assessed using a math anxiety questionnaire and a math test. This was done to find out the effects of math anxiety on high school students’ math test performance. Sex and year level differences on math anxiety and math test performance were also investigated using the analysis of variance. Findings reveal that math anxiety affects math test performance negatively. No statistically significant sex differences were found in both math anxiety and math test performance. No statistically significant year level differences were found in math anxiety. Year-level differences were found to be statistically significant in math test performance. Year level math test performance means showed a decreasing pattern from first year to third year but the means went up in the third year. Tukeys HSD showed that significant differences were coming from the differences in the means of the first and second year levels and the first and third year levels.

    Verbal exhortation and modeling: Their effects on the degree on conformity

    The research experiment was aimed to determine whether verbal exhortation and modeling had an effect on conformity in implementing rules and regulations. The sample of the research experiment involved fourth year students from Oton National High School. Eighty participants (n=80), 40 males and 40 females, were selected and assigned to the four experimental conditions and received appropriate experimental treatment. Conformity was measured by the number of students who took off their shoes before entering the library. After the analysis of the data, this experimental study revealed that there was a significant relationship between the variables of modeling and verbal exhortation, x2= 4.55 (df=l), p < .05 . Regardless of the presence or absence of a model, conformity was higher among participants who were subjected to verbal exhortation than those who did not receive verbal exhortation

    Personal meanings, experiences, and coping strategies for poverty of women 4P's beneficiaries

    This is a phenomenological study which sought to describe the experiences of poverty of women Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries, their personal understanding of poverty, how their membership in 4Ps has affected their experiences of poverty, and their strategies for coping with difficulties associated with poverty. The participants of this study were four women 4Ps beneficiaries residing in Bay-bay Sur, Miagao, Iloilo. An interview guide questionnaire was constructed to gather narratives of poverty experiences from the participants. The results showed that personal meanings of poverty and the experiences of poverty among the participants are generally similar. All of the participants reported that 4Ps lessened their poverty experience in a relative sense. They all believed that daily struggles of inadequacy of basic needs could be fought by hard work. Lastly, all the participants believed that education is the key to their economic mobility and better way of life.

    Road widening: The story of role, place attachment, appraisal, coping, and stress

    This study wanted to determine if social roles, place attachment, appraisal and coping influence the level of stress of those affected by the road widening program using the Transactional Theory of Stress. Respondents (n= 123) were administered various composite measures and key informants were interviewed. Results indicate that those with affirmative place attachment had greater stress levels, as well as when the situation is appraised as threatening. The study lend partial support to predictions of the framework used. Recommendation of the study points to greater efforts from the government in conducting major social impact assessment (SIA) regarding the construction of road projects and providing assistive programs, not only limited to financial compensation but also attends to peoples' wellbeing and lifestyles.

    The relationship of temperament, mindfulness attention and self-regulating behavior of on-line computer gamers in Iloilo City

    The study had 42 respondents, all of whom are online computer gamers aged 15 to 27 who play at least 20 hours a week. Three tests were administered among the participants, namely the Keirsey Temperament Sorter (KTS), the Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SRQ), and Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS), to find out their Temperament type, their level of Self-Regulating behavior and their level of Mindfulness Attention. Results of the scores from the KTS show that online computer gamers are mostly Artisan type or can be classified as such (64.2%). A majority of low scores among the respondents in the SRQ show the respondents having low self-regulating behavior (54.8%). And the average mean scores (3.53) in the MAAS show that gamers have an average level of mindfulness attention. The correlation between Self-Regulation and Mindfulness Attention is 0.053; The correlation between Mindfulness Attention and Temperament is 0.076; And the correlation between Temperament and Mindfulness Attention is -0.168. The results show that all the variables are weakly correlated with each other.
