Item Perceptions of poverty and life aspirations of children from low-income familiesBordon, Aika Mae G. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2015-06)This study examined the perceptions of poverty of children from low-income families, their life aspirations and their beliefs of attaining these, and the relationship between these variables. Structured interviews and surveys were conducted among 40 children from low-income families, aged 11-14 years old, from four barangays in Miagao, Iloilo. The findings show that children’s perceptions of poverty are generally based on their experiences of destitution. Respondents have attributed poverty to individualistic and structural factors. Children have valued economic gains, family, and community in their aspirations. Respondents have also placed greater value on intrinsic aspirations. Moreover, they believed that education, employment, positive attitude and reliance on God are pre-requisites in the attainment of aspirations. Children also believed that they are more likely to achieve intrinsic goals than extrinsic ones. Regression analysis revealed that structural causes of poverty predicted their life aspirations. Familial consequences of poverty, together with perceived structural causes, predicted children’s beliefs of attaining their life aspirations.Item Income an employment structure of households in the coastal barangays of Miagao, IloiloBacalocos, Kezzie Lyn R.; Camit, Rizalee L. (Division of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines Visayas, 2010-04)This paper was designed to describe the income and employment structure of the households in the coastal barangays of Miagao, Iloilo. Data were gathered through face- to-face interviews with 303 household heads from the six barangays identified by the Municipal Planning and Development Office. There were a total of 1,867 household members, where 1,086 belonged to the working age group. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, averages and percentages. Results showed that despite being near the sea, the households were not dependent on it for their income and employment. The proportion of professionals was low. Most household members in working age worked in the past in non — professional jobs, mostly in contractual terms. Similarly, most were currently employed in skill-related jobs such as in construction and mechanics. The proportion of females out of work is greater than the males. The monthly household income ranged between 0 to Phpl6, 300. The majority of households have an average income of P7, 343.19. Income diversification program is needed in the area. The women who are willing to work can be targeted for livelihood program and skills training. Information on jobs and skills training available must effectively disseminated in the barangays.Item Unemployed college graduates' perception of the existing unemployment condition in the countryArroz, Mizpah B.; Duarte, Iris Faye M. Work experiences, high educational attainment and personal connections were the reasons of respondents that they will be employed in the future. However, steep competition and rigid requirements set by agencies and companies turned out to be the reasons for unemployment. It further reveals that working abroad is the best resort for employment. Majority has plans of finding job outside the country for it offers higher salary and more job opportunities than in the country.
